You can watch Netflix from a compatible Lightning-equipped iPhone or iPad on an HDMI display with Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter. Netflix identifies adapter model numbers A1438 and A1621 as supported. The connection can still fail if the device, adapter, cable, or display cannot maintain Netflix’s protected-video connection. Apple rates the adapter for output up to 1080p HD, not 4K.
What you need
- A Lightning-equipped iPhone or iPad that supports wired video output. Netflix notes that some models do not; check the device’s Apple technical specifications under “Video Playback.”
- Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter. For Netflix support, check that its model number is A1438 or A1621.
- A standard HDMI cable; Apple sells it separately from the adapter.
- A TV, projector, monitor, or other display with an HDMI input.
- A Netflix account and internet access for streaming. Downloaded titles may be useful offline, but test them with your exact setup beforehand.
The adapter mirrors the device and carries video and audio. A Lightning charging cable alone does not carry HDMI video. A Lightning-to-VGA connection is not a suitable substitute for Netflix’s protected digital-video path.
How to connect Netflix to an HDMI display
- Turn on the TV, projector, or monitor and select the HDMI input you plan to use.
- Connect an HDMI cable to that input and to Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter.
- Plug the adapter into the iPhone or iPad’s Lightning port.
- Unlock the device if prompted, open the Netflix app, choose a title, and start playback.
- If menus appear but the video does not, check the adapter model and troubleshoot the protected HDMI connection below.
For an initial test, connect the adapter directly to the display. Add a receiver or other HDMI equipment only after direct playback works.
How to check whether the adapter is supported
On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings → General → About → Apple HDMI Adapter. Netflix identifies A1438 and A1621 as supported models. If neither appears, Netflix says the adapter is unsupported and it may be the cause of playback trouble. Marketplace claims that a generic adapter is “Netflix compatible” are not a substitute for Netflix’s model-number check. Netflix’s adapter guidance is at How to Cast or Mirror Netflix from Your Mobile Device.

Why Netflix may show a black screen
Protected video and HDCP
HDCP, or High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection, is a copy-protection handshake across the digital video path. Netflix playback can fail even when the phone’s home screen appears on the display: the menus are visible, but the protected movie or show is black, errors, or will not start. Audio without a picture can point to the same kind of video-path problem. Apple explains that protected video may require an HDCP-compatible connection in its Digital AV Adapter help.
Possible weak points include an unsupported adapter, a damaged cable or HDMI port, an older projector or monitor, or an HDMI splitter, switch, receiver, or capture device disrupting the protected connection. Netflix’s Lightning instructions emphasize supported adapter models; do not assume HDCP 2.2 is a universal requirement for every Lightning setup.

Try these fixes in order
- Confirm that the display is set to the HDMI input connected to the adapter.
- Disconnect and reconnect the adapter and cable, then try another HDMI port and cable.
- Remove splitters, switches, receivers, capture cards, and converters; connect directly to the display.
- Check Settings → General → About → Apple HDMI Adapter for model A1438 or A1621.
- Restart the iPhone or iPad and display. Update Netflix from the App Store and install available iOS or iPadOS updates.
- Test with another HDMI display. Older projectors, hotel televisions, and vehicle screens may reject the protected signal or restrict external inputs even if the adapter works elsewhere.
- If playback still fails, use Netflix on the display itself or on a dedicated streaming device.
Netflix’s current guidance says AirPlay and screen mirroring are no longer supported for Netflix playback from an iPhone or iPad. That is separate from the wired adapter route described here; wireless mirroring is not a workaround for a failed protected HDMI connection. See Netflix’s black-screen troubleshooting.
Can you watch downloaded Netflix titles over HDMI?
A download may let you watch without a live internet connection if Netflix permits that title to play on your device and through the supported display path. It is not guaranteed for every account, title, adapter, or display. Before travel, download the title and test playback through the exact HDMI setup; you can briefly disable internet access to check offline behavior.

Some downloaded videos may show black bars because of their format; that alone does not mean playback has failed. If a download will not play, Netflix’s guidance for error 30103 is to delete and download the title again: “Cannot play title. Please try again later” (30103). Netflix also says next-episode autoplay is not supported when using a video cable or adapter.
Picture, sound, and plan limits
Apple specifies up to 1080p HD output for the Lightning Digital AV Adapter. A 4K television can display that signal, but the adapter does not provide 4K Netflix playback. The display may upscale the image, and aspect ratio can produce black bars. Do not count on HDR, Dolby Vision, or a particular surround-sound format through this adapter; actual audio depends on the device, app, display, and connected equipment. Apple lists the adapter’s specifications and separate HDMI cable requirement on its product page.

Netflix says casting or mirroring availability is limited to Standard or Premium plans. That statement appears in its casting and mirroring guidance and should not be treated as a universal rule for every wired-playback, offline, title, and account scenario. A supported adapter is necessary, but may not be sufficient; test your account and setup before relying on it.

The adapter makes sense for occasional wired viewing when you already own a compatible Lightning device, have an HDMI display, and only need up to 1080p. It keeps playback on your phone or tablet and can be useful for a temporary projector connection. For regular viewing, a dedicated streamer avoids tying up the phone and offers a remote; it also makes more sense for 4K-capable setups. A smart TV’s Netflix app is another option if available.

| Option | Best suited to | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter | Occasional wired playback from a compatible Lightning iPhone or iPad | Up to 1080p; requires supported adapter and compatible protected HDMI path. Apple’s U.S. store listed it at $49 when checked around August 16, 2026; HDMI cable is separate. Apple product page |
| Roku Streaming Stick | A lower-cost dedicated streamer with a remote and broad app availability | Requires a suitable network for streaming. Roku’s U.S. pages showed the HD Streaming Stick at $29.99, Streaming Stick Plus at $39.99, and Streaming Stick 4K at $49.99 when checked around August 16, 2026; some pages showed limited-time promotions. The 4K model needs a compatible HDCP 2.2 HDMI input for 4K use. Roku players; Streaming Stick 4K |
| Apple TV 4K | Frequent viewing in an Apple household, especially with a 4K HDR display | Costs more and needs a network for streaming. Apple’s U.S. store listed Wi‑Fi/64GB at $199 and Wi‑Fi + Ethernet/128GB at $249 when checked; HDMI cable is separate. Apple TV 4K |
Prices and promotions can change. A dedicated streamer is not a replacement for phone-based offline playback where no network is available; choose according to whether you need a temporary wired connection or a permanent TV app experience.
USB-C iPhones and iPads are different
Do not buy a Lightning adapter for a device with USB-C, including iPhone 15 and newer models. Use a compatible USB-C video adapter or display connection instead, following Netflix’s guidance for the exact device and cable: Netflix device and adapter instructions. Its HDCP 2.2 guidance relates to relevant external-display troubleshooting and should not be generalized to every Lightning adapter setup.
