Streamlabs Mobile offers camera and screen streaming, scenes, alerts, and paid continuity features, but its reviewed setup pages do not establish equivalent background behavior. Neither app is proven to run without interruption indefinitely; test your exact phone, power, and network setup before relying on a long session.
What “continuous” means on a phone
There are three different things a creator might mean by a continuous stream: keeping the video feed going while another app is open, keeping a YouTube live event available after the phone stops sending video, or broadcasting for a long uninterrupted session. These are not interchangeable. PRISM documents Android background broadcasting and separately documents keeping a YouTube session on air after the device stream ends. The latter preserves the session, not an uninterrupted video feed.
YouTube’s mobile-app guidance has eligibility requirements, while its encoder workflow is a separate option for more involved production. YouTube says encoders can support gameplay, overlays, and external hardware such as microphones and cameras. YouTube’s live-streaming overview explains the distinction.

Can PRISM Live Studio stream in the background?
PRISM’s guide says its app can continue broadcasting while running in the background on Android when the required “Allow display over other apps” permission is enabled. The guide also says iOS apps do not support background live broadcasting because of operating-system policies. Follow PRISM’s current in-app permission prompt or device settings to enable the permission; the exact Android menu path can vary by manufacturer and OS version. PRISM’s background-broadcasting guide describes the behavior.
Do not assume that background permission means the phone will keep streaming after a screen lock, aggressive battery management, overheating, app termination, or a network handoff. Those conditions were not established by the reviewed documentation. Verify them on the device and connection you plan to use.

Can you switch apps while streaming on iPhone or Android?
Android
With PRISM, enable “Allow display over other apps” before relying on background broadcasting. Test switching to the specific app you need and check the YouTube live preview or stream health. Streamlabs’ reviewed setup guidance does not establish that its broadcast continues under the same background conditions, so test rather than assuming it does.
iPhone
PRISM says background live broadcasting is unsupported on iOS. If leaving PRISM is essential, plan on a workflow that does not depend on background broadcasting from the iPhone, or use an encoder-based setup appropriate to the production. Streamlabs’ reviewed pages likewise do not establish background broadcasting on iOS.

Set up YouTube access before a long mobile broadcast
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s mobile live-stream guide lists a verified channel, at least 50 subscribers, no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. These are requirements stated for its mobile live-streaming instructions; do not assume without confirmation that every detail applies identically to third-party encoder apps. - Choose the app and test its actual behavior. Configure the YouTube destination in Streamlabs or PRISM, then test the intended camera or screen source, audio, background behavior, and network before scheduling a long session.
- Check the viewer-facing feed. Confirm that the YouTube preview shows the expected picture and sound, and monitor stream health where available. A live event being present does not by itself prove that a usable video feed is reaching viewers.
- Prepare power and reduce interruptions. Streamlabs advises starting fully charged, keeping a charger nearby, closing background apps, and reducing notification interruptions. It notes that charging during a stream can strain the battery. A power bank may be a practical option, but it does not guarantee uptime. See Streamlabs’ preparation guidance.
Does a YouTube stream stay live if the phone disconnects?
A dropped phone connection and an ongoing YouTube event are separate issues. PRISM describes keeping a YouTube live session on air after the device stream ends, then resuming it in the app. This is session or event-link handling; it does not keep the phone’s video feed transmitting while it is offline. PRISM’s guide to ending YouTube streams explains its session behavior. Streamlabs’ reviewed pages do not establish equivalent handling.
Will YouTube archive a long live stream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder guidance. That is an archive rule, not a promise that either mobile app will stay connected for that duration, nor a definitive maximum session length. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.

When an encoder is a better fit
If the stream needs gameplay capture, layered overlays, or external microphones, cameras, or other production hardware, consider YouTube’s encoder workflow rather than assuming a phone app will cover the setup. YouTube’s encoder instructions call for a server URL and stream key in the encoder and recommend monitoring stream health. Secure the stream key: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Consult YouTube’s encoder setup guide for its current workflow.
