This is a nominal-gross ranking, not an inflation-adjusted one. Because the available figures do not establish a consistent, complete worldwide list across eligible films, this article gives the verified leader and explains what can—and cannot—be ranked reliably.
What counts as a superhero movie—and a box office receipt?
There is no single database label that settles which films belong in a superhero ranking. Box Office Mojo has separate “Superhero” and “Comic Book Adaptation” genre keywords, and the latter can include films that do not fit every reader’s idea of a conventional superhero movie. A defensible list must state its eligibility rule and apply it consistently, including decisions about animation and hybrid adaptations.
“Box office receipts” here means cumulative nominal theatrical gross: worldwide ticket revenue reported in dollars, without inflation adjustment. It includes rereleases when the cited database’s all-releases total does so. These are not home-entertainment sales or a measure of profit; box office gross does not subtract production, marketing, or distribution costs.
The verified worldwide leader
Avengers: Endgame
Box Office Mojo reports Avengers: Endgame at $2,926,549,214 worldwide across all releases: $895,507,114 domestic and $2,031,042,100 international. The title page separately lists a September 2026 rerelease gross of $127,110,114 worldwide. That rerelease is part of the reason the all-releases figure should not be confused with the original theatrical run.

The Numbers reports a different worldwide total for the film. Since providers can differ in their recorded totals and release treatment, totals from different databases should not be combined into one ranking. The figure above is specifically Box Office Mojo’s all-releases entry.
Other high-grossing films: useful figures, not a complete global order
The available database entries establish substantial grosses for several other superhero and comic-book films, but they do not provide a consistent worldwide dataset from which to order all eligible titles. The domestic figures below come from Box Office Mojo’s comic-book-adaptation chart; they are not worldwide totals and should not be read as a global rank.
| Film | Domestic lifetime gross | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Avengers: Endgame | $858,373,000 | Original domestic release gross on Box Office Mojo’s comic-book-adaptation chart; not its all-releases worldwide total. |
| Spider-Man: No Way Home | $804,793,477 | Domestic lifetime gross listed on that chart. |
| Black Panther | $700,059,566 | Domestic lifetime gross listed on that chart. |
| Avengers: Infinity War | $678,815,482 | Domestic lifetime gross listed on that chart. |
| The Avengers | $623,357,910 | Domestic lifetime gross listed on that chart. |
| The Dark Knight | $533,345,358 | Domestic lifetime gross listed on that chart. |
The chart is a discovery and domestic-comparison aid, not a worldwide superhero-only ranking. The separate Black Panther title page classifies the film using both superhero and comic-book-adaptation keywords and reports $1,349,926,083 worldwide. That title-page worldwide value should not be substituted for a domestic chart entry.
Spider-Man: No Way Home worldwide figures
The Numbers reports Spider-Man: No Way Home at $1,921,206,586 worldwide, comprising $814,811,535 domestic and $1,106,395,051 international. This is a The Numbers figure, so it is useful as a standalone provider-attributed total, not as a value to mix into a Box Office Mojo ordering.

Why rankings change with the method
- Worldwide versus domestic: A worldwide rank combines domestic and international theatrical grosses. Domestic-only charts answer a different question.
- Original run versus cumulative releases: A rerelease can add materially to a film’s total. Endgame’s September 2026 rerelease is separately recorded by Box Office Mojo.
- Nominal versus inflation-adjusted: Nominal dollars compare reported revenue as collected; they do not account for changing ticket prices or the purchasing power of money over time.
- Eligibility: A comic-book adaptation is not automatically a superhero movie under every editorial definition. Animation and hybrid films also need an explicit, consistent rule.
- Provider: Databases can report different totals for the same title. Use one provider’s figures and release conventions for a complete ranking.
For these reasons, the most accurate takeaway from the figures cited here is a verified leader plus separate, clearly labeled comparison figures—not a fabricated complete order. The Numbers’ all-time chart also contains anomalous future-release entries, so it cannot safely be copied wholesale as a current ranking.
