- Yellow: Think of words used to describe expensive, fashionable, or prestige goods.

The 16 words in Connections No. 499
Here is the complete grid:
| Words | Words | Words | Words |
|---|---|---|---|
| DESIGNER | ENGINEER | HATCH | TAG |
| GALILEO | MARCO POLO | MASTERMIND | VIKING |
| BINGO | PIONEER | LUXURY | CONCOCT |
| HAUTE | VOYAGER | UNO | HIGH-END |
Connections No. 499 answers
Yellow: BRAND-NAME
DESIGNER, HAUTE, HIGH-END, LUXURY
These four words can describe premium, fashionable, or expensive goods. A designer item is associated with a recognized fashion or luxury label; haute is used in expressions such as haute couture; and high-end and luxury both signal the upper tier of a market.
Green: DEVISE
CONCOCT, ENGINEER, HATCH, MASTERMIND
Each word can describe creating, planning, or arranging an idea, plan, or scheme. You can concoct a story, engineer an outcome, or hatch a plan. As a verb, mastermind means to devise or direct something, often a complicated plan.
Blue: NASA SPACECRAFT
GALILEO, PIONEER, VIKING, VOYAGER
These names are associated with NASA spacecraft or planetary-mission programs. Galileo studied Jupiter and its moons, the Pioneer program included early planetary probes, the Viking missions sent landers to Mars, and the Voyager spacecraft explored the outer planets before continuing into interstellar space.
Rank #2
The archived answer guide from Forbes corroborates this grouping and the other three solutions.
Purple: GAMES WHERE YOU SAY THE GAME’S NAME
BINGO, MARCO POLO, TAG, UNO
The connection is wordplay based on what players call out during the game. In bingo, a player announces “Bingo!” after completing the required pattern. In Marco Polo, one player calls “Marco” and the others respond “Polo.” In tag, calling “Tag!” identifies the action of tagging another player. In Uno, a player is expected to say “Uno” when left with one card.
Why this puzzle was tricky
Several words in the grid point convincingly toward more than one possible category. MARCO POLO, PIONEER, VIKING, and VOYAGER can all evoke explorers or exploration, but only the latter three seem to form a space-related set until Galileo completes the intended NASA group. Galileo is especially deceptive because it is better known as the name of the Italian astronomer.

MASTERMIND is another trap. It can look like a game alongside Bingo, Uno, and Tag, but its role here is as a verb meaning to devise or direct a plan. The green group becomes more apparent when concoct, engineer, and hatch are read as verbs rather than as general nouns or associations.
The yellow group also uses broad descriptive language rather than specific brand names. Designer, haute, high-end, and luxury all belong to the vocabulary of premium goods, which makes them a clean set once the competing word associations have been removed.

How Connections works
Connections presents 16 words and asks players to divide them into four groups of four based on a shared connection. A word can appear to fit multiple groups, so the intended solution depends on finding a complete, non-overlapping partition. The game is available through the NYT website and Games app; access and account requirements can change, so check the current NYT Help Center information for the latest details.
