Retro-Exo is the public home of eXoDOS, eXoWin3x, eXoWin9x and related preservation projects. Instead of leaving old PC games as obscure disk images, the project combines game files with per-title emulator settings, launchers, manuals, artwork and technical fixes so many of them can be played with little manual configuration.
That makes it an extraordinary historical library—but not a normal storefront, a universal emulator or an automatic copyright exemption. The full collections demand substantial storage and bandwidth, are primarily designed around Windows, and can include games whose copyrights still apply.
What Retro-Exo actually is
The project hub at retro-exo.com brings together several collections associated with eXo:
- eXoDOS: DOS-era games and software.
- eXoWin3x: titles designed for Windows 3.x.
- eXoWin9x: Windows 95/98-era games and multimedia software.
- eXoScummVM: adventure games and other software supported by ScummVM.
It is better understood as a curated, playable preservation library than as “a DOS emulator.” Different games may use DOSBox, ScummVM, 86Box or other compatibility layers, selected through individual launch configurations. The goal, described as “preservation through playability,” is to keep software usable rather than merely stored. (RetroRGB interview)

Depending on the title, the package may also retain manuals, box art, CD content, music, alternate editions and installation information. Those details matter: a game’s original experience could depend on a particular sound card, CD-ROM edition, memory arrangement or graphics accelerator.
How large is the collection?
Reported figures change with releases. Independent coverage has described eXoDOS at roughly 7,600 DOS games and the complete archive at more than 600 GB, with one report estimating about 638 GB. Those are release-specific figures, not permanent specifications. (Lon Seidman’s overview)
The number is significant because the library reaches beyond famous commercial releases. It can include shareware, BBS-era curiosities, alternate floppy and CD versions, obscure publishers and technical variants. That breadth makes Retro-Exo useful as a historical index as well as a nostalgia machine. It also creates a practical problem: a 1 TB drive may not have enough usable room after accounting for the operating system, torrent staging, extraction, updates and backups.
eXoDOS and eXoWin9x are not the same experience
| Feature | eXoDOS | eXoWin9x |
|---|---|---|
| Era | DOS | Windows 95/98 |
| Typical challenge | DOS memory, sound, timing and CD configuration | Operating-system APIs, drivers, DirectX, virtual CDs and 3D acceleration |
| Expected ease | Generally the more mature and approachable starting point | More variable and hardware-dependent |
| Best use | Broad access to classic PC games and shareware | Windows multimedia, 3D and late-1990s PC experiences |
DOS games usually run inside a focused emulation environment. Windows 9x software may require an entire virtualized operating system, period drivers, a particular DirectX version or a simulated 3Dfx card. Coverage of eXoWin9x describes optimized virtual machines and system changes that are swapped as needed, but its scope and implementation are version-sensitive. Do not assume it is as broad or frictionless as eXoDOS.

What installation is like
Current coverage describes two broad eXoDOS approaches: a large archive and a smaller installation that downloads games on demand and retains them locally. Large releases have been distributed through BitTorrent, and reported setups use batch-file installation followed by a LaunchBox front end. Verify the current installer, release notes and distribution method on the official project site before starting.
Prepare before downloading
- A modern Windows computer, unless you are prepared to troubleshoot alternatives.
- More free space than the quoted archive size for extraction, updates and backups.
- A reliable BitTorrent client for releases distributed that way.
- A short, ordinary, user-writable destination such as a dedicated folder or drive.
- A backup plan for launcher databases, saves and configuration files.
Avoid protected system folders, unusually long paths and moving the collection after installation. Antivirus software may quarantine old batch files, emulators or game executables; investigate each alert rather than disabling protection wholesale.
What “one click” does—and does not—mean
The launcher removes much of the repetitive work involved in choosing a sound card, mounting a CD image or selecting an emulator. It cannot guarantee perfect behavior on every operating system, controller or monitor. A title can open successfully and still have incorrect speed, audio, cut-scenes, input or save-game behavior.
Hardware requirements in practice
Retro-Exo does not require a period-correct computer. A reported demonstration used a Ryzen 5 6650H-class mini PC with 16 GB of RAM, including demanding examples, but that is a test system rather than a universal minimum. (Lon Seidman’s overview)

