Yes—Jack Black is Steve. In A Minecraft Movie (2025), Black plays the film’s speaking, fully characterized version of Steve: an “expert crafter” who understands the Overworld and helps four newcomers survive it.
This Steve is connected to Minecraft’s familiar default-style player character, but the movie gives him a personality, history, dialogue, and a specific role in an original live-action adventure. He is not simply a silent player avatar brought to the screen.
A Minecraft Movie cast and characters
| Actor | Character | Role in the story |
|---|---|---|
| Jack Black | Steve | An expert crafter and guide to the Minecraft world |
| Jason Momoa | Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison | One of four outsiders transported into the Overworld |
| Sebastian Hansen | Henry | A member of the group pulled through the portal |
| Emma Myers | Natalie | A member of the group trying to find a way home |
| Danielle Brooks | Dawn | One of the four real-world misfits entering the Overworld |
| Jennifer Coolidge | Vice Principal Marlene | A supporting character from the real-world side of the story |
Jack Black as Steve
Steve is the clearest link between the game and the movie’s original ensemble. The official film synopsis describes him as an unexpected, expert crafter. When the newcomers arrive in the Overworld, Steve knows more about its rules, resources, dangers, and possibilities than they do.

- Each 3.25-inch scale Minecraft action figure comes with an accessory to recreate favorite in-game moments!

That makes him more than a recognizable name or costume. In the film, Steve functions as the group’s Minecraft-world guide while the others learn how crafting, exploration, hostile creatures, and the block-built environment work. Black’s casting also gives the character a distinct comic and dramatic presence that the game’s customizable player character does not have in the same way.
Jason Momoa as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison
Jason Momoa plays Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, one of the movie’s four central human protagonists. Garrett is among the outsiders pulled from the real world into the Overworld, where ordinary problems give way to a much larger survival adventure.
His character is part of the film’s group of misfits rather than a pre-existing Minecraft game character. The movie uses Garrett and the other newcomers to give the audience an entry point into the unfamiliar world.
Sebastian Hansen as Henry
Sebastian Hansen plays Henry. Henry is one of the siblings or family members at the center of the group transported through the mysterious portal. He is one of the four outsiders who must adapt to the Overworld and work with the others to get home.
Henry is also represented in the movie-inspired Minecraft content released alongside the film, where he appears among the five featured heroes with Steve, Garrett, Dawn, and Natalie.
Emma Myers as Natalie
Emma Myers plays Natalie, another member of the real-world group drawn into the Minecraft dimension. Like Henry, Garrett, and Dawn, Natalie has to learn how this strange environment works while helping the group survive and pursue a route home.

Natalie is also included in the official movie-inspired character content for Minecraft, alongside the other principal heroes.
Danielle Brooks as Dawn
Danielle Brooks plays Dawn. Dawn is the fourth member of the group of outsiders transported into the Overworld. Her role is tied to the film’s central group dynamic: four people from the real world must cooperate in a place governed by unfamiliar rules and populated by dangerous creatures.

Jennifer Coolidge as Vice Principal Marlene
Jennifer Coolidge plays Vice Principal Marlene. She is part of the supporting cast on the real-world side of the story. Unlike Steve, Garrett, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn, Vice Principal Marlene is not one of the five heroes featured in the movie-inspired Minecraft skin content.
Other credited roles
Rachel House voices Malgosha, a major piglin-associated antagonist or creature character involved in the film’s fantasy conflict. The full credits also list Allan Henry as a Malgosha creature performer and Bram Scott-Breheny as Young Steve.
These are useful details for a complete credit guide, but they belong in the supporting-cast section rather than beside the six most prominently marketed performers.

What happens to the characters?
The story begins with Garrett, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn dealing with ordinary real-world problems. A mysterious portal then transports them into the Overworld, a bizarre cubic landscape where creativity is essential to survival.
The newcomers must learn how to function in this environment while facing familiar Minecraft threats, including Piglins and zombies. Their goal is to find a way back home, but they cannot simply rely on their previous lives or assumptions about how the world works. Steve joins the group as the experienced crafter who can help them understand the Overworld.
The setup makes the movie a live-action fantasy adventure inspired by Minecraft, not a straightforward adaptation of a pre-existing game campaign. It uses recognizable elements—including the Overworld, crafting, portals, Piglins, zombies, and Steve—while creating a new group of human protagonists and an original quest.
Is movie Steve the same as game Steve?
He is the movie’s version of Steve, but the film does not define every possible version of Steve in Minecraft.

In the game, Steve is commonly recognized as the default-style player character. Players can control or customize a character, and Minecraft does not require one single story interpretation of Steve across every mode and world. A Minecraft Movie makes a different choice: it turns Steve into a conventional movie character with dialogue, a personality, a backstory, and a clearly defined function in the plot.
So the accurate description is that Jack Black plays the movie’s Steve. It would be too broad to claim that the film establishes the movie’s events as universal Minecraft game canon. The official movie material confirms Steve’s identity and his expert-crafter role, but it does not establish that the film’s story applies to every Minecraft world or game mode.

Official A Minecraft Movie merchandise
For readers who want a physical tie-in rather than another cast detail, the official Minecraft movie merchandise listing includes the LEGO Woodland Mansion Fighting Ring. It is a particularly natural match for the film because it connects the movie’s characters and Minecraft setting with a buildable play set.
The same official merchandise selection also lists an A Minecraft Movie Official Coloring Book, a Dennis the Wolf Plush, a Blast Attack Ghast Action Figure Set, movie character apparel, and Creeper-themed accessories. Retailer stock, prices, exact product listings, and availability can change, so those details should be checked before buying.
