Susan Lorincz shot and killed her neighbor, Ajike “AJ” Owens, in the Quail Run community near Ocala, Florida, on June 2, 2023. A jury found Lorincz guilty of manslaughter by use of a firearm in August 2024, rejecting her claim of self-defense; in November, she was sentenced to 25 years in state prison. The case grew out of a dispute involving neighbors’ children, but accounts of the confrontation differ. Here is what the official record and trial reporting establish—and what remains a matter of competing testimony.
What happened on June 2, 2023?
Ajike “AJ” Owens was killed outside Lorincz’s apartment in the Quail Run community in Marion County, near Ocala. According to the State Attorney’s Office, deputies were initially responding to a call about juveniles trespassing on private property. While they were on their way, dispatch received a report of gunfire. Deputies found Owens in the yard in front of Lorincz’s apartment with a gunshot wound to her upper right chest. The office said Lorincz shot Owens through a door.
The details leading up to the shooting were disputed. Prosecutors said Owens went to Lorincz’s home after her children complained that Lorincz had thrown roller skates and an umbrella at them. Lorincz denied throwing the objects. Associated Press reporting on the trial and sentencing says Owens was pounding on the door and yelling. Those accounts describe the parties’ positions and testimony; they should not be treated as undisputed findings about every moment of the encounter.
What charges did Lorincz face, and why was it manslaughter rather than murder?
On June 26, 2023, the State Attorney’s Office announced one count of manslaughter with a firearm and one count of assault. The office said it considered second-degree murder but concluded the evidence available at that point did not establish an element it believed prosecutors had to prove: that the killing was done with a “depraved mind” toward the victim.

The office described that element as requiring evidence of hatred, spite, ill will or evil intent. It said that aiming a gun at the door and pulling the trigger, by themselves, did not prove the required state of mind beyond a reasonable doubt. State Attorney William “Bill” Gladson summarized the decision: “As deplorable as the defendant’s actions were in this case, there is insufficient evidence to prove this specific and required element of second degree murder.” This was the prosecutor’s explanation for the charge filed, not a ruling that no other charge could ever have been brought.
The same statement explained why the office did not file several misdemeanor counts related to the children. Based on its account of sworn child-witness testimony, the office said the skate did not hit the child and a child was not in fear; it also said there was no evidence Lorincz knew a child was with Owens when she fired. Those points reflect the prosecution’s stated assessment of the evidence.

Was Susan Lorincz found guilty, and was it self-defense?
Yes. After a week-long trial, a jury found Lorincz guilty of manslaughter by use of a firearm on August 16, 2024. The State Attorney’s Office reported that more than 30 witnesses testified. Lorincz had told detectives that she feared for her life and claimed self-defense. The jury’s guilty verdict rejected that defense.
The conviction was for manslaughter by use of a firearm—not murder. The verdict announcement said the first-degree felony carried a maximum possible sentence of 30 years. That was the stated maximum, not the punishment ultimately imposed.

What sentence did Lorincz receive?
On November 25, 2024, Lorincz was sentenced to 25 years in the Florida Department of Corrections. The sentencing announcement from the State Attorney’s Office confirmed the term. Associated Press reported that Circuit Judge Robert Hodges called the shooting “completely unnecessary” and said, “The shooting, I find, was based more in anger than in fear.” These were the judge’s remarks at sentencing.
AP also reported that Lorincz apologized in court and said, “I never intended to kill anyone.” Pamela Dias, Owens’s mother, spoke about the family’s loss; AP reported that she had become the children’s sole caregiver.

Who was AJ Owens?
Owens was a mother of four. The State Attorney’s Office said her killing left four young children without their mother. Gladson described the loss as one the children would feel for the rest of their lives. The case therefore ended not only in a criminal conviction and prison sentence, but also in the loss of a parent for four children.

What is established—and what should be treated carefully?
- Established: Owens was killed on June 2, 2023, outside Lorincz’s apartment in Quail Run; Lorincz was charged with manslaughter with a firearm and assault; a jury convicted her of manslaughter by use of a firearm; and she received a 25-year sentence.
- Disputed accounts: The claims about objects thrown at the children and the exact circumstances of Owens’s arrival at Lorincz’s door come from accounts presented in the case. Lorincz denied throwing the objects and said she feared for her life.
