Newhart connected the two shows as Arthur Jeffries—better known as Professor Proton—appearing on the original series and later returning through voiceover on its prequel.
Newhart’s Professor Proton linked the two series
On The Big Bang Theory, Newhart played Arthur Jeffries, a once-famous children’s science-show host whom Sheldon admired. The Television Academy’s 2022 interview with Newhart recounts six episodes in the role. In Young Sheldon, he continued as Professor Proton through voiceover; Variety reported that he appeared in three episodes of the prequel.

The format differed: Newhart appeared on camera in The Big Bang Theory, while his Young Sheldon role was heard in voiceover. The two series also shared cast members: Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik reprised their Big Bang Theory roles in the Young Sheldon finale, according to a 2024 Paramount/CBS release.

One accessible remembrance came from Chuck Lorre, creator of The Big Bang Theory. In a statement reproduced by Variety, Lorre wrote, “A master of the craft, and a kind and gentle man,” and added, “I got to work with a comedy legend.” Those are Lorre’s words, not a cast statement.
Why Newhart accepted the role
In the Television Academy interview, originally published in emmy magazine in 2022, Newhart said Lorre had approached him repeatedly before he agreed to join The Big Bang Theory. Asked why he accepted, Newhart replied: “No, I like the cast and the writing on The Big Bang Theory.”

Professor Proton introduced Newhart to a new generation of viewers, but the role was one chapter in a long comedy career. Variety noted that his album The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart became the first comedy album to top the Billboard charts. His appearances across the two sitcoms offered a memorable connection between their casts, while the tributes reflected the affection felt after his death in July 2024.
