If you want Christmas action without another trip through Nakatomi Plaza, start with The Long Kiss Goodnight for a classic seasonal action thriller, Batman Returns for gothic superhero spectacle, or Violent Night for an intentionally bloody holiday action-comedy. The right pick depends on whether you want Christmas to shape the setting, the tone, or the entire premise.
What makes a good Christmas action movie?
There is no defensible universal ranking: these films use the holiday in different ways. Some set a conventional action plot against Christmas decorations; others make the season central to the premise or use it to heighten an unusually grim or comic tone. The recommendations below are organized by the kind of watch you want, not by an objective score.
Die Hard remains the comparison point: 20th Century Studios describes the 1988, R-rated action/adventure as a cop’s Christmas visit interrupted by a terrorist invasion. Director John McTiernan told the British Film Institute, “We hadn’t intended it to be a Christmas movie,” a useful detail in a debate that the quote does not settle. 20th Century Studios’ film page and the BFI’s Christmas action selections offer context for the familiar benchmark.
Best Christmas action movies by mood
For a classic action-thriller structure: The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)
Renny Harlin’s film is the closest match for viewers who want the pacing and shape of a 1990s action thriller with Christmas firmly in the picture. Geena Davis plays Samantha Caine, a small-town homemaker and amnesiac whose memories suggest a former life as an assassin. Samuel L. Jackson is the private investigator who helps her uncover that past. Christmas imagery is more than background dressing: a parade sequence features Caine dressed as Mrs. Claus. Choose this for a two-hander and an identity-revealing thriller rather than a purely festive comedy. The BFI’s selection and the San Francisco Chronicle’s holiday action-movie list describe the film and its seasonal elements.

- Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas - Blu-ray Brand New
For gothic holiday spectacle: Batman Returns (1992)
Tim Burton’s Christmas-set superhero film sends Batman after the Penguin and Catwoman in a Gotham full of holiday decoration. Its appeal is stylized comic-book action and a strong seasonal atmosphere, not the grounded crime-thriller feel of Die Hard or The Long Kiss Goodnight. Pick it when you want an unmistakably wintry setting with a gothic edge. The San Francisco Chronicle includes it among its Christmas action choices.
For the most overtly holiday-centered, bloody comedy: Violent Night (2022)
In this action, dark-comedy and holiday film, mercenaries take a wealthy family hostage and Santa becomes their unexpected opponent. It is the most direct pick if you want Christmas at the center of the setup and are comfortable with a deliberately crude, violent approach. Universal rates it R for strong bloody violence, language throughout and some sexual references, so it is a poor default for a mixed-age group. Universal’s official film page supplies its genre, premise and rating.
Rank #2
For a severe revenge story: Silent Night (2023)
John Woo’s film follows a father seeking revenge on the gangsters responsible for his son’s death shortly before Christmas. After the protagonist is shot in the throat, the film plays almost entirely without dialogue. That near-silent format and grim premise make it a hard-edged alternative, not a light seasonal watch. The BFI and San Francisco Chronicle both note its unusually sparse dialogue.
For a contained thriller: Turbulence (1997)
A Christmas Eve flight is disrupted by a violent prisoner, with the action confined to a plane dressed for the holiday. Its single-location setup makes it a good choice when you want a compact high-concept thriller rather than a sprawling spectacle. The BFI describes the seasonal flight premise.
Rank #3
For a less obvious international pick: Running Out of Time 2 (2001)
This Hong Kong cat-and-mouse thriller follows Inspector Ho as he pursues a magician-like criminal. Christmas decorations and a festive finale give the chase its seasonal frame. It is a deeper cut for viewers who have already seen the better-known holiday action titles. The premise and Christmas details are noted by the BFI.
For a lighter, comedy-leaning adjacent choice: El Camino Christmas (2017)
A hostage situation unfolds in a liquor store on Christmas Eve, but this film leans more toward comedy than action. Treat it as an adjacent pick when you want a seasonal crime setup with a lighter emphasis, not as a substitute for the harder-action entries. The San Francisco Chronicle makes that comedy-versus-action distinction.
Rank #4
- Jack Skellington, king of Halloweentown, discovers Christmas Town, but doesn't quite understand the concept.

What to pick for a group watch
Use the intended audience and tolerance for violence as a filter before deciding on the holiday setting. For the clearest content flag in this group, Universal’s R rating for Violent Night specifically cites strong bloody violence, language throughout and some sexual references. For a grim alternative, Silent Night is built around revenge after a child’s death and has almost no dialogue; its quiet format should not be mistaken for a gentle film. If you want a more conventional action-thriller shape, The Long Kiss Goodnight is the most direct fit among these choices.
