Havoc draws on the Hong Kong action cinema Gareth Evans grew up admiring, with John Woo, Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung among his stated touchstones. Evans named six classics as reference points; of them, he made the clearest direct connection to Police Story, whose choreography shaped how he approached action staged across a location.
Which action classics did Gareth Evans cite?
Writer-director Gareth Evans told The Irish Times that 1980s and 1990s Hong Kong action cinema has long been his frame of reference: “I’ve always been a disciple of the John Woo school of film-making.” He also pointed to the martial-arts films of Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung.
In a verified Reddit AMA, Evans named these films as influences or reference points:
- Assault on Precinct 13
- Hard Boiled
- The Killer
- A Better Tomorrow
- Bullet in the Head
- Police Story
These titles place Havoc in conversation with action cinema Evans admires; the comments do not assign each classic to a particular scene in the newer film.

Why is Police Story the clearest connection?
Evans described seeing Jackie Chan’s Police Story as life-changing. He praised its choreography and connected its movement through a location to what he and his team were trying to achieve in Havoc: “following POVs throughout different parts of that location.” That makes Police Story the most specifically linked title in his comments—not a confirmed template for a particular Havoc sequence.
The distinction matters: Evans identified a choreographic idea, not a scene-by-scene blueprint. Viewers can look for how action uses space and viewpoint without assuming a direct recreation.

What does Hong Kong’s heroic-bloodshed tradition add?
The South China Morning Post frames Havoc as an ode to Hong Kong’s “heroic bloodshed” genre, describing Evans’s interest in its rhythms and movement. This is useful context for the film’s action lineage, rather than evidence that Havoc reproduces every convention of that genre.
The named influences also span different approaches to action: John Woo’s crime films and the martial-arts performance associated with Chan and Hung. Evans’s comments support reading the film against that broader tradition, but not reducing it to one influence or one style.
