Choose OBS Studio if you want free, open-source software with extensive controls, plugin and scripting support, or the listed Linux option. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if guided onboarding and built-in alerts, widgets, themes, and overlays better suit your workflow. Streamlabs OBS is the wording in the question; the current application name used in the official material reviewed is Streamlabs Desktop.

Neither set of official materials provides a controlled head-to-head performance test or proves one app is universally easier. The right choice depends on your operating system, workflow, scenes, and computer.
How the workflows differ
OBS Studio: build the production you want
OBS Studio offers multi-source scenes, audio mixing and per-source filters, VST plugin support, customizable docks, transitions, hotkeys, Studio Mode, and Multiview. The OBS Project also documents an API for plugins and Lua or Python scripts. That flexibility is useful if you want to shape a production setup around your own sources and process, but it means you may need to configure more yourself.
Streamlabs Desktop: start with an integrated creator workflow
Streamlabs’ onboarding guide walks new users through permissions, choosing live streaming or recording, signing in, selecting a theme, adding camera, microphone, or screen sources, and adding alerts. Streamlabs also describes standard alerts, widgets, tipping, themes, and overlays as free features. This bundle may be convenient if those tools match your needs; the official documentation does not establish that every user will find it easier.

Free features, paid limits, and multistreaming
OBS Studio is described by its project as free and open source. Streamlabs says basic features of its tools are free and that Ultra is optional. Its feature information identifies Multistream and premium overlays as Ultra benefits, alongside VIP support. No current Ultra price is established by the reviewed official material, so check Streamlabs’ current terms before deciding based on cost.
If you need to send a broadcast to several destinations through Streamlabs, confirm that the destinations and account terms you need remain available. The support page names Twitch, Facebook Gaming, YouTube Live, Trovo, and custom RTMP destinations, but availability can change.

Operating systems and computer requirements
The OBS Project requirements page lists Windows 10 or 11; macOS 11 or later on Intel or Apple Silicon with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with OpenGL 3.3 and X Window System or Wayland. The page is dated August 25, 2021, so check the requirements for the current release before installing. OBS warns that a compatible system does not guarantee the computer can stream or record successfully; CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
The Streamlabs requirements page lists Windows 10 or macOS 12 and later, with 8 GB RAM as a minimum. Its recommendations include 16 GB or more RAM, an SSD, and listed CPU and GPU families. It gives 3.6 Mbps or better upload speed for 720p at 30 fps for most platforms as a guideline. Page metadata was inconsistent when reviewed, so treat these as the page’s stated guidance, not a guarantee for every workload or destination, and verify the live requirements page before installing.

Do not choose based on assumptions that one application is inherently lighter. Actual load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, content, concurrent software, and hardware. Test your intended setup on the computer you will use.
Migration and switching
Streamlabs’ onboarding guide says you can optionally import previous OBS Studio settings. That is an available import path, not a promise that every setting, plugin, or integration will transfer. Before switching, note your scene structure and settings, then inspect the imported setup and reconnect or rebuild anything that did not carry over.

A practical way to decide
- Check OS support. Confirm the current requirements for your operating system, especially if you use Linux.
- List the tools you actually need. If plugins, scripts, configurable docks, or detailed scene controls matter, start with OBS Studio. If integrated alerts, widgets, themes, and overlays are central, try Streamlabs Desktop.
- Resolve the multistream question. If you need Streamlabs Multistream, confirm Ultra’s current feature eligibility, supported destinations, and price.
- Test your real production. Set up your intended resolution, frame rate, encoder, sources, and scene complexity; make a recording or private test before a consequential broadcast.
- Switch with a check, not an assumption. If importing OBS settings into Streamlabs Desktop, verify each scene, source, and integration afterward.
