Filmmaker Charles Perry’s documentary The Black Cowboy had its world premiere at Swarthmore College on October 2, 2026, as part of the 2026 Cooper Series. The screening opened a wider program, “Black Western Culture through Music, Film, and Art,” bringing documentary film into conversation with Black Western history, visual art, live music, and a classic all-Black-cast Western.
When and where was the premiere?
The screening took place Friday, October 2, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. in Pearson-Hall Theatre at Swarthmore College’s Lang Performing Arts Center. The event was listed as free and open to the public. MyChesCo’s September 2026 event report provided the advance schedule; The Phoenix’s October 8 report subsequently described the screening as having taken place “this past Friday.”
What is Perry’s documentary about?
According to The Phoenix’s review, the film runs just over an hour and was ten years in the making. It moves between historical commentary and contemporary footage in the American South, considering Black cowboy identity and the ways Hollywood has shaped popular ideas of the cowboy. It also includes reenactments of historical figures, including deputy marshal Bass Reeves.
The documentary asks, “what exactly is a cowboy, really?” That question gives the film a way to look beyond familiar screen imagery and examine who has been part of Western history and culture. The Phoenix reviewer found the film’s pacing uneven and its technical polish limited; those are the reviewer’s judgments, not a consensus assessment. The same review says the documentary is worth watching once it becomes available to the public.

Who took part in the discussion?
The post-screening discussion included Perry, historian and author Art T. Burton, and Vassar College professor Mia Mask. The advance event report also listed photographer Ivan McClellan and El-dog Ferrell as participants, with photographer and Swarthmore professor Ron Tarver moderating. The Phoenix’s shorter account names Perry, Burton, and Mask.
How did the screening fit the Cooper Series?
The 2026 Cooper Series placed the premiere within “Black Western Culture through Music, Film, and Art,” a program linking cinema with visual art and live performance. The associated events included a visual art exhibition and a following-evening screening of The Bronze Buckaroo, the 1939 all-Black-cast Western, presented with a live soundtrack and performance by Dom Flemons.

The two film events offered different ways into the subject: Perry’s contemporary documentary examined Black cowboy history and culture, while The Bronze Buckaroo brought an earlier Western feature to the program in a live music setting. They were distinct parts of a broader cultural program, rather than comparable versions of the same kind of film.
Further reading on Black cowboys
For a related visual-history perspective, Swarthmore professor and photographer Ron Tarver’s book The Long Ride Home: Black Cowboys in America was published in September 2024. Swarthmore College Magazine reports that it contains 110 photographs and an essay by Art T. Burton. Tarver told the magazine, “We all built this country,” adding that reminding people Black Americans have long been part of this culture is important. The book is further reading about Black cowboy history, not a companion volume to Perry’s documentary.

No confirmed public release, distributor, streaming service, or physical edition is identified in the available coverage. The Phoenix reviewer’s hope that the film will be worth watching “once released to the public” is not a release announcement. The premiere establishes that the film was shown at Swarthmore; it does not establish where or when it can next be seen.
