No—not as a general replacement. A 24/7 livestream can give a creator or brand an always-available show and a place for real-time interaction. A website is better suited to organized information, on-demand browsing, transactions, and an official destination the brand controls. For many organizations, the stronger choice is to use both: the stream for ongoing programming and community, the website for the information and actions viewers need.
What a 24/7 livestream does that a website does not
A continuous stream is a persistent programming layer: viewers can arrive at different times and find a live feed, whether it is a product demonstration, an ambient music or lifestyle channel, an educational preview, or a live-shopping session. These are examples proposed by streaming vendor Upstream, not proven outcomes for every brand.
Its distinctive feature is synchronous participation. Viewers may watch together and interact through live chat or other available platform features. A website, by contrast, lets visitors move at their own pace between pages, FAQs, product details, and forms. The two formats answer different audience needs rather than competing as interchangeable containers.
What the audience figures do—and do not—show
YouTube reported that, on average, more than 30% of its daily logged-in viewers watched live content in Q2 2025. That is evidence that live video is a substantial part of activity on YouTube; it does not establish that a 24/7 stream will attract viewers, outperform a website, or earn more than a scheduled stream.

YouTube has also described live features intended to support discovery, horizontal and vertical streaming, livestream highlights, side-by-side ads, and transitions to members-only livestreams. The announcement described features and rollout plans, so availability can vary by date, account, and geography. These developments indicate platform investment in live formats; they are not a promise that continuous broadcasts receive a recommendation boost or that extra hours automatically produce revenue. See YouTube’s live-streaming updates for the platform’s announcement.
Broader YouTube economic figures need the same care. YouTube reported that its creative ecosystem contributed $55 billion to U.S. GDP and supported the equivalent of 490,000 full-time jobs in 2024, based on research with Oxford Economics. It also reported paying more than $70 billion to creators, artists, and media companies between 2021 and 2023. These figures concern YouTube’s wider ecosystem, not 24/7 livestreaming alone, and should not be used to forecast a stream’s earnings. In the announcement, CEO Neal Mohan said, “Looking at this momentum and toward the next two decades, the creator economy is just getting started. We’re excited to see what our next 20 years have in store.” The remark is broad creator-economy context, not a specific claim about always-on video.

How to decide whether an always-on stream belongs in your strategy
Start with the viewer’s reason to arrive
Ask what someone gets by joining at an arbitrary hour. A continuous product demo, a community space with active participation, or a useful ambient channel may make sense when the format itself remains worthwhile. If the audience needs reference material, detailed product specifications, support instructions, or a way to complete a purchase, make those easy to find on a website as well.
Plan for operations, freshness, and moderation
A locally operated continuous stream needs reliable internet and hardware capable of nonstop encoding. It also creates ongoing infrastructure, content-freshness, and moderation demands. Decide who checks the stream and chat, how stale or unsuitable material is handled, and what viewers should do if nobody is available to respond. The practical workload depends on the content and operating model; the available evidence does not establish a universal cost or staffing level.

Keep the destination and conversion path clear
A stream hosted on YouTube depends on YouTube’s rules, distribution, and product features. A website gives a brand a separate, more organized destination for its identity, explanations, and transactions. Link the relevant page where viewers can find it, and make sure the next step—learning more, contacting you, or buying—is clear rather than assuming that time spent watching will convert by itself.
Measure usefulness, not just hours online
YouTube Studio’s live-stream reports can include stream health, concurrent viewers, hours streamed, watch time, retention, demographics, playback locations, traffic sources, and devices. Which reports appear depends on context; YouTube notes that vertical-stream metrics can be reviewed separately after the stream ends. Consult YouTube Help’s guide to live-stream metrics for the current reporting details.

Use those measures to check whether the broadcast is working for its intended audience. Concurrent viewers can show how many are present at once; watch time and retention offer context about viewing; traffic sources help explain how people found the stream. Availability is not engagement: a channel can broadcast continuously without viewers finding it useful. Pair platform metrics with the outcome the stream is meant to support, such as participation, product discovery, or visits to a relevant information page.

The choice is not simply “website or livestream.” If a continuous broadcast is right for the audience, you can run it locally or use cloud playout. A local setup must keep its encoding computer, internet connection, and stream configuration working continuously. A cloud service can remove the need to leave a computer running at home; it does not remove the need to choose appropriate content, follow YouTube’s rules, or assess whether viewers benefit.

So, are 24/7 livestreams the new websites?
They are better understood as a new kind of persistent programming, not as a substitute for the website’s role. A livestream can offer an ongoing show and real-time interaction; a website remains useful for structured information, browsing, transactions, and a controlled brand destination. Use an always-on stream when it gives viewers a real reason to tune in, and make the website the place they can reliably find what the stream cannot organize.
