You can run a prerecorded playlist as a continuous YouTube live stream without OBS by using FFmpeg on an always-on Linux VPS. FFmpeg sends the files to YouTube using the stream URL and key from Live Control Room; a systemd service can restart FFmpeg if it exits. You still need to check YouTube’s stream health: a looping file and a process supervisor cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
Before you set up the VPS, make sure the channel can go live
YouTube requires the channel to be verified, to have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and for the streamer to be at least 16. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so confirm access before scheduling a launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and live-streaming restrictions and eligibility.
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Copy its server URL and stream key from the stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public repository, paste it into a public support post, or leave it in a shell history or log that other users can read.
Choose compatible media and decide whether to re-encode
Stream copy for compatible files
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 repeats an input indefinitely. The option -c copy passes the compressed audio and video through without re-encoding, reducing encoding work on the VPS. It is appropriate only if the file’s streams, timestamps, frame rate, resolution and container are compatible with the intended YouTube output. FFmpeg documents these options in its command-line documentation.

Re-encode when you need consistent output
If files use incompatible codecs or formats, or you need to standardize their output, re-encode rather than assuming stream copy will work. Re-encoding uses VPS CPU, so test a representative section and confirm the chosen instance can sustain the workload. One FFmpeg command is not suitable for every playlist: differing durations, audio layouts, frame rates and transitions can change how files should be joined or sequenced.
Build the complete playlist and test it end to end before relying on it. Confirm that every item starts as expected, audio remains in sync, and transitions do not create gaps or unwanted black frames. The infinite-loop option repeats an input; playlist sequencing and transitions require their own configuration.

Set YouTube-compatible output and bitrate
YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says it must not exceed 4 seconds. For stereo audio, its recommended bitrate is 128 Kbps. Let Live Control Room detect resolution and frame rate by default unless you have a reason to use a manual stream key. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
| H.264 output | YouTube-listed minimum video bitrate | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS plan has sufficient network capacity. The VPS must sustain the outgoing bitrate continuously, with headroom for network variation. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, using audio and movement representative of the intended stream, and monitoring stream-health messages before and during the broadcast. See its testing guidance.

Connect FFmpeg to YouTube securely
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the RTMP connection using TLS/SSL. Copy the RTMPS server URL from Live Control Room instead of assuming a remembered endpoint; YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default. Keep the server URL and stream key separate in your configuration. If an SSL connection error occurs, check that the URL begins with rtmps; YouTube notes that specifying port 443 can help in some configurations. Details are in YouTube’s encoder connection guidance.
First run FFmpeg manually with the actual media, server URL and key, then check that Live Control Room receives the stream and shows a preview. Do not treat a successful local process start as proof of a successful broadcast. The stream key is a credential; place it in a protected configuration file or equivalent secret mechanism readable only by the dedicated, unprivileged account that runs FFmpeg.

Run FFmpeg as a supervised Linux service
Once the manual run works, use systemd or another service manager to start the process at boot and restart it after a failure. Store the working FFmpeg invocation in the service configuration, run it as a dedicated non-root account, and retain logs that help diagnose exits. Set up a practical check or alert for both process failure and YouTube stream-health problems.
A service restart can recover a crashed FFmpeg process; it cannot fix a revoked or incorrect key, missing media, unsupported input, exhausted CPU, a network outage, or a broadcast ended by YouTube. Check the service status and logs on the VPS, then check Live Control Room to confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. A Linux VPS example using FFmpeg and systemd is available from LinuxBabe; it is an implementation example, not a YouTube specification or an uptime guarantee.

Protect the content and understand YouTube archiving
Every video, image, music track and other element in the broadcast must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Confirm that you have the rights needed for each item in the playlist; a successful encoder setup does not establish that the content is licensed or permitted. Review YouTube’s live-streaming policies and resolve rights questions for your specific material before going live.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a 24/7 broadcast will become one indefinitely archived video. Check current YouTube controls and how the service handles the duration and segmentation of your broadcast. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube receives no input | Incorrect server URL or key, connection problem, or an RTMP/RTMPS mismatch | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm the RTMPS URL is used, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection error. If SSL fails, check the scheme and consider YouTube’s note about port 443. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames | The VPS upload path may not sustain the chosen bitrate, or output settings may be unsuitable | Compare the configured output with YouTube’s recommendations, test sustained upload capacity, and inspect stream-health messages. Reduce output demands if the network cannot maintain them. |
| FFmpeg exits immediately or the loop does not behave as expected | Unsupported media, invalid paths, playlist sequencing, or a command that does not match the input | Run the command manually, inspect FFmpeg logs, verify files and permissions, and test the full sequence rather than only one clip. |
| The service restarts repeatedly | The underlying error remains, such as bad credentials, unavailable files, CPU exhaustion or network failure | Inspect systemd status and logs, correct the underlying problem, then confirm the process is healthy in Live Control Room. |
| The VPS process appears healthy but YouTube is not receiving a healthy stream | A running process does not prove successful ingest | Check Live Control Room’s incoming preview and stream-health messages; diagnose the encoder and ingest path separately from service status. |
Choose between stream copy, re-encoding and a managed service
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stream copy with FFmpeg | Source files already have compatible streams and you can administer FFmpeg | Less encoding work, but compatibility can be restrictive; test the playlist and ingest behavior. |
| Re-encoding with FFmpeg | Files need normalized or consistent output | More control over output, with additional CPU demand; benchmark the VPS and test representative content. |
| Self-managed Linux VPS | You want Linux-level control and can maintain services, credentials, logs and monitoring | You are responsible for administration and ongoing network and stream-health checks. VPS provider capacity and pricing vary and are not specified here. |
| StreamNeo managed cloud service | You want to loop uploaded videos to YouTube without keeping a computer running or administering FFmpeg | It is a hosted alternative rather than a Linux VPS workflow; its slot limits and included features are described on StreamNeo. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live; it does not stream from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the video, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one flat price per slot, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required (one free day per account). Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
See StreamNeo plans and billing options, or start your free day on StreamNeo.
