Spotify is the best music streaming service for most people because it combines excellent discovery, flexible playlists, social features, broad device support, and a mature cross-platform experience. It is not automatically the best choice for everyone, though. Apple Music is a stronger fit for Apple households, YouTube Music wins for remixes and hard-to-find recordings, Amazon Music Unlimited makes more sense for Prime and Alexa users, TIDAL is compelling for immersive hi-fi listening, and Qobuz is the specialist choice for hi-res streaming plus music purchases.
This is a fit-based guide rather than a claim that one catalog or app is universally superior. The title keeps its 2025 framing, while volatile feature notes and current plan examples were checked against the supplied service documentation on August 11, 2026. Prices, availability, audio formats, plan names, and features can change by country, device, account, and billing channel.
Quick comparison
| Service | Best for | What sets it apart | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spotify | Most listeners | Discovery, playlists, sharing, cross-platform support, and a broad listening ecosystem | Lossless playback is a current capability whose availability depends on account, device, settings, network, and content version |
| Apple Music | Apple users and classical listeners | Apple device integration, lossless audio, Spatial Audio, Apple Music Classical, and Apple One bundles | Its best value depends heavily on whether your household already uses Apple services |
| YouTube Music | YouTube users and obscure recordings | Official releases alongside videos, covers, remixes, live performances, DJ sets, and other YouTube material | Search results may mix official audio with video or user-uploaded versions |
| Amazon Music Unlimited | Prime households and Alexa users | More than 100 million songs, HD and spatial audio, Alexa integration, and an audiobook benefit for eligible subscribers | Prime Music is not the same thing as the separate Music Unlimited subscription |
| TIDAL | Hi-fi and immersive-audio listeners | Lossless, HiRes FLAC, Dolby Atmos, offline listening, and an optional DJ Extension | Album, format, hardware, and partner-integration availability varies |
| Qobuz | Hi-res streaming and music ownership | FLAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz, offline listening, and discounted hi-res downloads with Sublime | Maximum resolution is not the quality of every track and may not produce an audible improvement in every setup |
How to choose a music streaming service
The right choice usually becomes clear when you answer six questions:
- Where do you listen? If your household moves between phones, computers, game consoles, cars, smart TVs, and speakers, cross-platform support may matter more than a small difference in audio specifications.
- How do you find music? Spotify is the strongest default for algorithmic discovery and collaborative playlists. YouTube Music is better when finding a particular live version, cover, remix, or DJ set matters.
- Does your household already pay for an ecosystem? Apple One, Amazon Prime, or YouTube Premium can change the effective value of a subscription.
- Do you need hi-res or immersive audio? TIDAL, Qobuz, Apple Music, Amazon Music Unlimited, and Spotify’s current Premium documentation all have stronger audio-quality propositions than older comparisons may suggest. The maximum format is useful only if your device, connection, settings, and the specific release support it.
- Do you need more than music? Spotify may include eligible audiobook listening time, YouTube Premium removes ads from eligible YouTube videos, and Amazon Music Unlimited includes an audiobook benefit for eligible subscribers.
- Do you want to own downloads? Qobuz is the clearest choice if you want streaming access while also buying hi-res music at a discount through its Sublime tier.
Catalog counts should not decide the purchase by themselves. Services count catalogs differently, availability changes by territory, and a larger stated number does not guarantee that the albums, versions, metadata, or recordings you want are present in the form you prefer.

