For this retrospective, spring means March through May 2024. There is no single objective “best” list: these picks balance theatrical spectacle, family animation, adult drama and distinctive genre films, with audience and box-office response used as context rather than a quality ranking.
Which movies came out in spring 2024?
Spring release calendars use different boundaries. Box Office Mojo’s domestic Spring 2024 table covers March 1 through May 2; some contemporary previews also included May releases. This guide uses the reader-friendly March–May window and focuses on seven varied films. Release dates below are US dates as listed by the cited sources, except where a regional date is specifically identified.

The list is an editorial selection, not a universal ranking. Its choices span a major cinematic event, family viewing, franchise spectacle, an adult-leaning speculative thriller, relationship drama and action and crime stories. Domestic gross is one measure of audience reach, not a verdict on artistic quality.
Best spring 2024 movies by what you want to watch
Dune: Part Two — for large-scale theatrical spectacle
Denis Villeneuve’s science-fiction sequel is the event-film anchor here, and the clearest pick for viewers seeking expansive world-building and premium-format presentation. Box Office Mojo’s Spring 2024 domestic table lists a March 1 release and a domestic gross of $280,558,731 for the season it defines as March 1–May 2.

- New Movies Scooby-Doo, The (Almost) Complete Collection (Blu-Ray) They fell in love with the Scooby-Doo original, Where Are You? TV series were growing up and now I could enjoy more sophisticated Plots and characters, so came the hour-long movies The New Scooby-Doo, and what sets them apart Deliciously and hilariously apart is the marvelous lineup of Celebrity customers Stars The Harlem Globetrotters, Dick Van Dyke, The Three Stooges, Jonathan Winters, Don Knotts, \\\ "Mama \" " Cass Elliot, and Laurel and Hardy, plus the participation of other animated action heroes like Batman and Robin and speed with bugs. It's no mystery that you're in for a classic Good Time!
Those figures are distinct from the opening-weekend estimate. The Associated Press reported that Comscore estimated an $81.5 million US-and-Canada opening weekend in 2024. AP also reported that premium large-format screens accounted for 48% of opening-weekend business and that IMAX contributed $18.5 million. The report noted the film was shot using IMAX cameras. These are historical opening-period measures, not current performance figures or a quality score. Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian told AP, “It shows how important one movie can be to the overall health of the industry.”
Kung Fu Panda 4 — for family animation
For a family-oriented alternative to the season’s adult dramas and action thrillers, this animated sequel is a natural choice. Box Office Mojo lists its US release as March 8 and its Spring 2024 domestic gross as $185,945,995. That places it second in the table by gross, but popularity and artistic merit are different questions.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire — for monster-movie franchise spectacle
This is the pick for viewers who want familiar franchise scale and giant-monster action. Box Office Mojo lists a March 29 US release and a Spring 2024 domestic gross of $183,567,009. Like the other grosses in that table, the figure describes domestic box-office performance during its stated season, not a critical assessment.
Civil War — for a speculative, adult-leaning thriller
Alex Garland’s film offers a more unsettling counterpoint to the season’s franchise releases. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2024 anticipated-movies page listed Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Jesse Plemons and Nick Offerman in the cast, with an April 12 opening date. Box Office Mojo records a Spring 2024 domestic gross of $58,455,916.

Challengers — for relationship drama with a tennis setting
Luca Guadagnino’s film centers on a complicated relationship triangle in the world of tennis. The San Francisco Chronicle described Zendaya’s character as a player who coaches her husband against her former lover. Rotten Tomatoes listed Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist in the cast and April 26, 2024 as the opening date. The Chronicle’s date information was for the Bay Area, so its local calendar should not be read as a nationwide release schedule.
Monkey Man — for a Mumbai-set action thriller
Dev Patel directs and stars in this revenge story set in Mumbai. Rotten Tomatoes identified it as Patel’s feature directorial debut and listed an April 5, 2024 opening. Box Office Mojo lists a Spring 2024 domestic gross of $24,357,755. Its setting and filmmaker-led premise make it a distinct option for viewers looking beyond established franchise worlds.
Rank #4
Love Lies Bleeding — for crime, romance and a darker genre mix
This 1980s-set story brings together bodybuilding, danger and a violent family context, with Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian. The Chronicle corrected its Bay Area release date to March 15, while Box Office Mojo lists a March 8 domestic release. That difference is a useful reminder that a regional preview’s dates may not match a national listing.

- For spectacle: Start with Dune: Part Two for science-fiction scale or Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire for monster-franchise action.
- For family viewing: Kung Fu Panda 4 is the list’s animation pick.
- For adult drama and tension: Consider Civil War or Challengers, depending on whether you prefer speculative conflict or relationship-focused drama.
- For a different genre texture: Monkey Man offers a Mumbai-set revenge thriller; Love Lies Bleeding mixes crime and romance with a darker edge.
These are viewing-guide distinctions, not source-published ratings. Contemporary previews establish what was anticipated and provide cast, premise and scheduled-date information; the box-office table records domestic grosses; neither alone settles which film is best for a particular viewer.

A critical counterpoint: Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World
For readers interested in an art-house alternative, Metacritic’s March 2024 preview listed Radu Jude’s comedy Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World for March 22 and displayed a 95 Metascore labeled “Universal acclaim” on that dated preview page. That is a snapshot for one title, not a current score comparison or proof that it was the best film of the whole season.
Where to revisit the films
Home-entertainment releases can make a retrospective watch easier, but formats and dates vary by market. Warner Bros. Japan listed Dune: Part Two as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set, with a Japanese disc release date of July 3, 2024. That information applies to Japan; it should not be treated as a universal edition or availability claim.
