Spotify was the best all-round music streaming app for most Android and iPhone users in 2022, thanks to its free tier, discovery tools, playlists and broad device support. Apple Music was the stronger choice for many iPhone owners and anyone seeking lossless or Dolby Atmos audio; YouTube Music stood out for videos, covers and live recordings. Audiophiles could look to Qobuz or Tidal, Prime and Alexa households to Amazon Music, and passive listeners to Pandora.
This is a historical comparison of the US services and plans available in 2022—not a guide to today’s features or prices. In particular, Spotify did not offer lossless streaming in 2022, though its current product has since changed. [Spotify’s current Premium information]

Prices and plan terms varied over 2022 and differed by billing route, offers and eligibility. Exact catalogue counts are also poor tie-breakers: providers count versions and releases differently, and licensing can vary by country. Check your essential artists and albums before switching. 1. Spotify: best overall
Spotify was the safest recommendation if you wanted an app that worked across phones, computers, cars, consoles and speakers, and helped you decide what to play next. Its personalised playlists, new-release features, radio and autoplay made discovery a central strength. Collaborative playlists and social sharing also suited households and friend groups using different kinds of devices. Contemporary comparisons regularly rated it highly for discovery, compatibility and overall usability. [Tech Advisor]

The free, ad-supported tier made Spotify especially useful if you were not ready to subscribe. Free listening came with advertisements and playback restrictions that differed between mobile and desktop; it was not equivalent to unrestricted paid on-demand listening. Premium added offline downloads and fewer interruptions. Downloads were app-cached access, not files you owned, and generally stopped working if the subscription ended or the app needed to reauthenticate.
The major compromise was sound: Spotify offered high-quality lossy streaming, but not lossless streaming in 2022. If pristine audio was a priority, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer, Qobuz or Tidal had a stronger technical case. [MusicTech’s 2022 comparison]
2. Apple Music: best for iPhone owners and lossless audio
Apple Music made the most sense if you used an iPhone alongside Apple Watch, HomePod, AirPods, CarPlay or Siri. That integration can make everyday controls and hand-offs convenient, but it does not mean every iPhone owner will prefer its interface or recommendations. Spotify remained compelling for cross-platform continuity and social playlists.

Apple Music was also available on Android, so choosing it did not require owning an iPhone. Its standout value in 2022 was that lossless audio and Dolby Atmos/spatial audio were included in the standard paid subscription after Apple’s 2021 rollout. [TechRadar’s comparison]
There was no permanent free tier comparable to Spotify’s. And lossless is not automatically audible: the recording master, headphones or speakers, amplifier and connection all matter. Many Bluetooth listening chains cannot deliver the full technical benefit of lossless files. Spatial mixes are not available for every song, and some listeners prefer a track’s stereo mix.

3. YouTube Music: best for videos, covers and unusual versions
YouTube Music’s advantage was the material around the standard album catalogue: music videos, live performances, covers, remixes and other recordings associated with YouTube. If you often searched for a specific live version or an unofficial performance, this breadth could matter more than a headline track count. Its connection to the broader YouTube service also made it a natural fit for people already using YouTube heavily.
The free tier was ad-supported and limited; background playback and downloads generally required a paid plan. YouTube Premium could be a better overall entertainment bundle if you also wanted ad-free viewing on the main YouTube service and background video playback. It is not a like-for-like comparison with a music-only subscription, so count only the benefits you would actually use. [Tech Advisor]
4. Amazon Music: best for Prime members and Alexa households
Amazon Music was most attractive if you already had Prime, used Alexa, or wanted lossless and high-resolution options. Alexa integration could make voice control useful at home, while Amazon Music’s HD and Ultra HD options offered a stronger sound-quality proposition than Spotify did in 2022. Do not confuse Prime Music with Amazon Music Unlimited. Prime Music came with catalogue or playback restrictions; Unlimited was Amazon’s full on-demand service. Having Prime did not automatically mean you had the same unrestricted experience as an Unlimited subscriber. Compare the actual access you receive with the service you need, rather than treating a Prime bundle as a free equivalent.
5. Tidal: best for hi-fi listeners who want more than audio
Tidal suited listeners who wanted high-quality audio alongside artist-focused editorial material and music videos. Its 2022 HiFi and HiFi Plus tiers offered different combinations of lossless, hi-res and immersive formats, with availability depending on the plan and track. The format names and plan distinctions made direct comparisons less straightforward than Apple Music’s included lossless offering. [MusicTech]

Consider Tidal if you will use its high-quality options and your equipment can take advantage of them. If discovery, easy recommendations and household-wide device support matter more, Spotify or Apple Music may be a better everyday fit.

