Telly is a television offered at no upfront device price, built with a large main display and a smaller Smart Screen beneath it. The lower screen is designed to show ads and information while the main screen plays a show—or is idle. In exchange for the hardware, users accept an ad-supported, connected-TV arrangement with account and usage requirements. That makes Telly less like a conventional free television and more like a continuing value exchange between the company, advertisers and the household.
What is Telly?
Telly is a single television unit, not two separate TVs. Its large upper display handles normal viewing, while a smaller display below it—the Smart Screen—is intended for advertising, widgets and other information. A soundbar sits between the screens. Launch-era reporting also described hardware such as a camera, microphones, sensors, HDMI inputs, USB ports and an over-the-air tuner; confirm the specifications of the current model rather than assuming every feature is present on every set. The main display is for programs, streaming services, game consoles, set-top boxes and other connected devices. The Smart Screen is the unusual part: it is meant to remain a separate, visible surface for commercial and informational content, rather than functioning simply as a conventional status panel.

Why is the TV free?
Telly’s pitch is an ad-supported hardware model. The company describes the arrangement as a “value exchange”: it supplies the device without a stated purchase price, while the second screen gives advertisers a place to reach viewers at home. Telly’s advertising materials promote formats such as QR codes, tune-in links, shoppable ads and browser experiences.

So “free” refers to the advertised price of the television—not to an absence of costs or conditions. You still need to pay for broadband, electricity, any streaming subscriptions and any external equipment you use. You also agree to a connected, ad-supported product and to the applicable account and usage terms. Telly’s terms reserve the right to charge for premium services in the future, so check the terms presented at signup rather than treating the launch-era offer as a guarantee that every related service will always be free.
What appears on the second screen?
Telly describes the Smart Screen as a place for advertising as well as information such as news, weather, sports scores and widgets. Advertiser materials describe interactive campaigns, including QR codes that can send viewers to a mobile page, tune-in prompts and shoppable experiences. The lower display is therefore not only a convenience feature: it is the mechanism that makes Telly’s advertising model visible in the living room.
The exact mix of ads, widgets and partners can change with software, market, campaigns and company policy. Telly’s advertising page is a description of what the company offers advertisers, not independent verification of audience-measurement accuracy or campaign results.

Launch-era coverage described advertising on the Smart Screen even when the main display was not in use. That persistent commercial presence is central to the design. Do not assume that the lower display can be permanently turned off, or that doing so would preserve the service, unless current device settings and support documentation say so. Ask Telly directly whether it can be dimmed or paused, what happens when the main display is off, and whether disabling it affects eligibility or service.
What does Telly ask of its users?
The public Terms of Service reviewed for this article are dated May 15, 2023. They state that users must create an account, provide registration information, keep the TV connected to Wi-Fi and the internet, use it as the household’s primary television, and not use advertising-blocking software on their Wi-Fi network. The terms also say a valid credit card is required before shipment and must remain current. Telly’s stated availability in those terms is limited to the United States.
The terms say the device may need to be returned if a user stops using the service or does not meet the requirements. If Telly determines a user has failed to comply—including by keeping the set disconnected for more than short periods each month—the company says it may end service and require the TV’s return. It may charge the card on file if the product is not returned. The terms do not give a precise number of permitted offline days, so do not infer one. A brief router restart is different from prolonged disconnection or deliberately blocking advertising traffic, but the contract’s exact application is a question for Telly.

These conditions matter if you expect to use the set as a spare-room TV, take it offline, modify it, attach unapproved peripherals or resell it. The primary-TV requirement means you should not assume that accepting the offer for a guest room while using another television as your household’s main set is permitted. Check the current signup terms for the consequences of cancellation, return shipping, transfer, damage and service discontinuation.

A television with network connectivity, advertising and interactive features raises questions about viewing activity, ad interactions and household measurement. Telly’s advertiser materials claim people-sensing capabilities and audience targeting based on more than 120 declared household attributes. Those are the company’s commercial claims, not independently verified findings.
Launch-era specifications also included a camera, microphones and sensors. Before agreeing to the offer, look for current instructions on whether the camera can be covered, microphones muted and sensors disabled—and whether those choices affect the TV’s functions or service. Ask what information is collected from streaming activity and HDMI-connected devices, whether data is linked to an account or household, how to exercise privacy choices or delete an account, and whether returning the set removes stored information.

The terms reviewed say Telly does not knowingly collect or solicit personally identifiable information from children under 13 and say the product may detect a child’s physical presence without collecting personal information about children. That is Telly’s statement, not an independent privacy audit, and it does not answer every question about cameras, sensors or household viewing data. The product privacy policy and Telly Help Center are the places to check for current detail; if a question is not answered there, ask the company before signing up. The public policy material reviewed for this article did not establish answers to all of the questions above.

Telly was designed to support ordinary TV use, including streaming, HDMI devices, consoles, set-top boxes and over-the-air television. You can connect an external streaming player, but that does not necessarily remove Telly’s own account, internet, advertising or other contractual requirements. The terms say internet and Wi-Fi are required for functionality; do not count on a fully usable offline TV without confirmation from current support documentation.

App availability, refresh rate, mounting options, warranty coverage, repair service and what happens if Telly ends the service are practical product questions that the public materials reviewed here do not settle. Confirm the details that matter for your setup before accepting a shipment.

Is Telly still available?
As of August 18, 2026, Telly’s official website still presents the television as free and directs visitors toward a “Pre-order Your Telly” flow. That does not establish current inventory, delivery times, guaranteed fulfillment or availability outside the United States. The terms reviewed describe a waitlist and say joining it does not guarantee that an applicant will receive a set. Confirm the offer, eligibility, charges and expected delivery through the current signup flow or Telly support.
The 500,000-unit giveaway discussed in launch-era coverage was a 2023 plan, not evidence of how many TVs are available now.
Who might want one—and who might not
Telly may suit someone who needs a large television, has a limited upfront budget, accepts an always-present advertising surface and is comfortable keeping a connected TV online. The lower display’s sports, weather or news information may appeal to people who want ambient updates, and some viewers may find the interactive ad formats useful.
It is a poor fit if you want an uncluttered screen, object to persistent advertising in the living room, have concerns about cameras or data collection, need a TV that works fully offline, or do not want to accept a primary-TV requirement, account, card and possible return obligation. Unreliable broadband is also a concern: it can interrupt smart functions and make it harder to satisfy the stated connectivity terms.
Before you sign up
- Is the offer open to new applicants in your location, and is the device still offered at no charge?
- Does checkout add shipping, a deposit or other charges? Is a credit card required, and under what circumstances could it be charged?
- What are the current delivery estimate, return process and shipping responsibility if you must send the TV back?
- Can the Smart Screen be dimmed or paused? Can it be disabled without losing service?
- Can you cover the camera, mute the microphones or disable sensors, and what functions would that affect?
- What data is collected from viewing, ad interactions, streaming services and HDMI inputs? How can you change privacy choices or delete the account?
- Does the TV support the apps, inputs, refresh rate and mounting setup you need?
- What warranty, damaged-delivery, repair and replacement support applies today?
- What happens to your account and information if you return the TV or Telly stops providing the service?
Get answers from the current terms, privacy policy and support team before accepting a set. A no-price hardware offer is only useful if the ongoing conditions fit your household.
