TechCrunch Minute: Spotify’s Move to Paywall Lyrics Put Pressure on Free Users—but the Paywall Wasn’t Permanent

Spotify tested limiting lyrics for Free users in 2023 and 2024, then expanded Free access after complaints. Here is what changed, what the reported three-song limit really meant, and how Free and Premium lyrics access differs now.

TechCrunch Minute: Spotify’s move to paywall lyrics is putting pressure on free users, but Spotify did not keep a permanent general lyrics paywall. After testing limits for some Free accounts in 2023 and May 2024, Spotify expanded Free lyrics access on July 30, 2024; Premium now adds offline lyrics.

The episode captured a short-lived but revealing product experiment. Spotify tried to make a familiar listening feature do more subscription-conversion work, faced complaints when Free users experienced lyrics as a loss, and later settled on a narrower Premium advantage.

Key takeaways

  • Spotify tested limiting lyrics for some Free users in 2023 and broadened the restriction in May 2024, but the rollout was inconsistent across accounts and markets.
  • Reports in May 2024 described a three-song monthly limit or an upgrade prompt for some Free users, not a universal limit imposed on every Free account.
  • Spotify expanded lyrics access for Free users on July 30, 2024, after complaints, although the company did not publish a precise replacement limit.
  • Spotify’s current support documentation says lyrics are available to both Free and Premium users, subject to song, device, market, and rights-holder availability.
  • Premium’s clearer lyrics advantage is offline lyrics for downloaded tracks, while translations and lyric previews are available to Free and Premium users where supported.

What was TechCrunch Minute reporting about Spotify’s lyrics paywall?

TechCrunch Minute: Spotify’s move to paywall lyrics is putting pressure on free users described Spotify’s attempt to turn song lyrics into a Premium conversion lever. The May 3, 2024 episode came after reports that some Free users were seeing monthly limits or prompts to upgrade before viewing lyrics. The experiment made Spotify Free feel more restricted rather than making Premium feel substantially more valuable. TechCrunch’s May 2024 report framed the change as pressure on Spotify’s free audience.

The important current correction is that Spotify did not permanently put all lyrics behind a paywall. Spotify expanded lyrics availability for Free users on July 30, 2024, and Spotify’s current product documentation says lyrics are available on both Free and Premium tiers. Premium users now have a more defensible additional feature: offline lyrics for downloaded tracks, alongside other lyrics upgrades announced in 2026.

When did Spotify restrict lyrics for Free users?

Spotify’s lyrics restriction developed in stages rather than arriving as one universal worldwide policy.

Date What happened Who was affected
November 18, 2021 Spotify announced synchronized lyrics globally for Free and Premium users on major supported platforms. Free and Premium users, where the feature was supported
September 2023 Spotify began testing Premium-only or limited lyrics access. Some Free accounts; tests varied by user and market
May 2–3, 2024 Reports described broader limits, including an upgrade prompt and a reported three-song monthly limit. Some Free users; the rollout was not uniform
July 30, 2024 Spotify expanded lyrics access for Free users after complaints. Free users globally, subject to Spotify’s normal availability qualifications
February 4, 2026 Spotify announced worldwide lyric translations, offline lyrics for Premium, and lyric previews on mobile and tablet. Free and Premium users, with offline lyrics reserved for Premium
August 2026 Spotify’s support documentation states that lyrics are available on both Free and Premium. Both tiers, where song, device, market, and rights conditions permit

Spotify had already established lyrics as a broad feature. In its November 2021 lyrics announcement, Spotify said synchronized lyrics were available globally to both Free and Premium listeners across major supported platforms. That history explains why the 2023 and 2024 tests felt like a feature removal to affected users.

Did Spotify put lyrics permanently behind a paywall?

No. Spotify’s current documentation says Free and Premium users can access lyrics. Spotify expanded access for Free users in July 2024, then kept Premium differentiation through offline lyrics rather than maintaining a general paywall. Availability is not guaranteed for every song or device: Spotify says lyrics can vary by market, device, song, and rights-holder agreement. Spotify’s current lyrics support page is the best source for checking the present policy.

That distinction matters because “Spotify paywalled lyrics” is an accurate description of the 2024 experiment for some users, but it is not an accurate description of Spotify’s current general lyrics policy. The more precise summary is: Spotify tested a broad restriction, responded to complaints by expanding Free access, and retained offline lyrics as a Premium feature.

Was every Free user limited to three songs per month?

No. The reported three-song monthly limit was not confirmed as a universal rule for every Free user worldwide. Contemporary reports described different experiences across accounts and markets, and Spotify did not disclose a single global replacement limit when it expanded access in July 2024.

Some users encountered a message requiring an upgrade after viewing a limited number of lyrics, while others reported different restrictions or no restriction. The safe historical wording is that Spotify tested and broadened lyrics limits for some Free users; the unsafe wording is that every Free user received exactly three lyrics views per month.

Why did Spotify test a lyrics paywall?

Spotify appears to have tested lyrics as a way to convert Free listeners into Premium subscribers. The conversion rationale comes from the product context and contemporaneous reporting, not from a public Spotify statement showing that the lyrics test generated a particular number of upgrades. TechCrunch’s coverage explicitly connected the restriction with pressure to convert Free users.