1. Spotify — best overall
Spotify remains the best all-round recommendation because its advantage is the whole listening ecosystem rather than one isolated specification. It is particularly strong at turning listening history into recommendations, organizing playlists, supporting collaborative listening, and keeping a library usable across different platforms and devices.
Premium currently includes ad-free listening, offline downloads, on-demand playback, high audio quality, and lossless listening according to Spotify’s current U.S. documentation. Eligible plans may also include audiobook listening time. Spotify supports a wide range of phones, computers, cars, televisions, speakers, game systems, and third-party integrations, making it a safe choice for households that do not want to standardize on one hardware brand.
A useful current update: Spotify now has lossless
Older 2025-era comparisons often treated Spotify as the major service missing lossless audio. Spotify’s current U.S. audio-quality documentation lists Premium lossless playback at up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. This is a meaningful improvement to Spotify’s position, but it should be described as a current update rather than silently projected backward across the entire 2025 review period.
Lossless is not guaranteed for every track or listening route. Compatible hardware, network conditions, app settings, and the particular version of a recording all matter. A wireless speaker, Bluetooth connection, car system, or other playback chain may not deliver the service’s maximum stated format.

Spotify Premium users can download music on up to five devices, with up to 10,000 tracks per device. Downloads must be brought online at least once every 30 days to remain active. That is generous for travel and commuting, but it is not a permanent backup of your music library: canceling Premium or failing to reconnect can remove access to downloaded playback.
Choose Spotify if: discovery, playlists, social sharing, broad device compatibility, and an established music-plus-podcasts ecosystem matter most.
Look elsewhere if: you primarily want a hi-res purchase library, a classical-first interface, or the deepest collection of unofficial and video-based versions.
2. Apple Music — best for Apple users
Apple Music is the strongest choice for a household centered on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and AirPods. Its appeal comes from integration as much as from the catalog: Apple devices, Siri, the Music app, family sharing, and Apple services work together with less friction than a cross-platform service may provide inside an Apple-only household.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe subscription includes an ad-free catalog, lossless audio, and Spatial Audio. It also includes the Apple Music Classical app, which Apple presents as a dedicated classical service with a large catalog in high audio quality. Classical listeners may value the separate interface because composer, work, movement, and performer metadata often matter more than a conventional song-by-song pop layout.
Apple Music can also be included in Apple One. For a household already paying for several Apple subscriptions, the relevant question is not simply the standalone Music price; it is whether the bundle replaces services you would otherwise pay for separately. Conversely, Apple Music is less compelling if you use mostly Android, Windows, non-Apple speakers, or another ecosystem and will not benefit from the integration.
Spatial Audio and lossless caveats
Apple Music’s support for lossless and Dolby Atmos, marketed as Spatial Audio, does not mean every track is available in both formats or that every listening setup receives the maximum quality. Device support, connection method, plan, settings, and country can affect what is available. Bluetooth listening should not be assumed to deliver the full theoretical lossless specification simply because the source service offers lossless files.

