Lilly Singh’s rise began with comedy videos on YouTube in 2010, but her career grew into television, books, production and film. The “richest YouTubers” label rests on historical media estimates—not verified accounts of her current wealth: Forbes estimated her 2015 earnings at $2.5 million and her net worth at $10.5 million in 2017, according to later reports.
Why was Lilly Singh called Superwoman?
Singh began using the name Superwoman as a child, inspired by a hip-hop song by Lil’ Mo, according to a 2015 York University alumni profile. When she launched her YouTube channel in 2010, she adopted the name for her online persona because it felt empowering. In a 2019 WIRED interview, she said she had since dropped the persona name and went by Lilly.
She did not begin with a detailed plan to become a media entrepreneur. In York’s profile, she recalled that she wanted to express an idea creatively and did not expect YouTube to become a sustainable career or a way to make substantial money.
How did her YouTube comedy find an audience?
Singh’s early videos combined campy impressions of parents, hip-hop parodies and observational comedy. Much of the material drew on Punjabi and South Asian family experiences, including the lives of immigrant parents and their second-generation children. A 2019 PBS profile described these early formats and recorded four million subscribers and more than three billion views at that time.

The scale changed over the following years. The Washington Post reported 14.5 million subscribers in 2023. That article also recalled that Singh had fewer than 50,000 followers when she asked her parents to support her becoming a full-time creator. These are dated audience snapshots, not a current subscriber count.
What do the reported wealth figures actually mean?
The figures often used to explain Singh’s place among high-earning YouTube creators refer to different things in different years. They should not be combined or presented as a current net-worth figure.

| Figure | What it represents | Attribution and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| $2.5 million | Estimated earnings in 2015 | Forbes estimate reported by BBC Asian Network in March 2016; the report said it included revenue associated with her two YouTube channels, a 27-city tour, a film and other projects. |
| $10.5 million | Estimated net worth in 2017 | Forbes estimate as reported by The Washington Post in 2023; the Post said Forbes ranked Singh tenth on its list of the world’s highest-paid YouTube stars. It was a dated media estimate, not an audited disclosure. |
The earnings estimate is an amount for one year; net worth is a separate estimate of assets minus liabilities at a point in time. Neither figure establishes Singh’s present-day wealth. The available reporting does not verify a current net worth.
How did Singh’s career move beyond YouTube?
Singh’s online following became a platform for work across entertainment and publishing rather than a story of YouTube income alone. She hosted NBC’s A Little Late with Lilly Singh, which ended after two seasons, and pursued books, nonprofit work and production. In March 2024, ELLE reported that she co-wrote, produced and starred in Doin’ It, which premiered at SXSW.

Her books offer another direct look at her work. In the WIRED interview, Singh described How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life as a New York Times bestseller, said it had 50 chapters and discussed writing every word herself. The Washington Post also mentioned her later book, Be a Triangle: How I Went From Being Lost to Getting My Life Into Shape.

Singh’s reputation reflects the visibility of her videos, the size of her audience and the scale of the historical earnings estimates—not proof that YouTube alone produced a known fortune. Her reported 2015 earnings included projects beyond her channels, and her subsequent career expanded into late-night television, books, production and film. The most accurate account is a multi-platform rise, with the money figures treated as dated estimates rather than a current financial statement.