- Storage and bandwidth: the main constraints for the complete archive.
- CPU: increasingly important for 86Box and some Windows 9x virtual machines.
- GPU: usually unimportant for ordinary DOS games, but relevant to 3Dfx-era software.
- Input: keyboard and mouse remain essential for strategy games, simulators, adventures and text-heavy RPGs.
- Display: integer scaling, aspect-ratio correction or a CRT-style shader can improve pixel-art games.
- Audio: Sound Blaster FM, Roland MT-32 and General MIDI are different experiences, not interchangeable “quality” settings.
What is worth playing first?
Start with a small playlist rather than installing thousands of games and scrolling indefinitely.
For pure nostalgia
- Sierra and LucasArts adventures.
- Apogee and other shareware platformers.
- Early id Software shooters.
- Classic strategy and management games.
- BBS-era oddities that never received modern reissues.
For technical preservation
Choose games that demonstrate why configuration matters: CD-ROM speech, alternate sound hardware, unusual memory requirements, 3Dfx acceleration or multiple floppy and CD editions. Reported examples include Wing Commander II, Space Quest IV, Battle Arena Toshinden, Night Raid, DOOM, Blood, King’s Quest VI, X-COM and Command & Conquer. These are illustrative examples, not a guarantee of a current release’s contents. (Lon Seidman’s overview)
Wing Commander II is a useful demonstration because different configurations can restore CD speech and period sound options. The point is not simply that the executable starts; it is that the surrounding hardware-dependent experience can be represented.
For discovery
Use favorites, genre, publisher, developer, hardware-feature and shareware groupings to build manageable collections. Search for games you remember vaguely, then explore neighboring releases rather than treating the catalog as a ranked list.

Common failure points
Storage and extraction
Separate download size, installed size, temporary extraction space and backup space. A nearly full drive can cause failures that look like corrupt archives or broken installers.
Emulator mismatch
A game may need a different CPU speed, sound-card choice, CD mount, VGA mode, MT-32 configuration or emulator. “Runs” should include correct speed, audio, video, input and saving—not merely reaching a title screen.
Windows 9x quirks
Expect longer launches, display problems, inconsistent 3D acceleration and titles that work only in a particular virtual-machine configuration. Windows-era preservation is inherently more dependent on drivers and operating-system behavior.
Controllers and audio
Controllers suit arcade games and platformers, but keyboard and mouse are usually better for simulators, adventures, strategy games and text adventures. Likewise, the most authentic audio may be a matter of preference: Sound Blaster FM is not Roland MT-32, and MIDI emulation can require additional processing or setup.

Legal and safety reality
Old does not mean public domain. “Abandonware” is a community label, not a blanket copyright exception. A game can remain copyrighted after its publisher closes, its website disappears or no store currently sells it. Preservation value and a downloader’s legal right are separate questions.
When an authorized edition exists, buying it from the rights holder or a store such as GOG is the clearest option. Check the status of individual titles and the law where you live; do not treat a forum interpretation as legal advice.
For technical safety, begin at the official Retro-Exo site, avoid repacked “one-click” mirrors, scan downloads, retain published hashes where available, use a non-administrator account, keep the archive away from sensitive work data and back up saves. No project should be called malware-free without current, direct verification.
Alternatives to Retro-Exo
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| GOG | Buying one or a few games legally | Smaller catalog; editions and extras vary |
| DOSBox-X | Owners of legal game files who want precise control | Manual configuration and no unified catalog |
| ScummVM | Supported adventure games | Only compatible engines and legally obtained game data |
| Browser services such as DOS.Zone | Immediate play without installation | Smaller catalog, online dependence and different licensing |
| Original hardware | CRT output, period controllers and physical media | Cost, maintenance, failure and scarcity |
Independent coverage describes DOS.Zone as a browser-oriented service with roughly 2,000 titles, substantially smaller than the reported eXoDOS archive. (Lon Seidman’s retro coverage)
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Who should use Retro-Exo?
- Choose it if you want broad discovery, historical variants, contextual materials and ready-made configurations, and you have substantial storage and bandwidth.
- Choose GOG if you need one or two games, a smaller download and an authorized transaction.
- Choose manual emulation if you own the original files and want to learn or control every setting.
- Choose a browser service if installation is impossible and a smaller catalog is acceptable.
- Choose original hardware if physical media, CRTs and period peripherals matter more than convenience.
The Bottom Line
Retro-Exo is exceptional preservation infrastructure for enthusiasts who want a navigable history of DOS and early Windows gaming, not merely a folder of ROMs. eXoDOS is the sensible entry point; eXoWin9x is more experimental and demanding. The full archive is overkill for a single game, and its preservation mission does not make every included title legal to download. Treat it as a Windows-focused preservation library, verify current releases at retro-exo.com, and buy authorized editions whenever they are available.