- Grab, Go, Listen: A classic design refined with simple controls and effortless portability. Easy to use and take anywhere, and supports wireless stereo pairing.
Choose Apple Music if: your household already uses Apple hardware, Apple One, AirPods, Siri, or Apple Music Classical, and you want lossless and immersive audio in the same subscription.
Look elsewhere if: playlist portability, broad non-Apple device coverage, or YouTube’s unusual versions and uploads matters more than ecosystem integration.
3. YouTube Music — best for YouTube users and obscure recordings
YouTube Music is the best option for listeners who treat music as more than a collection of official album files. Its relationship with the wider YouTube ecosystem gives it access to music videos, live performances, covers, remixes, DJ sets, alternate versions, artist uploads, and recordings that may not appear in a conventional streaming catalog.
That breadth is both the service’s greatest advantage and its main source of confusion. A search may return an official audio release, a music video, a fan-uploaded performance, a live recording, or a lower-quality duplicate. If you want the canonical album version with consistent metadata, inspect the release type rather than assuming the first result is equivalent to an official audio track.
YouTube Music Premium provides ad-free music, background playback, audio-only listening, and downloads. A broader YouTube Premium subscription includes those music benefits while also removing ads from eligible YouTube videos, supporting background playback, and allowing video downloads. For someone who watches YouTube every day, YouTube Premium can therefore be a better household purchase than buying a music subscription and continuing to tolerate video advertising separately.
Moving playlists to YouTube Music
Google supports playlist transfers from other services. The transfer can bring across playlists, albums, artists, and tracks, but it is not a permanent two-way synchronization system. Changes made after the transfer do not automatically update the original service, some tracks may fail to match, and podcasts are not imported or exported through this feature. Check the resulting playlists before canceling the old subscription.
Choose YouTube Music if: you regularly want music videos, covers, remixes, live material, DJ sets, rare recordings, or ad-free YouTube video as part of the same household subscription.
Look elsewhere if: you want a carefully controlled album catalog, specialist hi-res purchasing, or a listening experience that separates official releases from the wider video ecosystem.
4. Amazon Music Unlimited — best for Prime households
Amazon Music Unlimited is the most logical pick for people already invested in Amazon Prime, Alexa, Echo, or Audible. Amazon’s U.S. Music Unlimited page states that the service offers more than 100 million songs, ad-free on-demand listening, HD and Ultra HD content, spatial audio, and access to an audiobook benefit for eligible subscribers.
Prime members receive a lower stated monthly price than non-Prime customers on Amazon’s U.S. pages. The supplied pricing examples, checked August 11, 2026, showed $10.99 per month for Prime members and $11.99 per month for non-Prime customers, before applicable taxes and subject to change. Amazon also presents an annual option for Prime members. Treat those figures as dated U.S. examples, not permanent worldwide prices.
Do not confuse Prime Music with Music Unlimited
Music included with a Prime membership is not the same product as Amazon Music Unlimited. Prime can provide music access, but Music Unlimited is the separate subscription intended for a much broader on-demand catalog and the full set of HD, Ultra HD, and spatial-audio benefits. If you need a particular album or want reliable on-demand control, confirm which service your account is offering before assuming Prime alone includes it.

- Wireless Bluetooth streaming
- 12 hours of playtime
- IPX7 waterproof
- Pair multiple speakers with party boost
- Premium JBL sound quality
There is also a plan-level audio caveat: Amazon’s help documentation states that the Single Device Plan does not include HD, Ultra HD, or spatial audio. Do not select a cheaper device-limited plan and assume it carries the same audio features as the full Music Unlimited offering.
Choose Amazon Music Unlimited if: you already pay for Prime, use Alexa or Echo speakers, want music and audiobooks in one ecosystem, or value HD and spatial-audio options without moving to a specialist service.
Look elsewhere if: your priority is the strongest social-discovery experience, an unusually deep video-based catalog, or buying and keeping hi-res downloads.
5. TIDAL — best for hi-fi listeners who want immersive formats
TIDAL is aimed at listeners who actively care about the playback format, album presentation, immersive audio, and hi-fi integrations. Its current U.S. pricing page lists more than 180 million tracks in lossless, HiRes FLAC, and Dolby Atmos, along with ad-free and offline listening.
At the time of the August 11, 2026 check, the U.S. pricing examples were $11.99 per month for Individual, $19.99 for Family, and $6.99 for Student, plus applicable sales tax. TIDAL also lists a DJ Extension as an optional add-on. Pricing, eligibility, supported devices, and available content can change, so these should be confirmed on the current U.S. pricing page before publication or purchase.
Why choose TIDAL over a general-purpose service?
TIDAL’s case is strongest when Dolby Atmos, HiRes FLAC, and a more audio-focused presentation are not merely nice extras but part of how you intend to listen. Dolby Atmos Music is listed as available to Individual and Family members. TIDAL can also be relevant to DJs through its TIDAL DJ Extension, although compatibility with particular DJ software, controllers, and hardware must be checked individually.

