The pictures did not confirm Holland’s role or identify the scene. NBCUniversal later confirmed that Holland plays Telemachus in Nolan’s film, which was scheduled for release on July 17, 2026.
What the March 2025 set photos showed
In a report published March 13, 2025, ComicBook.com described circulating images of Holland and Nolan with cast and crew aboard a boat. A separate photo showed Holland and Jon Bernthal in costume as they greeted people during a break in filming. ComicBook.com’s report said the images offered little context about the scene and did not identify most of the roles.

The boat setting was visible; what the characters were doing in the story was not. The photos alone cannot establish that the scene showed a particular voyage, conversation, or plot event.
What the photos did not confirm about Holland’s role
At the time of the March report, Holland’s character had not been confirmed there. The suggestion that the boat might be connected to Telemachus sailing in search of his father was speculation, not something the images proved.

NBCUniversal later identified Holland as Telemachus, Odysseus’s son. Its May 7, 2026 trailer announcement also named Anne Hathaway as Penelope and described the film as shot entirely with IMAX cameras. That later casting confirmation establishes Holland’s role in the movie, but it does not retroactively reveal the precise scene captured in the boat photos.
How the boat photos fit the story
Nolan’s film adapts Homer’s The Odyssey, an ancient Greek epic centered on Odysseus’s journey home after the Trojan War. Variety reported in February 2025 that Matt Damon would play Odysseus and described the story as the Greek hero’s journey home. The film’s official Universal Pictures Canada page lists Nolan as writer and director and gives the same release date as NBCUniversal’s announcement: July 17, 2026.

That story context makes a boat an unsurprising setting, but it is not evidence that the photographed boat scene depicts a specific episode from Homer’s poem. The images are best read as a glimpse of the production, not a plot reveal.

A July 13, 2026 Associated Press feature reported that production filmed across six countries and used a real ship, the Draken, a reconstructed Viking vessel modified to resemble a Mycenaean-era ship. The AP also reported that the shoot lasted 91 days over six months. These details show the scale and practical locations of the production; they do not identify the boat in the earlier photos or prove what scene it represented.
The AP quoted Nolan calling the film “the ultimate adventure story.” Holland, identified in the report as playing Telemachus, described its balance of action and character intimacy: “The movie has so much scale,” he said. “There are times where it feels like you’re on this kind of action-adventure roller coaster, but he doesn’t sacrifice any of the heart and the intimacy between our characters.”