6. Qobuz: best for high-resolution FLAC and music purchases
Qobuz was a strong choice for listeners who prioritised high-resolution FLAC, wanted editorial context around albums, or valued the option to buy music as well as stream it. That makes it more specialist than a default family recommendation. Its less mainstream app and device ecosystem could be a drawback if you rely on many smart speakers, TVs, watches or car systems. Choose it for the listening and purchase features you specifically want—not just because a higher resolution number sounds better. A file’s resolution cannot compensate for a master you dislike or a playback chain that cannot use it.
7. Deezer: a polished alternative
Deezer offered a broad catalogue, playlists and a lossless HiFi option, making it a credible alternative if Spotify or Apple Music did not suit you. It was less obvious why a typical listener should switch if they were already happy with one of those services. The deciding factor may be a particular feature, library match or interface preference; check those directly rather than assuming a service’s catalogue claim settles it. [Tech Advisor]
8. Pandora: best for station-based listening
Pandora remained a good fit if you wanted to choose a station or artist and let the service keep playing, rather than building queues and selecting full albums. Its free experience was oriented around stations, while paid options added more on-demand control. Choose by what matters most
- Best recommendations and playlists: Spotify is the strongest general-purpose pick, particularly if you want algorithmic mixes, new-release discovery and social tools. Apple Music leans more on editorial curation and its connection to your Apple library; Pandora is better for passive station listening.
- Best for iPhone, AirPods and Apple hardware: Apple Music. Choose Spotify instead if you value cross-platform continuity or its social and playlist features more.
- Best for Android and Google/YouTube users: YouTube Music if videos, covers and live versions are central; Spotify if you want a more general cross-platform service. Apple Music and Tidal were also available on Android.
- Best for lossless sound included in the subscription: Apple Music was a particularly simple value proposition in 2022. Qobuz was compelling for high-resolution FLAC; Tidal and Amazon Music offered higher-quality options with plan or track distinctions.
- Best if you already pay for Prime: Amazon Music is worth checking, especially with Alexa—but verify whether your listening needs require Unlimited rather than restricted Prime Music.
- Best if you want music video and YouTube benefits: YouTube Premium, if its ad-free main YouTube service is worth bundling for you; YouTube Music alone is not the whole bundle.
- Best for radio-style listening: Pandora. For free background listening, Spotify is another option, but expect ads and restrictions.
- Best for a family: Compare the number of separate accounts, household eligibility rules, parental controls, simultaneous streams and child profiles for the exact plan. Family plans generally help keep each listener’s library and recommendations separate; terms and prices changed, so verify the 2022 offer relevant to your date and location.
- Best for limited mobile data: Use a paid plan that supports downloads, set download quality deliberately and confirm the app is playing downloaded items rather than streaming over cellular. High-resolution files consume more data and storage.
Spotify vs. Apple Music
Pick Spotify if discovery, the permanent free tier, social playlists and using one account across a mixed-device household are your priorities. Pick Apple Music if Apple-device integration or lossless and Dolby Atmos audio matters more. Both were available on Android and iPhone; the meaningful distinction was the experience and ecosystem, not simply whether an app existed on your phone.
Apple Music vs. YouTube Music
Apple Music was the clearer choice for Apple hardware integration, lossless audio and a conventional music-library experience. YouTube Music was more distinctive for videos, covers, remixes and performances, and could deliver more value when bundled with YouTube Premium. Neither is automatically better for every iPhone or Android owner.

