Thamma has an appealing hook: a journalist rescued by a woman from an ancient vampire clan, with romance, horror-comedy and a place in the Maddock horror-comedy universe all in play. But the critical question is whether those ingredients come together as one story. Reviews from Mint, Scroll and India Today fault the film’s execution and franchise integration, while its Rotten Tomatoes audience score was higher than its critics’ score in the snapshot recorded on 8 October 2026.
What is Thamma about?
Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, Thamma is a 2025 Hindi-language film that mixes horror, comedy, fantasy, mystery/thriller and romance. Its story brings journalist Alok together with Tadaka, a woman from an ancient vampire clan. The Indonesian Film Censorship Institute describes the film as combining romance, mysticism and dark humor.
The premise gives the movie several promises to keep at once: a supernatural romance, vampire mythology, comic scares and a connection to the Maddock horror-comedy universe. Whether those strands support each other is more important than the novelty of the setup alone.
Do the romance, horror and comedy work together?
That is the central test for Thamma. Alok and Tadaka’s relationship needs enough development to make its supernatural stakes matter; the vampire mythology needs to feel distinctive rather than merely provide a premise; and the comedy and horror need to sharpen, not interrupt, one another. The critical concerns reported by several outlets suggest the film does not consistently make those elements add up to a satisfying whole.

Mint’s 21 October 2025 review describes the film as a cautious entry and criticizes its lack of bite. Scroll’s review takes issue with the direction and the use of the villain, framing the vampire comedy as lacking blood and bite. India Today calls it an ambitious but hollow addition to the Maddock horror-comedy universe. These are the outlets’ assessments, not a claim of universal agreement or a substitute for viewers’ own response.
Does it stand on its own as part of the Maddock universe?
A shared universe can reward returning viewers, but references work best when they grow out of the current story rather than compete with it. For Thamma, the useful question is whether its franchise ties enrich Alok and Tadaka’s conflict or make the film feel like a setup for something else. India Today’s criticism of the addition as hollow points to a concern about integration; Scroll’s criticism of the villain and direction points to problems within the film’s own dramatic machinery, too.

So the franchise connection is not, by itself, a reason to watch. Viewers primarily interested in the romance or vampire mythology may want those elements to carry the film independently of its place in a larger series.
What do critics and audiences say?
On 8 October 2026, Rotten Tomatoes showed a 36% Tomatometer based on 11 reviews and a 71% Popcornmeter based on 50+ verified ratings. The gap indicates that the audience rating was higher than the critics’ score in that snapshot; it does not establish why viewers responded differently, and both figures can change as ratings are added.

The available named reviews are notably critical, but they are not enough to claim that every critic or viewer agrees. If the combination of vampire lore, romance and broad horror-comedy appeals to you, the premise may still be worth trying; if you need those genres and the franchise story to mesh tightly, the cited reviews offer reason to temper expectations.
