Yes, Spotify really tested putting song lyrics behind a Premium paywall. The September 2023 experiment affected a limited group of Free users, and restrictions became more visible for some accounts in 2024. But it was not a permanent, worldwide rule: Spotify’s current support documentation says standard lyrics are available to both Free and Premium users. Premium’s clearest lyrics-specific advantage in 2026 is offline access, which is still rolling out.
The timeline: from universal launch to targeted restrictions
| Date | What Spotify did | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| November 18, 2021 | Spotify announced its modern in-app lyrics experience for Free and Premium users. | Lyrics launched as a cross-tier feature. Spotify’s announcement |
| September 5, 2023 | Spotify confirmed a limited test that asked some Free users to subscribe to Premium to view lyrics. | This was an experiment limited by account and market, not proof that every Free user lost lyrics. TechCrunch’s report |
| May 2, 2024 | Reports described a broader restriction: some Free users saw a Premium prompt, while others could view lyrics for roughly three songs per month. | The reported allowance applied to some users, not necessarily the whole Free tier. Spotify said feature availability could vary by tier, market, device and time. TechCrunch’s report |
| July 30, 2024 | Spotify said it was expanding lyrics access for Free users globally. | Access was broadened, but Spotify did not publish the replacement monthly limit, so “unlimited Free lyrics” is not a verified description. TechCrunch’s report |
| February 4, 2026 | Spotify announced lyric translations and previews for Free and Premium users, while offline lyrics began rolling out to Premium. | The current distinction is between ordinary and offline lyrics-related features. Spotify’s announcement |
Are Spotify lyrics Premium-only now?
No—not universally. Spotify’s current support page says lyrics are available to both Free and Premium users. It also warns that availability depends on the market, device, song and rights-holder agreements. A missing lyrics panel therefore does not establish that an account needs Premium.

The practical answer is conditional: standard, on-demand lyrics are generally available on both tiers where Spotify has the lyrics and supports the device. Individual accounts can still encounter a temporary experiment, a regional difference or a catalog limitation.
Spotify’s current instructions describe opening the Now Playing view and swiping up to find lyrics on mobile. The company also documents a lyrics-preview setting in the Now Playing three-dot menu: Spotify’s lyrics instructions.

What Premium adds in 2026
Spotify’s February 2026 announcement separates four features that are often incorrectly treated as one entitlement:
| Feature | Free | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Standard lyrics while streaming | Generally available where supported | Available where supported |
| Lyric previews | Available on mobile and tablet | Available on mobile and tablet |
| Lyric translations | Rolling out globally where supported | Rolling out globally where supported |
| Offline lyrics for downloaded listening | Not indicated as available | Rolling out to Premium users |
| Lyrics for every song and device | No guarantee | No guarantee |
This table reflects Spotify’s published descriptions; rollout timing and catalog coverage can differ. Premium does not promise lyrics for every track, every platform or every country.
Why Spotify tested a lyrics paywall
The commercial logic is clear even though Spotify has not published conversion results. Lyrics are a high-engagement feature: people actively open them to sing along, understand a song or check a line. Making that moment a subscription prompt gives Free listeners a visible reason to consider Premium, without redesigning playback or advertising.

That is an analysis of the incentive, not a disclosed result. Spotify confirmed the test and later restrictions, but it did not release a conversion rate or say publicly that the experiment met a particular target. The reporting connected the move with efforts to convert Free listeners, while leaving the internal outcome unknown.
Why access may have been expanded again
Spotify confirmed the July 2024 expansion but did not explain its cause. Several explanations are plausible, not proven:
- Lyrics may work better as a free engagement and discovery feature than as a complete lockout.
- A hard restriction can make the service look less competitive against other music apps with synchronized lyrics.
- A small allowance or Premium-only extras may balance conversion goals with user satisfaction better than removing access entirely.
- Licensing and rights-holder arrangements may affect availability independently of subscription strategy.
User backlash is another possible explanation, but the cited announcements do not establish that it caused the change.

Why two Spotify users can see different lyrics behavior
Spotify explicitly allows feature availability to vary. Check these possibilities before assuming a paywall:
- Market: The account’s country can affect feature rollout and rights.
- Device: Mobile, desktop, web, television and console interfaces may not offer identical controls.
- Song: Spotify does not have lyrics for every catalog entry.
- Rights: Agreements with lyric providers and rights holders can determine whether text loads.
- Rollout timing: New features can arrive in phases rather than simultaneously.
- Account cohort: Spotify has previously tested lyrics rules with subsets of Free accounts.
An outdated app or a stale session can also create a temporary display problem, although Spotify’s published support material does not identify either as a universal cause.

What to do if a Free account cannot show lyrics
- Play a track known to include lyrics.
- Open the Now Playing screen.
- On mobile, swipe up from the bottom of Now Playing and look for the lyrics panel.
- Try another well-known song to see whether the issue follows one track.
- Check the same account on another supported device.
- Update Spotify, then sign in again if the display remains inconsistent.
- Note the exact message. “Enjoy lyrics on Spotify Premium” may indicate a tier experiment or account limitation, but it is not evidence of a global Spotify policy.
If the song is downloaded for offline use, remember that offline lyrics are part of the Premium rollout announced in 2026.

Is Premium worth paying for just lyrics?
| Your use case | Most likely answer |
|---|---|
| Occasional lyric lookups while connected | Free may be sufficient when the track and device support lyrics. |
| Frequent sing-alongs on commutes or flights | Premium is more compelling because offline lyrics are its clearest lyrics-specific advantage. |
| Translation of foreign-language songs | Premium is not required solely for translations; Spotify says they are rolling out to both tiers. |
| General listening upgrade | Consider Premium’s broader benefits, including ad-free playback and offline music, rather than lyrics alone. |
Spotify’s current Premium offer and price depend on country, plan, account eligibility, taxes and promotions. For example, its U.S. signup page may show a limited introductory offer to eligible people who have not previously tried Premium; verify the terms at checkout: Spotify Premium.
Alternatives if lyrics are your priority
Apple Music
Apple Music is a paid streaming alternative for listeners who prioritize an integrated subscription and synchronized lyrics. It is not a substitute for Spotify’s permanently free, ad-supported tier.
YouTube Music
YouTube Music fits people already invested in YouTube’s music-video ecosystem. It may be less suitable if Spotify playlists, recommendations or Spotify Connect are central to your setup.

Musixmatch
Musixmatch is a lyrics-focused service and part of the wider lyrics-data ecosystem. It does not replace Spotify’s integrated playback and playlist experience.
The accurate headline in one sentence
Spotify did test making lyrics a Premium feature, and some Free users later faced meaningful limits, but standard lyrics are currently documented as available to both tiers. Premium’s differentiated lyrics capability is offline access, while song, device, market, rights and rollout conditions still determine what any individual account can see.
