Jenn Tran’s first night as the lead of The Bachelorette paired big, attention-grabbing entrances with the more personal conversations that helped her decide who stood out. She gave Sam M. the first impression rose and kissed him; seven men left at the first rose ceremony, and the 18 who remained headed to Melbourne.
Jenn’s first night as the Bachelorette
Season 21 began with Jenn Tran stepping into the lead role after appearing on Joey Graziadei’s season of The Bachelor. TVLine described her as excited to lead the franchise and identified her as its first Asian American lead. The premiere introduced the 25 men ABC had announced for her season.
First came the big entrances
Several arrivals were designed to make an impression. TVLine recapped Marcus talking about a near-death combat experience, Marvin speaking French, Sam N. joking that he was a “love virgin,” and Grant beatboxing. Sam M. joined Jenn for “shot o’clock,” Tomas A. arrived with puppies, Jonathon wore a hospital gown and bandages, and Hakeem brought balloons inspired by Up.
The entrances offered quick glimpses of personality, but the premiere also gave Jenn room for quieter connections. She bonded with Thomas N. over their Vietnamese family backgrounds and their mothers’ sacrifices. The group played Truth or Dare, and Jenn shared a brief basketball moment with Grant.

Why Jenn chose Sam M. for the first impression rose
Jenn gave the first impression rose to Sam M. and kissed him after presenting it. In a post-premiere interview with TheWrap on July 8, 2024, Jenn said she kept thinking about “someone who was going to make me feel comfortable” and with whom conversation felt easy. She said she followed her gut.
Jenn also explained that she takes physical intimacy seriously: she told TheWrap that it takes a lot for her to reach the point where she wants to kiss someone, because kissing is “one of the most intimate things you can do with somebody.” That helps explain why Sam M. was the only contestant she kissed on the first night, according to the premiere recap.