Do not carry forward older comparisons that describe TIDAL primarily through MQA or previous multi-tier pricing. The current public offer is described in terms of lossless, HiRes FLAC, and Dolby Atmos. Individual albums, formats, devices, and partner integrations may still vary.
Choose TIDAL if: lossless and hi-res formats, Dolby Atmos, artist-focused presentation, offline listening, or DJ integrations are central to your decision.
Look elsewhere if: you mainly want the best recommendations and social tools, need the broadest collection of video-based versions, or do not have equipment that can make use of the service’s more demanding formats.
6. Qobuz — best for hi-res streaming and downloads
Qobuz is the most distinctive choice for serious music buyers because it combines a streaming subscription with the option to purchase downloads. Its U.S. offers page advertises more than 100 million tracks, lossless and hi-res playback, and FLAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz. It supports offline listening and offers Studio, Sublime, Solo, Duo, Family, and Student variants.

Streaming gives you access while the subscription remains active; a purchased download is a separate music purchase that can remain in your collection under the applicable terms. Qobuz’s Sublime tier adds discounts on music purchases, advertised at up to 60 percent on hi-res downloads. That makes Qobuz particularly attractive to listeners who buy selected albums rather than treating every recording as temporary streaming access.

One current U.S. pricing example listed Qobuz Studio from $10.83 per month depending on billing structure. That figure is not a universal monthly price: billing frequency, plan type, promotions, tax, and geography can change the effective cost.
Hi-res is not automatically better
Qobuz’s 24-bit/192 kHz maximum describes the highest advertised playback capability, not the quality of every track. A recording may be available in a lower resolution, may use a mastering you prefer less, or may sound no different from a well-mastered lower-resolution version in your listening environment. The audible result depends on the source master, headphones or speakers, amplifier and connection, room, playback software, and your own preferences.
Choose Qobuz if: you have compatible wired or networked hi-fi equipment, want a hi-res catalog, and value the ability to buy discounted downloads.

What hardware do you actually need?
You do not need expensive equipment to start using any of these services. A phone, computer, or existing speaker is enough for ordinary listening. Hardware becomes relevant when you are specifically choosing a service for lossless, hi-res, or Spatial Audio playback.
- Headphones: If you are comparing lossless services, start with headphones for lossless music that suit your comfort, fit, source device, and connection method. Do not buy a particular model merely because a service advertises a higher resolution.
- Wired equipment: A compatible wired chain makes it easier to evaluate the source format than a playback route that compresses or resamples audio. That does not guarantee an audible improvement, and wireless listening can still be perfectly satisfactory.
- DACs: A USB DAC for hi-res music can be useful in a desktop or wired hi-fi setup if the computer or phone’s built-in output is the limiting component. It is an optional accessory, not a prerequisite for Spotify, Apple Music, TIDAL, Qobuz, or Amazon Music Unlimited.
- Smart speakers: A smart speaker for music streaming is most useful when voice control and ecosystem compatibility matter. Check whether the specific speaker supports your chosen service and which controls are available; compatibility differs between Alexa, Google, Apple, and third-party devices.
The practical rule is simple: choose the service for its catalog, interface, and ecosystem first. Upgrade hardware only after identifying a real limitation in your current setup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Audio quality: what the numbers do and do not tell you
Lossless, hi-res, and Dolby Atmos describe different things. Lossless refers to how audio data is compressed; hi-res generally indicates a higher-than-CD resolution; Dolby Atmos is an immersive mixing and playback format. They should not be treated as interchangeable grades on a single ladder.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Even within one service, availability can vary by album and territory. A service’s advertised maximum is not a promise that every song is offered at that resolution, that the original master was better, or that your phone, headphones, speaker, car, or wireless connection will reproduce it. Mastering differences can matter as much as file resolution, and a listener may prefer a service’s catalog or interface without hearing a meaningful difference in formats.
For most people, the best upgrade is reliable playback, comfortable headphones or speakers, and a service that makes it easy to find music they actually want to hear. Hi-res hardware is most defensible for enthusiasts who already have compatible equipment and understand the limits of their playback chain.
Prices, bundles, and plan traps
Streaming prices are unusually volatile. The following are dated U.S. examples from the supplied research, checked August 11, 2026:
- TIDAL: Individual $11.99 per month, Family $19.99, and Student $6.99, plus applicable sales tax.
- Amazon Music Unlimited: the cited U.S. pages showed $11.99 per month for non-Prime customers and $10.99 for Prime members. Prime members may also see an annual option.
- Qobuz: Studio from $10.83 per month depending on billing structure.
These numbers may be superseded by the time you read them and may differ by country, app store, promotion, tax, account, or billing frequency. Apple Music and Spotify plan pricing should likewise be checked on their current official plan pages rather than copied from an old comparison.

