Spoilers for The Boys Season 4, Episode 7. “The Insider” gives the season a late jolt by bringing Homelander’s hunt, the exposed moles, Ryan’s televised turn and Frenchie’s return to the virus plot into the same finale-facing hour. That convergence creates urgency, though the episode also risks crowding character stories that have little time left to breathe.

The hour pulls several live threads toward the finish. Homelander sends Deep and Black Noir after the Boys, fires Sister Sage, and the identities of several moles come to light. Ryan’s televised moment gives Billy Butcher a reason to feel proud of him, while Frenchie rejoins the group and returns to work on the anti-Supe virus. TV Guide’s episode listing summarizes these developments.
Does the episode bring the season back to life?
As a penultimate chapter, “The Insider” works best as a convergence point rather than a tidy resolution. Homelander’s orders turn the threat against the Boys into something immediate. The exposed moles sharpen the season’s questions about loyalty and infiltration, while Frenchie’s return gives the team a concrete, if unfinished, option against Supes. Together, these developments make the next episode feel consequential.

- The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under Homelander's muscly thumb as he consolidates his power. Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca's son, and his job as The Boys' leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they must find a way to work together and save the world before it's too late.
Ryan’s appearance supplies a more personal counterweight to the political and operational stakes. Butcher’s pride complicates their relationship at a moment when the season’s wider conflicts threaten to overwhelm its character drama. That emotional beat matters because the season has positioned Butcher as isolated from both his leadership role and Becca’s son.
The season’s larger setup is explicitly precarious: Amazon describes Victoria Neuman as closer to the Oval Office and Butcher as facing only months to live, with a divided team needing to work together. The finale synopsis then points toward the plan to put Homelander in charge of the United States and the Boys’ effort to stop him, alongside Frenchie’s attempt to recreate the virus. Those details make Episode 7’s focus on pursuit, infiltration, Ryan and the virus more than a collection of unrelated cliffhangers; each feeds into the final conflict.

Where the episode feels rushed
The same convergence that gives the episode momentum can make it feel overfilled. It must move multiple arcs into position for the finale while still giving them emotional weight. Some plot threads gain urgency more clearly than they gain resolution, and not every character story gets equal room in a 64-minute episode.
That tension appears in the critical response. Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 86% Tomatometer from seven critic reviews when accessed on October 8, 2026; the score is a small, changeable sample, not a measure of the episode’s quality. The excerpts collected there reflect both sides of the episode’s reception:

Rank #3
- Melody McCune of Tell-Tale TV said it “Sets the stage for an explosive season finale.”
- Nate Richard of Collider called it “a definite step up from last week” but said it “ultimately feels rushed despite a great cliffhanger.”
- Adrian Ruiz of But Why Tho? saw it as an example of the season “trying to do too much within its eight-episode season.”
- Ben Rosenstock of New York Magazine/Vulture praised the way most character arcs were coming together.
These short excerpts do not settle whether the episode’s pace works; they frame the real trade-off. The chapter is effective at making the finale feel close, but a sense of forward motion is not the same as fully developing every arc it gathers.
Verdict: a stronger launchpad than a resolution
“The Insider” earns its place as a penultimate episode by tightening the threat around the Boys and aligning personal and practical stakes with the finale’s central conflict. The moles, Homelander’s orders and the virus plot all create forward pull, while Ryan gives Butcher’s story a needed emotional note. The cost is some crowding: the episode sets up more than it can resolve. It brings the season back into motion, even if it cannot make every thread feel fully earned before the finale.
