To estimate when buying a gaming PC costs less than renting a cloud PC, divide the PC’s net upfront cost—purchase and setup price minus expected resale value—by the monthly cloud bill minus the PC’s monthly running costs. The result is meaningful only if the cloud bill is higher than the ownership running costs. If it is not, there is no break-even point under those assumptions.
“Streaming VPS” can mean two different things: a full Windows cloud PC, such as Shadow, or a game-streaming membership, such as GeForce NOW. They are not interchangeable. First decide which one you would actually use, then compare equivalent games, performance, hours, and time horizon.
The break-even formula
Break-even months = net upfront PC cost ÷ monthly savings from owning
Expanded:
Break-even months = (PC purchase price + setup costs − expected resale value) ÷ (monthly cloud cost − monthly PC running cost)

Include only costs that apply to your situation. PC running costs usually include electricity and may include incremental maintenance, cooling, financing, or hosting. Cloud costs should include the exact plan price and any required add-ons or fees. If the monthly savings in the denominator are zero or negative, buying does not reach a cost crossover in this simplified model.
This is a constant-cost estimate, not a guaranteed date. If your usage, electricity price, plan price, or other costs change over time, compare cumulative costs month by month instead.

A full cloud PC
A full cloud PC provides a remote computer environment rather than only access to a supported game catalog. Shadow says its Gaming offers provide a full Windows 11 PC in the cloud. Its support page, updated August 25, 2026, describes Lite plans for lighter use—less than 120 hours per month—and non-Lite plans as suited to 210 hours per month. These are plan-specific allowances; check the current offer and terms for your region before using them in a calculation. Shadow also says the local device’s decoding ability and internet connection affect stream resolution and frame rate, and that 4K requires a stable, fast connection. Shadow’s hardware and plan details.
A game-streaming membership
GeForce NOW is a different kind of service: NVIDIA says members can sync PC game-store libraries and play supported games in its app or browser. It is not a general-purpose Windows PC rental. NVIDIA’s How to Play page describes 100 GB of single-session cloud storage for Performance and Ultimate memberships, with optional persistent storage. Check supported-game availability and storage terms against how you intend to play. NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW guide.

Build your cost inputs
What to include in the PC cost
- Complete system and setup: use the price of the whole PC and necessary setup, not just the graphics card. Include relevant peripherals, taxes, or delivery if they are part of your purchase.
- Expected resale value: estimate what the PC could sell for at the end of your comparison horizon. This reduces the net upfront cost, but the estimate is uncertain; test more than one resale assumption.
- Electricity: estimate whole-system power draw while gaming, actual gaming hours, and your local electricity tariff. GPU TDP alone is not the PC’s total power draw, and an assumed 24/7 workload can badly overstate usage.
- Other ownership costs: add maintenance, cooling, financing, or hosting only where they apply. Data-center facility and operations costs in GPU-server calculators are not ordinary home-PC costs. GPU Cost’s calculator lists hardware, deployment, electricity, cooling/PUE, facility and operations, support, resale, and cloud storage/network costs as possible model components; these are planning inputs, not vendor quotes. GPU Cost’s buy-versus-rent calculator.
What to include in the cloud cost
- Use the price for the exact service, tier, country, and billing period you would buy.
- Check whether the plan limits monthly hours or session length, and whether it charges for additional storage or other options.
- Record the resolution and frame-rate limits and whether your local device and connection can use them. A listed maximum does not guarantee that your setup will deliver it.
- Use expected hours per month, not a theoretical continuous-use total, when judging whether the plan’s limits fit.
For one volatile regional example, Shadow’s UK storefront showed Power Lite at £39.99/month, Power at £49.99/month, and Power Pro at £52.99/month when accessed October 3, 2026. These are a UK storefront snapshot, not global prices or a promise of current availability. The storefront lists differences in session length, monthly hours, storage, priority, and maximum resolution; check the current offer for the details relevant to your comparison. Calculate the PC’s monthly running cost
For electricity, convert watts to kilowatts, multiply by hours used, then multiply by your electricity rate:
Monthly electricity cost = (whole-PC gaming watts ÷ 1,000) × gaming hours per month × electricity cost per kWh

For example, if a meter or reasonable estimate gives the whole PC’s gaming draw, use that value rather than the GPU’s rated draw. Your bill may also include idle power if the machine stays on between sessions; count that only if it is genuinely part of your ownership pattern. Add other monthly running expenses only if you expect to incur them because you own the PC.

- Set a horizon and performance target. Decide how many months you are comparing and what games, resolution, frame rate, and workload the PC or service must support.
- Calculate net upfront PC cost. Add the PC and setup costs, then subtract the resale estimate at the horizon’s end.
- Calculate monthly PC operating cost. Estimate electricity from whole-system draw and realistic hours, then add applicable recurring costs.
- Calculate monthly cloud cost. Use the actual regional plan and include required add-ons or fees.
- Apply the formula. Divide net upfront PC cost by cloud monthly cost minus PC monthly running cost. The result is an estimated number of months to crossover.
- Compare both totals at your chosen horizon. If you expect to keep the PC longer than the estimated crossover, ownership may cost less under those assumptions. If you expect to stop using it earlier, the cloud option may cost less.
- Vary uncertain inputs. Recalculate with lower and higher resale values, lighter and heavier monthly use, and plausible electricity rates. A result that changes sharply with one assumption should be treated as uncertain, not as a precise prediction.
For changing prices or uneven use, build a month-by-month table with the costs actually expected in each month. Add PC upfront costs at the start, monthly ownership costs over time, and subtract resale proceeds at the end. Compare the cumulative PC total with cumulative cloud charges at the same dates. NVGPU also recommends comparing total costs for cloud and local GPUs rather than relying on a single headline rental rate. NVGPU’s cloud-versus-local cost guide.
Check whether the stream is usable for you
Price alone does not settle the comparison. Your connection, latency, and playback device affect whether streamed play meets your target. NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW requirements, accessed October 3, 2026, specify minimum bandwidth examples of 15 Mbps for up to 720p/60, 25 Mbps for 1080p/60, and 45 Mbps for 4K/120. NVIDIA also lists 35 Mbps for QHD/120, 55 Mbps for QHD or FHD at 240/360 FPS, and 65 Mbps for 5K/120, recommends latency under 80 ms to its data center, and recommends wired networking or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These are GeForce NOW requirements, not universal thresholds for every cloud service. NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW system requirements.
- Compare the service’s supported games or software with what you actually use.
- Check monthly usage and session caps against your typical play schedule.
- Check resolution, frame-rate, and storage terms for the specific plan.
- Test network latency and stability at the times you normally play; advertised bandwidth alone does not establish a good experience.
- Include non-financial factors such as portability, convenience, local ownership, and whether you want a PC for tasks beyond gaming.
Common calculation mistakes
- Using the GPU’s price as the PC’s price: include the full system and setup required to reach the target performance.
- Ignoring resale: a resale estimate can materially change net upfront cost, though it is not guaranteed.
- Using GPU TDP as total system power: estimate or measure the whole PC’s draw while gaming.
- Assuming 24/7 use: use actual expected hours, and account for plan caps or session rules.
- Comparing different products: a full cloud Windows PC and a supported-games streaming membership do not offer the same access.
- Using a price from the wrong country or date: use the current regional plan price and verify add-ons, limits, and billing terms.
- Treating the result as universal: there is no established neutral typical break-even period; the answer depends on the reader’s own costs and use.
