Section 375 is a tense, dialogue-led courtroom thriller whose strongest question is not simply whether the accused is guilty, but how a legal defence can be mounted without letting the complainant disappear behind the arguments. Ajay Bahl’s 2019 film makes due process dramatically compelling; its attention to the accused’s position is also why its treatment of consent and power remains open to challenge.
What is Section 375 about?
Released on 13 September 2019, Section 375—also promoted as Section 375: Marzi Ya Zabardasti?—centres on filmmaker Rohan Khurana, accused of raping Anjali Dangle, a woman working on his film. The case becomes a courtroom contest between defence lawyer Tarun Saluja, played by Akshaye Khanna, and public prosecutor Hiral Gandhi, played by Richa Chadha. The premise turns a legal provision into a question about how evidence, power and credibility are argued in public. T-Series’ official trailer description announced the release date; Bollywood Hungama’s listing describes the central accusation.
Do the performances and courtroom contest work?
Khanna gives Saluja a controlled, calculating presence, making the defence case feel like a sustained exercise in testing assumptions rather than a simple declaration of innocence. Chadha’s Hiral is an effective counterweight: she brings conviction to the prosecution and gives the courtroom exchanges their friction. Their opposed approaches supply much of the film’s momentum, and the premise lets each argument change how the case appears.
That design has a cost. Anjali risks becoming the subject of competing speeches rather than the person whose experience should anchor the case. The film’s most consequential tension is therefore not just whether a legal argument is persuasive, but whose perspective the drama asks viewers to inhabit. Its suspense is real; so is the unease that the accused’s defence can become more vivid than the complainant’s interior life.

Does its legal drama feel convincing?
The film makes courtroom procedure legible as drama: evidence and advocacy create reversals, while the lawyers’ competing interpretations keep the case moving. That is not the same as demonstrating technical legal accuracy. The dialogue and proceedings are written for a thriller, and should be understood as dramatic choices rather than a reliable guide to courtroom practice or the law.
The title refers to the former Indian Penal Code’s Section 375, the statutory frame familiar at the time of the film’s 2019 release. India’s Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 took effect on 1 July 2024, and its Section 63 is titled “Rape.” That change in framework and numbering does not make the film a statement of current law; a section number alone also cannot establish every substantive legal difference. Is the film balanced about consent and power?
The film’s case for due process is dramatically strong, but that emphasis can leave its treatment of sexual violence feeling tilted toward the accused. A right to defend someone is not the same as a verdict on complainants as a class; still, a story that gives the defence the sharpest arguments risks inviting viewers to treat suspicion itself as proof. The film’s interest in abuse of power complicates that reading without entirely resolving it.
Critics have differed over whether its restraint and writing make the subject more thoughtful or whether the film should give greater space to those most affected. Rotten Tomatoes’ page, accessed in 2026, showed 58% from 12 critic reviews—a changing snapshot, not a definitive measure. Its excerpts include Firstpost critic Udita Jhunjhunwala’s favorable assessment of the writing and restrained tone, alongside Film Companion critic Sucharita Tyagi’s concern that a sensitive treatment should listen to and platform those most affected. Another Film Companion excerpt describes a balance between the survivor’s demonization and the perpetrator’s humanization while retaining an abuse-of-power narrative. Those contrasting readings capture the film’s central tension better than a claim of consensus.

Is Section 375 based on a true story?
The available film listings describe a fictional story with fictional characters built around a legal provision. They do not establish that the plot was based on a particular real case, so it is best approached as courtroom fiction rather than a documentary account.

Yes, if you value actor-led courtroom suspense and are willing to sit with an ethically uncomfortable point of view. Khanna and Chadha give the legal contest force, and the film raises questions about due process, consent and power that remain discussable after the verdict. It is less satisfying if you expect the complainant’s perspective to receive as much depth as the lawyers’ arguments. At the trailer launch, Chadha said, “This was a challenging role, I totally believe in my role and this film,” as reported by PTI and republished by India Today; that is her view of taking the part, not evidence of the film’s legal accuracy or its balance.
