The emojis proposed for 2025 are no longer just candidates: Unicode approved Emoji 17.0 on September 9, 2025. Seven new standalone emoji concepts made the final release, alongside new sequences and variants. One notable draft, Apple Core, was removed. Whether you can see the approved emojis now depends on your device, operating system, app, and fonts.
Which proposed emojis were approved?
The 2024 preview listed nine headline candidates. Eight of those concepts appear in the final release, including Ballet Dancer as a sequence rather than a new standalone character. Apple Core did not make the cut.

The table gives plain-English examples, not fixed meanings. People may use an emoji differently depending on context, and the same symbol can be playful, literal, or ironic.

What else is included besides the seven new symbols?
The headline figure of seven counts the new standalone emoji code points. Emoji 17.0 also adds sequences, including the gender-neutral Ballet Dancer, skin-tone sequences for People With Bunny Ears, and skin-tone sequences for People Wrestling.
A sequence combines multiple Unicode characters but can display as one emoji when the software supports it. Counts therefore depend on what is being counted: standalone characters, sequences, or individual gender and skin-tone variants. Emojipedia counts 163 new emojis in Emoji 17.0 when those entries and variants are included. The recommended repertoire reaches 3,953 when variations are counted. Those figures describe different counting units, not competing totals. Unicode explains emoji characters and sequences in its Technical Standard #51.

Why older previews show Apple Core
Apple Core appeared in early draft materials and Unicode’s July 2025 preview, which is why it may still appear in older articles or candidate lists. It was removed before final approval and is not an Emoji 17.0 character. The final-release account from Emojipedia explains the change.

When will the emojis appear on your phone?
Unicode approval is not the same as a phone or app update. Unicode defines the characters and sequences; vendors such as Apple, Google, Samsung, and Microsoft create their own artwork and decide when to add support to their operating systems, fonts, keyboards, and apps. Emoji 17.0 support is expected to appear across platforms during 2026, but timing varies by vendor and product. There is no single date when every user will receive the full set.

Even after an operating system supports an emoji, a particular app, browser, or font may not. If you see an empty box, tofu glyph, or missing-character symbol, that usually means the software rendering the text lacks support; it does not by itself mean the Unicode character is invalid. A recipient whose device supports the emoji may see it correctly even when it appears missing on yours.

Unicode standardizes the encoded emoji, not a single universal illustration. Its sample artwork is a reference, not a promise of how an emoji will look on an iPhone, Android phone, Windows PC, or social platform. Vendors draw their own versions, so details and expression can differ. A preview should identify its source—for example, Google Noto Color Emoji—rather than presenting one vendor’s design as the appearance everywhere.

How a candidate becomes an emoji
A proposal is evaluated by Unicode’s Emoji Subcommittee, then considered for final approval by the Unicode Technical Committee. After Unicode publishes the approved standard and data, vendors implement the characters and sequences in their products. A proposal is not a guarantee, and an approved emoji is not instantly available on every device. The distinction between candidate, approved entry, and platform support is especially important when looking at older previews of the 2025 list.
