The key question is whether the cloud sends one stream to YouTube or delivers a separate playback feed directly to every viewer. Google Cloud lists VM data transfer to YouTube as “No charge” under its named product-transfer rule. That does not make cloud compute free, and it does not mean viewer delivery from a cloud server or CDN is free. For a fair comparison, count the actual delivery path, cloud runtime and services, or the PC’s measured electricity use.
First identify who delivers the video to viewers
A 24/7 stream can follow different paths. The cost implications change substantially depending on which one you use:

YouTube says it transcodes live streams into different output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. As a result, the encoder’s ingest bitrate is not a direct measure of the bytes YouTube sends to each viewer. A cloud-to-YouTube ingest feed and cloud-to-viewer delivery are different workloads.
Estimate the PC’s electricity cost from a measurement
There is no single defensible monthly PC cost without knowing the computer’s average power draw and the electricity tariff. Measure the PC while it is doing the work you plan to run, then use:

PC electricity cost = average watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours × electricity price per kWh
Use the actual billing interval: 24/7 operation is 720 hours in a 30-day month or 744 hours in a 31-day month. A plug-in power meter or other suitable meter can provide the average draw; measure during the real streaming workload rather than treating the stream bitrate as a proxy for PC power. Keep electricity separate from internet-plan costs and any equipment purchase or depreciation you elect to include.

Estimate cloud delivery only if the cloud serves viewers
For a direct-to-viewer stream, a useful first-pass estimate of decimal gigabytes is:
viewer-data GB ≈ bitrate Mbps × concurrent viewers × hours × 0.45

This approximation converts megabits per second over the stated hours into decimal gigabytes. For an invoice-grade estimate, use the provider’s unit conventions and billable-byte rules, then apply the actual destination, region, usage tiers, included allowances, and CDN or origin charges. Viewer count and bitrate matter because each concurrent playback stream contributes to the total.
For example, 1 Mbps delivered continuously to one viewer for one hour is approximately 0.45 decimal GB by this approximation. Multiply for the number of concurrent viewers and hours before applying the relevant provider’s rates. This is a traffic estimate, not a price quote.

Published provider examples are not universal rates
- Google Cloud’s pricing page, accessed in 2026, lists Premium Tier internet transfer to North America at $0.12/GiB in the 1–1,024 GiB monthly tier, after the first 1 GiB per account free tier. The same page lists $0.11/GiB and $0.08/GiB at higher monthly usage tiers. These figures apply to the stated destination, tier, and pricing page—not to every cloud provider or traffic route.
- Amazon Web Services’ Live Streaming on AWS guide, accessed in 2026, illustrates CloudFront viewer egress at $0.085/GB. Its example assumes 1,000 viewers at 1.8 Mbps each, or 791 GB/hour, and calculates $67.24/hour. AWS describes the example as assuming all viewers receive the highest bitrate, so treat it as an upper-range illustration under those assumptions, not a forecast for every event.
- AWS’s CloudFront flat-rate pricing page, accessed in 2026, lists a default Premium plan example with a 50 TB monthly transfer allowance for $1,000/month. Check the current plan terms, availability, and workload eligibility before comparing it with usage-based delivery; an allowance does not establish that every workload is covered at that price.
Do not apply Google Cloud’s VM-to-YouTube no-charge entry to AWS, another provider, an ISP connection, or a cloud service that sends playback directly to viewers. Nor does that entry establish that running a YouTube channel has no other costs.

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists recommended ingest rates for 1080p at 30 frames per second of 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264. Those are encoder-to-YouTube recommendations, not a promise that each viewer receives that exact bitrate. YouTube transcodes streams into multiple output formats. Separately, YouTube’s system-requirements page, accessed in 2026, recommends sustained playback connection speeds of 5 Mbps for 1080p and 20 Mbps for 4K UHD; these are playback connection recommendations, not guaranteed encoded bitrates.

For direct-to-viewer cloud delivery, use the bitrate actually delivered to viewers, accounting for rendition mix if known. If you only know the encoder’s ingest setting, do not assume that it equals every viewer’s playback rate.
Build a like-for-like monthly comparison
- Write down the architecture. Mark whether the PC or VM sends an ingest feed to YouTube, or whether a cloud server/CDN serves playback directly to viewers.
- Define the operating period. Use the actual billing interval and planned hours; a calendar month may be 720 or 744 hours for uninterrupted operation.
- For the PC case, measure average watts. Multiply watts divided by 1,000 by operating hours and your local electricity price per kWh.
- For cloud-to-YouTube ingest, price the compute and services. Apply the provider’s current VM and any storage, packaging, or other service charges. Use Google’s no-charge transfer rule only if the traffic and product match its stated VM-to-YouTube case.
- For direct viewer delivery, estimate traffic. Multiply delivered bitrate, concurrent viewers, and hours using the approximation above, then price that volume against the actual region, destination, tier, allowance, and CDN plan.
- Keep unlike costs visible. Separate electricity, internet service, equipment, cloud compute, storage, and viewer egress so you can see which assumptions drive the result.
A universal break-even dollar amount or viewer count cannot be calculated from the published examples alone. It depends on actual PC draw and tariff, cloud provider and region, concurrent audience, playback bitrate mix, runtime, plan allowances, and which system serves viewers.
When a cloud egress bill can dominate
If a cloud VM sends one feed to YouTube, viewer traffic is not the VM’s direct-to-viewer egress workload. If a cloud server or CDN serves playback itself, delivery volume scales with bitrate, audience concurrency, and time. That is why a continuous direct-to-viewer service can accumulate substantial transfer charges even when the encoder’s own feed is modest. The AWS example above shows the effect at 1,000 concurrent viewers under its stated high-bitrate assumption; it should not be generalized to a different provider, audience, region, or rendition mix.
