The right choice can also depend on the specific translation, voice performance and viewing situation.
What is the difference between subs and dubs?
With subtitles, translated dialogue appears as text while the program’s original spoken audio remains. With dubbing, translated dialogue is recorded and replaces the original spoken dialogue in the audio track. Subtitles add a reading task; dubbing presents the translation through sound.
When should you choose subtitles?
- You want the original voices. Subtitles let you hear the source-language performances alongside the translation.
- You want exposure to another language. You can hear the original speech while reading translated text. A 2010 European Commission study summary says subtitling can help foreign-language skills and encourage awareness and motivation to learn in formal and informal settings. That is not a guarantee that watching any subtitled program will teach an individual a language.
- Reading on screen works for you. Subtitles require you to divide attention between the text and the image. Whether that feels comfortable depends on the viewer and the viewing situation.
When should you choose dubbing?
- Translated audio is more comfortable for you. Dubbing lets you follow translated dialogue by listening rather than reading it on screen.
- You would rather focus on the picture. Because the translated dialogue is spoken, you do not need to read subtitles to follow it.
- You prefer a localized voice performance. Dubbing replaces the original spoken dialogue with translated audio, so the voices and performances differ from the source-language track.
How does accessibility affect the choice?
Subtitles, captions, dubbing and audio description are not interchangeable. Subtitles provide translated dialogue as text; captions can make spoken content accessible in text, including information such as relevant sounds; dubbing provides translated dialogue as audio; audio description conveys visual information through narration. Which service is useful depends on the viewer’s needs and on what the program makes available.
The International Telecommunication Union’s summary of Recommendation T.701.25, dated March 29, 2022 and listed as in force, addresses the audio presentation of captions, subtitles and other on-screen text. It says the recommendation “positions itself for situations in which various access services coexist and users are given the choice to select those best suited to their needs.” The practical point is to choose an available access service that fits the person, rather than assume one mode serves everyone.

What does the research say about which is better?
The evidence here does not establish a universal winner or a single preference rate. A 2010 European Commission study summary reports that 6,000 people across 33 countries and 5,000 students were asked about viewing habits, preferences for dubbing or subtitling, and language skills. Its summary supports a potential language-learning benefit from subtitling, but the available record does not provide a universal share of viewers who prefer either mode.
A 2017 study record by Matamala, Perego and Bottiroli describes an experiment with 51 young Spanish adults comparing dubbed and subtitled film versions. Researchers measured general comprehension, dialogue recognition, face-name association, visual scene recognition, appreciation, self-reported effort and memory judgments. The record does not provide enough detail to say which version performed better on those measures, and this sample cannot settle preferences for audiences worldwide.

How to choose a track for a documentary
- Decide what matters most. If hearing the original voices is important, start with subtitles. If translated speech is easier for you to follow, start with dubbing.
- Check the kind of text track. Look for subtitles or captions that meet your needs; captions may include relevant sound information, while translated subtitles focus on dialogue.
- Consider the documentary’s images. If you want to keep your attention on visual details and prefer listening to translated dialogue, dubbing may suit you. If original narration or interviews matter to you, subtitles preserve their spoken audio.
- Try the other available track if the first is not working. Readability, timing, translation choices and voice performance can affect the experience. The general label “sub” or “dub” cannot establish the quality of a particular title’s tracks.
So, subs or dubs?
Choose subtitles to hear the original performance while reading the translation. Choose dubbing when translated audio better fits your comfort or access needs. If both are available, the better option is the one that lets you follow the documentary in the way that works for you.