Lyrics are a visible feature used during active listening. A prompt appearing when someone wants to follow a song can create a repeated opportunity to advertise Premium. The risk is that lyrics are also easy to understand as a basic listening function. Adding offline lyrics as a Premium benefit is a conventional upgrade proposition; removing ordinary lyrics from a previously accessible Free experience can make the Free tier feel deliberately degraded.

The second point is an editorial interpretation of the product strategy, not a quantified Spotify finding. The available sources establish the restriction, user complaints, and later expansion, but they do not establish that Spotify lost users, lost advertising revenue, or reversed the policy because of a measured churn event.

How large was the Free-to-Premium conversion opportunity?

Spotify’s audience was large enough that even a small conversion effect could have mattered, but Spotify’s reported business figures do not prove that the lyrics test succeeded.

According to Spotify’s Q2 2024 earnings announcement, Spotify reported 626 million monthly active users, 246 million subscribers, €3.8 billion in quarterly revenue, a 29.2% gross margin, and €266 million in operating income for the quarter. Those figures show the scale of Spotify’s ad-supported funnel and subscription business. They do not provide a conversion rate or financial return for the lyrics restriction itself.

Question What the evidence supports What the evidence does not support
Did Spotify test a restriction? Yes, for some Free users from 2023, with broader reports in May 2024. That every Free user received the same restriction.
Was conversion the apparent goal? Contemporaneous reporting framed the change as an effort to move Free users toward Premium. A verified conversion rate from the test.
Did complaints matter? Spotify expanded Free lyrics access after complaints in July 2024. Proof that complaints caused a measured loss of users or revenue.
Are lyrics still Premium-only? No. Spotify says lyrics are available on Free and Premium. Unlimited lyrics availability for every song, market, and device.

What is the difference between Spotify Free and Premium lyrics access now?

Free and Premium users can generally access lyrics, translations, and lyric previews where supported; Premium users additionally receive offline lyrics when the relevant downloaded content is available for offline listening. Spotify announced the current upgrade split in its February 2026 lyrics update.

Lyric previews Rolling out globally on mobile and tablet Rolling out globally on mobile and tablet
Offline lyrics Not the Premium offline feature described by Spotify Rolling out for Premium users with downloaded tracks available offline
Availability guarantees None for every song, device, or market None for every song, device, or market

Premium therefore remains relevant for listeners who need lyrics without an internet connection, rather than for listeners who simply want to display lyrics during ordinary online playback. A reader should not upgrade solely on the assumption that Premium is required to see all lyrics.

What should users do if Spotify lyrics are missing?

Missing lyrics do not necessarily mean that Spotify has placed the song behind a Premium restriction. Spotify identifies several possible limits, including the particular song, device, market, technical availability, and rights-holder agreements.

  1. Check the account tier and connection. Confirm whether the account is Free or Premium and whether the device is online. Offline lyrics are specifically associated with the Premium upgrade.
  2. Try another supported device. Lyrics availability can vary by device, so a missing lyrics panel on one device does not prove a general account paywall.
  3. Try another song. Rights-holder or catalog limitations can affect an individual track.
  4. Check Spotify’s support documentation. The official View lyrics help page reflects Spotify’s current availability qualifications.
  5. Do not assume an upgrade prompt proves a permanent policy. Spotify has previously tested account-level restrictions and later expanded Free access.

Did Spotify reverse the lyrics paywall because it lost users or ad revenue?

The available research does not establish that Spotify reversed the restriction because of measured user losses or reduced advertising revenue. Spotify expanded lyrics access after complaints, but the sources do not publish a causal churn, engagement, ad-sales, or conversion metric tied to the experiment.

And you can track down your AirPods and Charging Case with the Find My app.*

The defensible conclusion is narrower: the broad restriction created enough user resistance to be softened, while Spotify preserved a Premium distinction through offline lyrics. That outcome suggests a product adjustment, not proof of a specific financial failure.

What does the experiment say about Spotify’s Free tier?

The lyrics episode illustrates the difficult boundary between a useful Free tier and a compelling Premium tier. Spotify needs Free listening to support discovery, advertising, and habit formation, while Premium needs benefits that justify recurring payment. Lyrics sit between those goals because they are both an engaging part of listening and a feature users may regard as basic.

Restricting lyrics can make Premium appear more valuable, but it can also make Spotify Free feel worse without making Premium feel proportionally better. Spotify’s eventual approach was more coherent: ordinary lyrics remained available to both tiers, while offline lyrics became a meaningful Premium capability for listeners who download music.

Can you still buy a Spotify Premium gift card?

Spotify’s U.S. support documentation says Spotify gift cards are no longer available for purchase. Previously purchased cards may remain redeemable under Spotify’s restrictions, but readers should not assume that a marketplace listing is current, authorized, or valid in their country. Spotify’s U.S. gift-card support page should be checked before buying or recommending one.

Because gift-card availability is geographically and temporally sensitive, a gift card is not a safe general workaround for the old lyrics restriction. The current policy does not require Premium for ordinary lyrics in the first place.
