The ending of The Book of Eli contrasts two ways of using the Bible: Carnegie wants it as a tool to control people, while Eli’s mission ends with it preserved in a library alongside other sacred texts. Solara’s final walk into the wasteland carries Eli’s influence forward. Screenwriter Gary Whitta said that scene was meant as an epilogue, not a setup for a sequel.
What happens at the end of The Book of Eli?
Eli completes his journey west, and the Bible reaches the library at Alcatraz. It is placed beside the Quran and other sacred texts. Carnegie, who sought the Bible because he believed it could help him control people, does not get to use it for that purpose. The story’s destination is preservation rather than political possession. A contemporary account of the film describes Carnegie’s motive and the book’s arrival at the library.

Solara chooses to leave the settlement and walk back into the wasteland. She takes Eli’s gear, but the scene suggests more than an inheritance of objects: she has been changed by the journey and now has a purpose of her own.
What does the ending mean?
Control versus preservation
The clearest thematic contrast is between Carnegie’s ambition and the Bible’s final home. Carnegie treats the book as a way to gain power over a desperate population; at Alcatraz, it becomes part of a shared collection of sacred texts. The ending supports a reading about the difference between weaponizing a text and preserving it. It does not, by itself, settle what the film says about every religion or sacred text.

Solara carries Eli’s influence forward
Whitta said Solara’s last scene was intended as an epilogue, not a sequel hook. In his account, she takes Eli’s equipment and returns with the maturity and sense of purpose she gained from him. He described her as having some of Eli’s “magic,” while also allowing that viewers may read the image differently. Whitta’s comments on the ending make creator intent clear without closing off audience interpretation.
The film leaves Solara’s future—and the fate of her mother—unresolved. Her walk back is therefore best understood as a continuation of her own story, not a promise that a particular next chapter will occur.

What did the filmmakers say about religion?
In a 2010 interview, director Albert Hughes said the filmmakers removed or softened material that might feel preachy. He explained, “We tried to tone that down and make it about the mission, and the faith in that mission, as opposed to coming off righteous.” Hughes’s interview frames the film around a character’s conviction and the journey, rather than an attempt to lecture viewers.
Hughes also said the filmmakers did not want audiences simply to label it “a religious movie,” comparing its mythology to that of other fictional worlds. The film is plainly religiously themed, but the creators’ comments leave room for viewers to disagree about its theology. Hughes put the aim this way: “The movie is not about that. So you want people to enjoy it, no matter what.” These are comments from 2010, not a new statement about the film.

Does the ending explain Eli’s blindness or survival?
The ending invites a supernatural reading of Eli’s journey, but the creator comments cited here do not provide a definitive explanation of the mechanics of his blindness or survival. The story presents those events; claims about exactly how they work, or what they prove theologically, go beyond what the cited interviews establish. Whitta’s own remark that Solara has some of Eli’s “magic” is his interpretation of her final image, not a full explanation of the film’s supernatural elements.
