Spoiler warning: This explanation covers the ending of The Beast in Me, including the fates of Madison, Teddy, Nile, Aggie, Nina, Martin, Rick, and Abbott.

Nile killed Madison and Teddy. He murdered Madison after discovering that she was cooperating with the FBI, then helped his family bury her beneath Jarvis Yards. Later, he kidnapped and strangled Teddy and staged the body to frame Aggie. The literal mystery is solved, but the series’ larger question is more complicated: how much responsibility belongs to the people who do the violence, and how much belongs to those whose anger, denial, or self-interest makes it possible?

Spoilers for the entire Netflix limited series The Beast in Me.

Nile Jarvis killed Madison “Maddie” Jarvis and helped his family bury her body beneath the foundations of Jarvis Yards. He also kidnapped and strangled Teddy Fenig, the teenager connected to the crash that killed Aggie and Shelley’s son, Cooper. Nile then staged Teddy’s body in Cooper’s room to make it appear that Aggie had kidnapped, tortured, and murdered him.

Aggie did not kill Teddy, but the ending insists that her hands are not entirely clean. Her anger and revenge fantasy helped Nile convince himself that he was giving her what she wanted. That moral complication is the key to the title: the “beast” is not only Nile. It is also the rage, denial, family loyalty, greed, and desire for retribution that allow violence to grow.

What really happened to Madison?

Madison’s disappearance was presented as a suicide, but that explanation was a cover story. The note Aggie saw was from an earlier suicide attempt, not a genuine account of Madison’s final fate.

Madison had discovered—or become involved in—the FBI investigation into the Jarvis family’s use of cartel money in the Jarvis Yards real-estate development. Nina, Madison’s former personal assistant, initially looks like the likely informant. The series eventually reveals that Madison was the person cooperating with the FBI.

Nile realized that Madison represented a direct threat to him and to the family business. He confronted her and killed her in a violent rage. His father, Martin, and his uncle, Rick, then helped conceal the crime by burying Madison in the foundations of Jarvis Yards.

That cover-up is important because the series does not portray Madison’s murder as an isolated act by one uniquely evil man. Nile committed the killing, but the family system protected him. Martin and Rick valued the Jarvis legacy and business enough to hide the truth. Madison’s parents also defended Nile in part because their financial security was tied to Jarvis Yards. Money, fear, loyalty, and denial kept the false suicide explanation alive.

Why did Nile kill Teddy?

Teddy Fenig was the teenager involved in the car accident that killed Cooper. Aggie spent much of the series treating Teddy as the person responsible and directing her grief toward him. But the finale reveals a more complicated version of the crash: Aggie was distracted by a phone interview while Cooper was in the car.

This does not make Teddy innocent of every fact surrounding the accident, but it makes Aggie’s public version of events morally incomplete. She had used Teddy’s guilt to avoid looking directly at her own distraction, helplessness, and responsibility.

Nile recognized how much anger Aggie carried. He interpreted her desire for Teddy to suffer as an unspoken request for extreme revenge. In his distorted view, kidnapping Teddy was an act of affection: he believed he was doing for Aggie what she could not do herself.

He held Teddy captive and eventually strangled him. After Aggie found evidence linking Nile to Madison’s murder, Nile turned Teddy’s death into a trap. He placed Teddy’s body in Cooper’s room and directed Aggie upstairs while the police closed in. His plan was to make the authorities believe that Aggie had abducted, tortured, and killed Teddy.

Did Aggie kill Teddy?

No. Nile physically kidnapped and murdered Teddy. Aggie is arrested because Nile stages the evidence to implicate her, but the evidence ultimately clears her of Teddy’s murder.

When Nile tells Aggie, “We did it together,” he is not describing the literal events. Aggie did not help him kidnap Teddy, strangle him, or place his body in Cooper’s room.

But the statement captures the finale’s moral argument. Aggie had expressed intense resentment toward Teddy and allowed herself to imagine punishment. She did not commit the act, yet she failed to confront the destructive fantasy that Nile recognized and exploited. The series distinguishes between committing violence and creating—or tolerating—the conditions in which violence becomes possible. It does not say those things are identical, but it refuses to treat the second as meaningless.

How does Nina expose Nile?

Aggie and FBI agent Brian Abbott investigate the evidence connected to Teddy. Nile kills Abbott by bludgeoning him, making the danger around the case even more direct. Aggie then turns to Nina, who is pregnant with Nile’s child.

Nina has spent much of the story looking away from evidence of Nile’s violence. Aggie reaches her by admitting her own denial about the accident that killed Cooper. She argues that Nina is using a similar kind of denial to protect herself from the truth about Nile.

Nina eventually confronts Nile with the evidence against him, including Madison’s journal, the misleading suicide note, and her own observations about Madison’s disappearance. Nile loses control and admits that he killed Madison. He also accuses Nina of pretending not to know what was happening and claims that she wanted Madison dead and used him as a weapon.

What Nile does not know is that Nina has secretly recorded the conversation. She plays the recording publicly during the Jarvis Yards announcement. Nile is arrested, and the recording helps expose both Madison’s murder and the family’s wider concealment of the truth.

