Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie (1978) follows Kal-El from the doomed planet Krypton to Smallville and Metropolis, where he becomes a public hero and confronts Lex Luthor. Christopher Reeve stars as Superman and Clark Kent, alongside Margot Kidder as Lois Lane, Marlon Brando as Jor-El and Gene Hackman as Luthor. Its origin-story sweep, flight effects, John Williams score and earnest tone helped make it a landmark of superhero cinema.
What is Superman: The Movie about?
As Krypton faces destruction, scientist Jor-El sends his infant son Kal-El toward Earth. The child is raised as Clark Kent in Smallville, then travels to Metropolis and joins the Daily Planet. There, Clark adopts the identity of Superman, whose extraordinary abilities become public as he helps people across the city.
Lois Lane, a Daily Planet reporter, is both his colleague and the person most intrigued by the new hero. Meanwhile, criminal mastermind Lex Luthor pursues a scheme involving real-estate manipulation and nuclear missiles. The story moves from a cosmic-scale beginning to a mix of newsroom comedy, romance and superhero action.
Who stars in the 1978 Superman movie?
- Christopher Reeve as Superman and Clark Kent
- Margot Kidder as Lois Lane
- Marlon Brando as Jor-El
- Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor
Reeve’s performance distinguishes Clark’s reserved, awkward manner from Superman’s confidence without making them feel like unrelated characters. Kidder gives Lois a forceful presence as a reporter as well as a romantic lead. The supporting cast and the contrast between those two identities help ground the film’s spectacular premise in human relationships.

How the film tells Superman’s origin
The film gives substantial space to the events that precede Superman’s life in Metropolis: Krypton’s impending end, Kal-El’s journey to Earth and Clark’s upbringing in Smallville. That foundation makes the hero’s public arrival feel like the result of a life shaped by two worlds, rather than simply an unexplained appearance in a cape.
Once Clark reaches the Daily Planet, the film shifts into a lighter urban rhythm. Lois’s reporting and Luthor’s plotting draw Superman into the city’s daily life, balancing the mythic scale of the origin with comedy, romance and a more conventional criminal threat.

How the flight effects and score shaped the experience
Presenting a flying superhero convincingly was a central technical challenge. Donner’s film relied on photographic effects, projection and compositing rather than today’s digital techniques. The result helped sell flight as part of the film’s emotional promise, not merely a visual trick. In a retrospective, the American Film Institute (AFI) describes Donner as having “made audiences believe a man could fly.”
AFI also discusses the uninterrupted quick-change shot in which Clark becomes Superman, created through projection and compositing. John Williams’s score and the production design—from Krypton to the Daily Planet—reinforce the shift between the film’s cosmic origins and its lively newsroom world.

The film treated a comic-book hero as the centre of a large-scale, sincere feature production, combining a famous cast with ambitious effects and a sweeping musical score. The Library of Congress describes it as an origin story and selected it for the National Film Registry in 2017 for its cultural, historical and/or aesthetic significance. Director Richard Donner responded to the selection by saying, “I thank the National Film Registry for choosing ‘Superman: The Movie’ and ‘The Goonies’ as films to be treasured.”
For many viewers, Reeve became the definitive cinematic Superman. The film’s blend of spectacle, humor and earnestness also helped establish a model for the modern superhero blockbuster. Its influence is not just that it put a costumed hero on screen; it made the hero’s idealism and public image part of the appeal.

How much did the original Superman movie make?
Reported figures differ by source, date and measure, so they should not be treated as a single settled accounting. AFI records a reported opening weekend of $7,465,343 in 501 theaters, citing a 1978 Variety/Daily Variety report. AFI also cites a Warner Bros. press release reporting $64,423,042 earned in 33 days.
Budget estimates vary as well: Time reported $35 million in 1978, while Los Angeles reported $50 million that year. A 2023 Library of Congress essay gives a $55 million budget and approximately $300 million worldwide box office. These are figures from distinct contemporary and retrospective sources, not interchangeable totals.

Is Superman: The Movie the best Superman movie?
“Best” depends on what a viewer wants from a Superman film. This one is an especially strong choice for the character’s origin, Reeve’s dual performance, classic studio-era spectacle and an optimistic, romantic tone. Someone prioritizing a different interpretation of the character or more contemporary action may prefer another adaptation.
