In a 2019 excerpt from The Extraordinary Life and Death of Sunanda Pushkar, Mehta recounts how Vijay Kalra heard that Pushkar had been injured in a collision; the excerpt later says he came to suspect the account masked cosmetic surgery after encountering an online allegation. That is Kalra’s interpretation as presented in the book, not proof that the accident was fabricated.
What the 2019 excerpt says happened in Mumbai

Mehta writes that Pushkar and Toronto-based chartered accountant Vijay Kalra met in Canada and began a relationship. Pushkar later left suddenly for India. Kalra heard that she had been hurt in Mumbai while travelling in an auto-rickshaw that collided with a truck carrying iron pipes. According to the excerpt, she was taken to hospital and underwent operations on her chest and face.
Those particulars are what Mehta’s account recounts. The sources cited here do not independently verify the collision, injuries, or operations through medical records or contemporaneous reporting.

Why Kalra later questioned the accident story
The excerpt says that years later, after Pushkar had become a public figure, Kalra encountered a 2010 blog post alleging that she had undergone cosmetic procedures in Mumbai around the same period. The passage reproduces claims from that post, including a statement attributed there to surgeon Ashok Gupta.
Mehta’s excerpt says Kalra connected the alleged procedures’ timing with the injuries he had heard about and concluded that the accident story had been invented to cover cosmetic surgery. The conclusion belongs to Kalra as represented in the excerpt. The online allegation is not independent confirmation of the procedures, and it does not establish that no collision took place.
What can—and cannot—be concluded
| Account | Basis in the cited material | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Collision and injuries | Mehta’s 2019 book excerpt recounts what Kalra heard and the treatment Pushkar reportedly received. | The excerpt tells this version; the cited sources do not independently corroborate the incident or medical details. |
| Cosmetic surgery explanation | The excerpt says Kalra later drew an inference from a 2010 online allegation. | It establishes Kalra’s reported conclusion, not that the allegation was true or that the accident was fabricated. |
Accordingly, the excerpt’s headline language about getting to the “truth” behind a “near-fatal” accident should be understood as framing, not a verified resolution. The evidence presented in the excerpt does not settle whether the Mumbai collision occurred.

Pan Macmillan India lists The Extraordinary Life and Death of Sunanda Pushkar as a 100-page ebook by Sunanda Mehta, published 25 July 2019, ISBN 9781529036954. The publisher describes Mehta as a journalist and Pushkar’s former schoolmate, and says the biography draws on personal archives, interviews, and investigation across continents. Its scope ranges from Pushkar’s early life and marriages to her time in Canada, business in Dubai, years with Shashi Tharoor, and death. These are the publisher’s descriptions of the book. See the publisher’s book page.
The Mumbai incident in the excerpt is separate from Pushkar’s death in New Delhi on 17 January 2014. In a report dated 10 October 2015, NDTV said a medical report submitted to Delhi Police identified poisoning as the cause of death. That historical report does not, by itself, determine responsibility or establish the investigation’s current legal status. Read NDTV’s 2015 report.
