There is no universal monthly-cost winner. For a Ryzen mini PC, calculate electricity from its measured wall draw and your tariff; for a rented server, add its current rent and any outbound-data overage. Then compare whether each setup can sustain your chosen stream and how much administration and outage recovery you are prepared to handle.
Calculate the mini PC’s monthly electricity
Measure the whole computer at the wall while it is running the stream workload you actually intend to use. A processor’s rated power or an idle reading is not a substitute. A plug-in electricity usage monitor can provide the wall-draw input; no particular model is required.
For a billing period of H hours, measured whole-system draw of W watts, and electricity tariff of T per kilowatt-hour:
Electricity cost = (W ÷ 1,000) × H × T.
For a 30-day month, use 720 hours. Enter your local tariff and your own meter reading; electricity prices and hardware draw vary. Include a router, display, backup power, hardware purchase allocation, internet charges, or maintenance only when they are incremental costs you want to assign to the stream.

Monthly GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 324.
This converts bits to bytes over 30 days. It excludes protocol overhead, restarts, and unrelated server traffic. For illustration, a constant 6 Mbps stream sends about 1.94 TB; at 10 Mbps it sends about 3.24 TB. Actual billing depends on the hosting provider’s accounting and plan terms.
Check the rented plan’s outbound allowance and overage policy for the selected region before comparing prices. Hetzner’s traffic documentation, last changed 2024-05-21, lists 20 TB monthly for EU CX and CPX cloud servers, variable allowances for some US and Singapore cloud plans, and unlimited traffic for dedicated servers. These are Hetzner-specific terms, not a general allowance for rented servers; confirm the provider’s current policy (Hetzner traffic documentation).

Build an apples-to-apples monthly comparison
Use current prices for your location and plan rather than assuming a typical server rate. The available figures do not establish a specific server plan price or an independently measured draw for a particular Ryzen mini PC, so the table is a worksheet rather than a price verdict.

The rented-server total is its current recurring plan price plus applicable transfer overage, setup, and other relevant charges. The mini-PC total is its measured electricity plus relevant incremental costs. Neither calculation should charge the stream for equipment or services that would be running anyway unless you intentionally allocate those costs to it.

Choose a stream setting the encoder can sustain
YouTube automatically transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats, so the encoder sends one ingest feed; its outbound bitrate is not multiplied by audience size for this calculation. YouTube’s official encoder guidance recommends H.264 bitrates including 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Recommendations differ by codec and frame rate, so use YouTube’s current table for your intended settings rather than treating those examples as universal (YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
YouTube recommends RTMPS and identifies H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among encoder video codec options. Your selected hardware and software must support the encode you choose. Test the actual workload: a simple prerecorded loop may require different compute than a scene-heavy or live-produced broadcast.

Before committing to a 24/7 setup, check upload capacity and run a representative test with audio and movement similar to the planned content. YouTube’s official guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream,” and advises monitoring stream health during the event (YouTube Help).
Compare dependencies, administration, and recovery
- Mini PC: The stream depends on the computer, home mains power, router, and ISP connection. You handle operating-system updates, encoder supervision, monitoring, troubleshooting, and restarting after interruptions. Backup power or connectivity may reduce some local dependencies but adds cost.
- Rented server: The encoder runs away from the home connection, relying instead on the hosting provider’s network and the selected region’s terms. Rent and transfer charges recur, and server administration remains your responsibility unless the plan or another service covers it.
- Both: Neither option guarantees an uninterrupted stream. Decide who will notice a failure and what will restart the encoder and reconnect to YouTube. Test those recovery steps instead of assuming they will work.