Which service should you choose?
Choose Spotify for the safest all-purpose recommendation, especially if discovery, playlists, sharing, and cross-platform support come first.
Choose Apple Music if your household uses Apple devices, Apple One, AirPods, or Apple Music Classical.
Choose YouTube Music or YouTube Premium if you spend substantial time on YouTube or want covers, remixes, live recordings, DJ sets, music videos, and ad-free video.
Choose Amazon Music Unlimited if Prime, Alexa, Echo, Audible-related benefits, HD audio, or spatial audio add value.

Choose TIDAL if Dolby Atmos, HiRes FLAC, offline hi-fi listening, and optional DJ features are priorities.
Choose Qobuz if hi-res playback and buying music to keep matter more than social features, podcasts, or video.
How this ranking was made
These recommendations compare documented features, plan positioning, formats, ecosystem strengths, and practical use cases. They are not based on undisclosed listening tests, measured sound-quality differences, a complete catalog audit, or personal hands-on experience. Catalog sizes and format claims are presented as the services describe them and should not be interpreted as independent measurements.
Because availability changes frequently, confirm the current official plan and support information for your country before subscribing. Pay particular attention to family rules, student verification, audiobook allowances, offline limits, Spatial Audio or Dolby Atmos availability, and whether a particular device can play the format you are paying for.

Is Spotify still the best music streaming service if audio quality is the priority?
It can be, especially if discovery and playlists matter as much as sound quality. Spotify’s current U.S. documentation lists Premium lossless playback up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC, but that is a current update and may not describe the service throughout the original 2025 period. TIDAL, Qobuz, Apple Music, and Amazon Music Unlimited may be better fits if you specifically want broader hi-res or immersive-audio options.
Which is better for hi-res music: TIDAL or Qobuz?
Choose TIDAL if Dolby Atmos, a broad hi-fi presentation, or the optional DJ Extension matters. Choose Qobuz if you want hi-res streaming combined with discounted purchases of downloadable music. Neither service guarantees that every album is available at its maximum resolution, and equipment and mastering affect the result.
Is Amazon Music included with Amazon Prime?
Prime and Amazon Music Unlimited are separate offerings. Prime may include a more limited music benefit, while Music Unlimited is the separate subscription for the broader on-demand catalog and the full set of HD, Ultra HD, and spatial-audio features. Prime members may receive a lower Music Unlimited price, but the current plan page should be checked before subscribing.
Do I need a DAC or special headphones for lossless streaming?
No. You can use any compatible phone, computer, or speaker to begin listening. A USB DAC and suitable wired headphones can be useful in a desktop or hi-fi setup, but they are optional. The playback device, connection method, settings, specific recording, and mastering all affect what you actually hear.

Can I move my playlists to YouTube Music?
Google supports transfers of playlists, albums, artists, and tracks from other services. Some tracks may fail to match, changes do not automatically synchronize with the original service, and podcasts are not imported or exported through that feature. Review the transferred playlists before canceling the old subscription.
The Bottom Line
For most listeners, start with Spotify. Move to Apple Music for an Apple-centered household, YouTube Music for video-based and obscure recordings, Amazon Music Unlimited for Prime and Alexa value, TIDAL for immersive hi-fi features, or Qobuz for hi-res streaming with downloadable purchases. The best service is the one that fits your devices, listening habits, household subscriptions, and actual music library—not simply the one advertising the largest catalog or highest number.