What happens to Nile, Martin, and Rick?

Nile initially maintains his innocence. The case changes after Rick becomes a state witness. Before Rick is taken into custody, Martin suffers a stroke after Rick tells him that Nile is responsible for additional murders and that the family’s protection of him has failed.

Rick removes Martin’s life support, apparently believing that he is sparing him from living through the collapse of the Jarvis family and its legacy. The act is deliberately difficult to classify. It may be read as mercy, damage control, or another instance of Rick deciding that he has the right to determine who lives and dies.

Rick then arranges for Nile to be stabbed to death by another prisoner. Nile’s death is therefore not a clean courtroom resolution or a heroic act by Aggie. It is another private act of violence carried out through the same family network that helped conceal Madison’s murder.

After Rick cooperates with the authorities, Nile pleads guilty. Yet the family’s eventual role in bringing him down does not make its members innocent. Rick protected the Jarvis family, helped manage its collapse, removed Martin’s life support, and arranged Nile’s prison killing. His behavior is still part of the same culture of secrecy and self-appointed punishment.

What happens to Aggie?

Aggie is arrested after Nile’s frame-up, but the evidence from Nina clears her of Teddy’s murder. Months later, she publishes a book titled The Beast in Me.

At a public reading, Aggie admits that her hands are “far from clean.” She recognizes that she used Teddy’s guilt as a way to avoid confronting her own role in the car accident and her wish for revenge. She also acknowledges the devastating parallel between herself and the people she has condemned: through her actions and denials, she helped take a son from another mother.

This does not mean Aggie is secretly another Nile. The series does not reveal that she is a murderer or that she physically participated in Teddy’s death. Her responsibility is psychological and moral rather than literal. She looked toward a monster, allowed her darkest wish to be heard, and then had to face the consequences of that wish.

Aggie’s recovery is therefore not a conventional victory. Nile is gone, Madison’s murder is exposed, and Teddy is no longer falsely treated as Aggie’s killer. But Aggie does not return to innocence. Her final step forward comes from accepting the ugliest parts of herself instead of transferring every burden of blame onto Teddy or Nile.

The closing scenes suggest that she can begin living beyond the feud. Aggie meets Shelley’s new partner and smiles, indicating movement away from the obsessive conflict that has dominated her grief. Still, Nile remains psychologically significant. Facing him does not erase the part of herself that was drawn to the confrontation.

What happens to Nina and her baby?

Nina survives, exposes Nile, and gives birth to their child. The final image shows Nina with the baby, but a lingering doubt crosses her face.

The scene does not establish that the baby is evil or destined to become like Nile. Instead, it dramatizes Nina’s fear that violence, denial, privilege, and family patterns can be passed from one generation to the next.

Nina’s arc remains deliberately unresolved. She demonstrates courage by recording Nile and helping expose him, but she also spent much of the series protecting herself through selective blindness. The question now is whether she will raise her child inside the Jarvis tradition of concealment and entitlement or break that pattern.

The baby is therefore a symbol of possibility as much as danger. The series leaves Nina with a choice, not a prophecy.

What does the title The Beast in Me mean?

The title refers to several different “beasts.” Nile is the most obvious one: he uses violence, manipulation, and control to get what he wants. But the show also identifies destructive impulses in the people around him.

  • Aggie’s beast is her rage and desire to see Teddy punished.
  • The Jarvis family’s beast is its appetite for power, money, and legacy.
  • Nina’s beast is denial—the willingness to look away when truth threatens her security.
  • Rick’s beast is his readiness to use violence while calling it family protection.
  • The community’s beast is financial self-interest: people benefit from the system and therefore have reasons not to question it.

The series is not arguing that all these actions are equally terrible. Nile is responsible for murder. Aggie is not. But it does ask how ordinary compromises, convenient lies, and revenge fantasies can create space for someone like Nile to operate.

Grief is central to that idea. Aggie’s grief becomes anger because anger is easier to organize than guilt, helplessness, or uncertainty. Nile recognizes that anger and turns it into a violent performance. Their relationship is not a conventional romance and not simply a detective partnership. It is a collision between two people who recognize each other’s capacity for obsession, control, and emotional self-deception.

Is the ending happy?

The ending is cautiously restorative, but it is not conventionally happy. Madison’s truth is revealed. Nile is exposed and removed from the world. Teddy is no longer blamed for a murder he did not commit. Aggie publishes her book, and Nina survives with her child.

But Madison cannot be brought back. Cooper, Teddy, and Abbott are dead. Martin dies, Rick remains morally compromised, and Aggie must live with permanent responsibility for the story she helped set in motion.

The finale also rejects the satisfaction of simple retribution. Nile’s death may initially feel like justice, but the circumstances matter: he is killed through another concealed act of violence arranged by Rick. The show’s warning is that punishment does not automatically purify the people who deliver it.

In the end, justice can expose a dangerous person and stop further harm. It cannot undo the denials and choices that allowed the danger to grow. That is why Aggie’s confession matters as much as Nile’s arrest or death. The final resolution is not “good defeated evil.” It is an acknowledgment that people can oppose evil while still carrying the consequences of what they wanted, ignored, or enabled.
