SZA’s original SOS, released December 9, 2022, is a 23-song, 1-hour-8-minute album that keeps the intimate relationship writing of Ctrl but refuses to stay in one musical lane. It moves through R&B, rap, acoustic balladry and pop-punk, making its scale both its central pleasure and its main risk: the range can feel exhilarating, but the long sequence can also lose focus.
What is SZA’s SOS album about?
SOS circles unstable attachment: hurt and desire, resentment and regret, the wish to protect oneself and the fear of being alone. Its narrator can sound defiant one moment and exposed the next. That tension gives the album more emotional complexity than a simple story of getting over someone; self-assertion and uncertainty coexist rather than resolving neatly.
Apple Music’s editorial description frames the record as continuing Ctrl’s relationship concerns from a more self-assured position, while still acknowledging setbacks and poor romantic decisions. It also characterizes the album as moving through the discomfort of healing. That is a useful reading of the sequence, not an artist statement about what every song means.
How does SOS compare with Ctrl?
Ctrl feels more tightly unified; SOS is longer and more willing to change shape. TIME’s Andrew R. Chow and Moises Mendez describe its palette as spanning trap, pop-punk, boom-bap, indie power ballads and soul samples. Rather than treating that variety as proof of growth on its own, the useful comparison is what it does to the listening experience: SOS makes room for more moods, but gives the listener fewer stretches of one consistent sound.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The shift is also emotional. SZA often sounds more willing to state her independence, yet the writing keeps returning to vulnerability and attachment. The result is not a clean break from Ctrl so much as a broader, less settled version of its relationship preoccupations.
What does the album sound like?
The contrast between close-up confession and larger stylistic gestures is one of the record’s defining features. Many songs lean on intimate, mid-tempo R&B; elsewhere SZA turns toward rap, guitar-driven balladry and punk-colored hooks. Pitchfork, for example, describes “F2F” as an unusual country song with a pop-punk chorus, and points to the rap approach on “Smokin on my Ex Pack.” These shifts make the album feel exploratory rather than like a single genre exercise.

The guest appearances add different textures, though a feature does not guarantee a perfect fit. Sony Music Canada’s official release notice credits Travis Scott, Don Toliver, Phoebe Bridgers and Ol’ Dirty Bastard, alongside producers including ThankGod4Cody, Carter Lang, Jeff Bhasker, Rob Bisel, Benny Blanco, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Emile Haynie, Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins and Jay Versace. Pitchfork finds that “Ghost in the Machine” does not fully land; that is one critic’s judgment, and it illustrates the trade-off of an album willing to take conspicuous turns.
What are the best songs on SOS?
There is no need to treat “best” as a single ranking: a few tracks show how much emotional and sonic ground the album covers. These are useful entry points, not an objective top tier.

- “Kill Bill” puts resentment and darkly comic revenge fantasy in a sleek, memorable pop frame.
- “Snooze” is a strong example of the intimate, mid-tempo material that Pitchfork praises.
- “F2F” makes one of the album’s sharpest stylistic pivots, joining country inflection to a pop-punk chorus, as Pitchfork notes.
- “Ghost in the Machine” offers a feature-driven contrast to the more inward songs; Pitchfork considers the collaboration less successful.
- “Nobody Gets Me” foregrounds acoustic balladry and relationship vulnerability.
- “Conceited” gives the record a more self-assured, swaggering counterpoint.
Does the 23-song length work?
It depends on whether the listener values range more than tight pacing. TIME’s two writers capture the divide: one responds to the album’s creative energy, while the other finds the 23-song collection oversaturated. Both reactions make sense. The shifts between intimate ballads and louder genre changes can keep the emotional world in motion, but the sheer number of tracks can also make the album feel less concentrated than Ctrl.
That unevenness is not simply a matter of one weak song or one stylistic experiment. It is the cost of a sequence that keeps changing its center of gravity. Listeners who enjoy following SZA into contrasting moods may find the sprawl expressive; those looking for a focused, tightly sequenced album may prefer the more unified approach of her debut.

Is SOS worth listening to?
Yes, especially if you want an album that treats emotional contradiction as part of its subject rather than a problem to tidy away. SOS is not as focused as Ctrl, and its length makes some of its experiments feel less essential than others. But its best moments—whether the intimate pull of “Snooze,” the guitar-led vulnerability of “Nobody Gets Me,” or the jolt of “F2F”—show an artist willing to let a relationship album take unfamiliar routes.
