Compare the laptop’s measured electricity use, a fair share of its purchase cost, and any incremental internet or reliability costs with the VPS’s compute charge plus outbound bandwidth and other fees. The result also depends on whether your setup must encode video in real time or can send a pre-encoded file.
Start with the workload: encode video or send a finished stream
A computer or server that encodes video live has a different job from one that sends a pre-encoded file. Real-time encoding takes processing capacity; do not assume a low-cost VPS can handle it just because it can transmit a stream. If your source is already encoded, the device may only need to send it, but you still need to confirm the software, format, storage, and network setup work together.
YouTube supports software encoders running on computers as well as hardware encoders. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and AAC or MP3 audio. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3–8 Mbps for 720p30. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Test the actual source, audio, and stream configuration before relying on a continuous broadcast.

Calculate the laptop’s full monthly cost
For a 30-day month, a device running continuously uses approximately average watts × 0.72 kilowatt-hours. Multiply that figure by your local electricity price per kWh. This is a calculation, not a published measurement of a typical laptop: measure the complete setup at the wall with a plug-in electricity monitor rather than treating the laptop’s processor rating or power-adapter rating as its actual draw.
Then add a reasonable monthly share of the used laptop’s purchase price and any costs that are incremental to keeping this setup online, such as additional internet service or reliability measures. For example, if you expect to use the laptop for 36 months for this purpose, one simple purchase-cost allocation is its purchase price divided by 36. That is an accounting assumption, not a claim about the laptop’s useful life.
Calculation
Monthly laptop cost = (measured average watts × 0.72 × local electricity price per kWh) + monthly purchase-cost share + incremental internet/reliability costs

Calculate the VPS bill, including transfer
DigitalOcean’s current Basic Droplet list prices are $4/month with 500 GiB of transfer, $6/month with 1,000 GiB, and $12/month with 2,000 GiB. Its listed additional outbound transfer rate is $0.01/GiB. These are provider prices and allowances, not evidence that any particular plan can encode your stream. Confirm current prices, transfer accounting, and applicable terms on DigitalOcean Droplet pricing and its bandwidth billing documentation before choosing a plan.

For a 30-day month, estimate the stream’s outbound data with this formula, before protocol overhead:
Mbps × 1,000,000 bits/second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8 = decimal bytes transferred

A continuous 5 Mbps stream works out to about 1.62 TB decimal, or 1.47 TiB, in 30 days. At 6 Mbps, it is about 1.94 TB decimal, or 1.76 TiB. Decimal TB and binary TiB/GiB are different units, so compare like with like when checking an allowance. Actual transfer can be higher once protocol overhead is included.
At 5 Mbps, the estimated monthly transfer is above a 500 GiB allowance and below 2,000 GiB, before overhead. Under DigitalOcean’s listed terms, overage beyond the included transfer is therefore material for some plans. The full VPS estimate should include compute, any outbound overage, storage, and other charges relevant to your setup—not just the advertised compute price.

Compare both options on the same basis
Use one 30-day period and the same currency for both options. Substitute your measured wattage, local electricity rate, laptop purchase price, expected allocation period, target bitrate, and chosen provider plan; there is no reliable universal laptop-versus-VPS verdict without those inputs.

The laptop’s break-even comparison is its monthly electricity, purchase-cost share, and incremental costs versus the VPS’s complete monthly bill. A laptop you already own may look cheaper if you omit purchase allocation, but that does not show the full cost of acquiring a suitable machine. Conversely, a VPS’s low compute price does not represent the full cost if the stream exceeds included transfer.
Check whether each setup can stay live reliably
- Home upload: Confirm that sustained upload capacity covers the stream bitrate plus headroom for overhead and other household use.
- Power and connection interruptions: Consider what happens if the home loses power or internet, and include any incremental recovery or reliability costs in the laptop estimate.
- Encoding capacity: If live encoding is required, verify performance with the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. A provider’s compute price alone does not prove capacity.
- Maintenance: Factor in whether you are comfortable maintaining a continuously running computer or administering a server.
- Broadcast plan: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Account for this limit when planning a continuous broadcast; do not assume a single uninterrupted stream will be archived beyond it. See YouTube’s live stream archiving guidance.
- Rights and channel eligibility: Use content you have the rights to stream and check YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies, including rules relevant to reused content. A continuous playlist does not remove copyright or channel-policy obligations.

Which option is cheaper for you?
- A used laptop can cost less if its measured electricity cost and fair purchase-cost share are lower than a VPS’s compute, transfer, and other relevant charges—and if its encoding and home-network performance meet your needs.
- A VPS can cost less when its complete monthly bill, including transfer, compares favorably with the laptop’s electricity, allocated purchase cost, and incremental home costs, and the selected plan can do the required workload.
- A hosted service may suit you better if you want cloud playback without maintaining a home computer or general-purpose server. Compare its current plan limits and terms with your requirements rather than treating it as a like-for-like VPS quote.
For a useful decision, measure the laptop at the wall, estimate transfer from your actual bitrate, and compare full 30-day totals. Recheck provider terms and YouTube guidance before committing; both prices and technical recommendations can change.