Spotify was the more natural default for playlist-led discovery, social listening and a free music tier. YouTube Music had an edge when the version you wanted was a video, cover, remix or live performance. Choose based on how often you use that video-linked catalogue, and whether YouTube Premium’s broader benefits matter.
Apple Music vs. Tidal or Qobuz for sound
Apple Music offered a straightforward combination of lossless and Dolby Atmos/spatial audio at no additional charge within its paid plan. Tidal offered multiple quality and immersive formats tied to its 2022 plans and catalogue. Qobuz emphasised high-resolution FLAC and purchases. The best fit depends on the formats you want, the tracks available in them, and your playback equipment—not just the maximum specification.

Amazon Music vs. Apple Music for lossless value
Both offered higher-quality listening options, but Apple Music’s lossless and spatial audio inclusion was easier to understand as part of its standard paid service. Amazon Music could make more sense if Prime and Alexa were already central to your household; first establish whether Prime Music is sufficient or Unlimited is required. Compare bundles only against benefits you would otherwise pay for.

Spotify vs. Pandora for free listening
Spotify was better if you wanted a large on-demand library and playlists, accepting ads and restrictions. Pandora was better if you wanted a station to play in the background with little track-by-track management. Neither should be described as an unrestricted, ad-free free substitute for a paid service.
Before switching: a practical checklist
- Check your must-have music. Search for essential artists, albums and specific versions, including live, clean, deluxe or regional releases. Catalogue numbers are provider claims and do not guarantee your version is available in your country.
- Test the app on your actual devices. Try your phone, car connection, computer, speaker and watch where relevant. Android and iPhone apps can differ in controls and integrations even when both are supported.
- Try discovery, not just your favourites. Use mixes, radio, new-release tools and search for a few unfamiliar artists. Recommendations are personal; there is no documented universal winner.
- Move playlists carefully. Transfer tools can help, but matches are imperfect. Inspect obscure tracks, alternate versions and local files, and keep an export or other record before cancelling the old account.
- Test offline playback before travelling. Download a playlist over Wi-Fi, switch on airplane mode and confirm it plays. Downloads are licensed app caches, not MP3s you own; they can stop working when a subscription ends or reauthentication is required.
- Check data and storage settings. High-quality and high-resolution downloads use more space. Confirm cellular streaming is off or appropriately limited if your data allowance is small.
- Check household terms. Before choosing a family plan, confirm account separation, household rules, child controls and simultaneous-use limits for the actual 2022 plan in your market.
Common offline problems include the app switching back to cellular streaming, storage filling up, a download becoming unavailable after a licence or account change, or a family member listening on the wrong profile and changing recommendations. Recheck the account, profile, download status, storage and network settings before assuming your library is gone. Keep the old subscription active until the new service has passed these tests.
What to know about sound quality
Lossy audio compresses sound to reduce file size; lossless preserves the source data in the delivered audio file. Bit depth and sample rate describe technical properties, not a promise that every listener will hear a difference. High-resolution streaming can increase bandwidth and storage use, and Bluetooth, a phone’s output, headphones or speakers may become the limiting link. The quality of the master matters too. Dolby Atmos or other spatial formats can create a different presentation, but availability is track-specific and the result is a matter of preference as well as equipment.
For many listeners, easier discovery, dependable car playback and a useful library matter more day to day than a specification they cannot hear through their headphones. Do not choose a service solely by a maximum bitrate or sample-rate figure.
Free, trials and privacy
A free tier, a time-limited trial and access bundled with another subscription are different things. Spotify and YouTube Music offered ad-supported listening, but with limitations; Pandora’s free experience centred on stations. Apple Music, Tidal, Qobuz and Amazon Music Unlimited were primarily paid services. A trial expires, and offline access should be assumed to require a paid plan unless the provider explicitly says otherwise.
Free tiers use advertising and services also rely on listening activity to personalise recommendations. Review privacy and account settings if you want to limit how your listening history is used. Artist compensation is not reducible to a simple ranking: payments depend on territory, contracts, rights ownership and stream type, so these comparisons do not identify a universal “best-paying” app.
