Its 49mm titanium case housed 2018-era Android Wear/Wear OS hardware, while its signature features delivered tournament scores and match alerts and offered timing tools for officials. In 2026, it is best understood as a distinctive piece of football and watch history, not a dependable modern smartwatch.
What was the Hublot Big Bang Referee?
Officially named the Big Bang Referee 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™, reference 400.NX.1100.RX, it was Hublot’s first connected watch. Hublot later described the Referee as its first connected model in its history of the Big Bang e. The consumer edition was limited to 2,018 pieces and launched in 2018 at about CHF 5,000; WatchTime reported CHF 4,900. That was a luxury-watch price, reflecting the Hublot design, titanium and sapphire construction, limited run, and FIFA association—not a promise of longer software support or better smartwatch capability.
The watch served two related audiences: match officials, for whom it offered match-timing functions, and fans or collectors, who could receive live tournament information and use World Cup-themed faces. Contemporary coverage said referees would wear it, but its alerts and timing tools did not themselves make officiating decisions.
How did it look and feel on the wrist?
The 49mm case is the first thing to understand about wearing the Referee. At roughly 13.9–14mm thick, it is large and conspicuous, with the imposing presence associated with Hublot’s Big Bang design. The satin-finished titanium case and bezel, sapphire crystal, lugs, crown, and pushers give it the outline of a substantial luxury sports watch. Its size is not merely visual: the case had to accommodate smartwatch components including GPS and NFC. It is likely to feel oversized or top-heavy on smaller wrists, and it can catch on clothing.

Under the crystal, though, it behaves unmistakably like a digital device. The 35.4mm, 400 × 400-pixel AMOLED touchscreen—about 287 pixels per inch in period coverage—responds to taps and swipes for faces, notifications, and apps. The contrast between the traditional watch exterior and a screen-based interface is central to the experience.
Straps and fit
The standard black lined-rubber strap could be replaced with a World Cup cuff-style strap or team-colored options associated with the 32 participating nations. Hublot used an interchangeable strap mechanism, but the original hands-on review found changing straps less intuitive than swapping a conventional watch strap, especially with the cuff-style buckle. Strap condition matters on a used example: rubber can harden, crack, or discolor, and the distinctive cuff hardware may be harder to replace than a standard strap.

What hardware and software did it use?
The Referee ran the 2018 generation of Google’s Android Wear/Wear OS platform. The platform was rebranded from Android Wear to Wear OS in 2018, so contemporary descriptions use both names. It should not be confused with today’s Wear OS watches or assumed to support current apps, services, or phone-pairing behavior.
| Component | Reported specification |
|---|---|
| Case | 49mm satin-finished titanium; about 13.9–14mm thick |
| Crystal and display | Sapphire crystal; 35.4mm, 400 × 400 AMOLED touchscreen, about 287ppi |
| Processor and memory | Intel Atom Z34XX dual-core processor, approximately 1.6GHz; 512MB RAM |
| Connectivity and sensors | GPS, NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, accelerometer, gyroscope, tilt/detector sensors, microphone, and vibration feedback |
| Battery and charging | About 410mAh; magnetic charging disc. Launch coverage reported about 1 hour 50 minutes for a full charge |
| Water resistance | Reported as 50m / 5 ATM when new |
These are reported launch-era specifications, not a condition report for any surviving watch. Period specification coverage is available from Wareable; its hands-on review discusses the screen, straps, football software, and battery experience.

How did the World Cup features work?
The tournament software gave the Referee a purpose beyond presenting ordinary phone notifications. Interactive watch faces surfaced match and tournament information, including participating nations and flags, a countdown to the next match, score, and match status. Period reporting described kickoff notifications about 15 minutes before a match, followed by live information such as goals, goal scorers, yellow and red cards, and substitutions. Key events could prompt vibration alerts. Wareable’s original review found the alerts timely during its test period; that is a report of performance during the 2018 tournament, not evidence that the service remains live.
Referee and chronometer apps
Dedicated Referee and Chronometer apps addressed match timing. The Referee app tracked the first and second halves, extra time, total match duration, and post-match timing information. The Chronometer was a branded stopwatch-style tool rather than a novel timing system.

- Please note that this protective film is made of flexible plastic. And it's intentionally made smaller than the screen for installation.
- Blue Light Filter: UV400 protection, anti-static, relieve the fatigue of eyes and help you sleep better.
- 4H hardness protects your screen from daily scratches, scrapes, and normal signs of wear.
- Self-healing technology enables the film to recover from minor scratches in 48 hours.
- Bubble-free, fingerprint-free, dust-resistant. No sticky residue when removed.
How it related to VAR and goal-line technology
The watch was part of Hublot’s broader role at the 2018 tournament and its association with match officials. It should not be mistaken for the goal-line or video assistant referee (VAR) systems: those were separate technologies. The Referee’s match information and timing functions did not independently determine whether a goal counted or whether a referee should change a decision.
What were battery life and everyday use like?
Battery life was about one day in period specifications and review experience. Wareable reported that heavy use of match alerts, GPS, and other smartwatch functions made it difficult to stretch beyond a day. That was an ordinary kind of endurance for the 2018 Wear OS category, but short by the standards many buyers expect from a smartwatch now. The reported full-charge time was about 1 hour 50 minutes using the magnetic charging disc; actual charging and runtime on an aged battery can differ substantially.

GPS, NFC, a microphone, and vibration broadened its everyday capabilities. Google Pay was advertised as a feature at the time, but historical NFC or payment support is no guarantee that payments work today. Similarly, the original watch was designed for Android and iOS compatibility at launch, not for every current phone, account, or Google service.

The World Cup data was tied to a specific event, so its clearest selling point was inherently time-limited. The watch may still offer basic timekeeping and, if its software and pairing cooperate, notifications or generic smartwatch functions. Whether it can complete setup, install or run apps, authenticate accounts, or make payments depends on the individual watch and the current phone and services involved. Hublot’s later Big Bang e is a separate model; its newer hardware or support claims do not establish identical compatibility for the Referee.
Battery aging is a major ownership risk for an eight-year-old electronic device. Charging hardware, replacement parts, service options, and strap availability may also be difficult to verify before purchase. Although contemporary coverage reported 50m / 5 ATM water resistance, that original rating is not assurance that an old, previously opened, or unserviced watch remains sealed. Seals and adhesives can deteriorate over time.
Who should consider buying one?
The Referee makes most sense for a Hublot enthusiast, watch collector, or FIFA memorabilia buyer who values the model’s design and link to the 2018 tournament. Its strongest case is as a limited, unusual Hublot artifact and an early luxury-brand smartwatch—not as a way to get dependable modern health tracking, long battery life, current payments, or guaranteed app support. A conventional current smartwatch will be a more practical choice for those everyday needs.
One secondary-market listing observed in August 2026 showed a used example at $5,795. That is a marketplace asking price, not a verified sale or an established market value; condition, completeness, and provenance can vary. The original launch price was about CHF 5,000, not a current retail price.
Quick Recap
What to check before buying a used Referee
- Confirm identity and provenance. Check that the reference is 400.NX.1100.RX and compare the serial number with the paperwork. Be alert to listings that confuse it with a mechanical Big Bang or the later Big Bang e.
- Ask for a working demonstration. See it boot, charge, pair with a phone, and complete setup. Test the touchscreen, crown and pushers, vibration, microphone, GPS, and NFC where possible. Ask whether the World Cup faces and apps remain installed, but do not assume their tournament data still functions.
- Assess the battery and charger. Ask how long it lasts from a full charge and whether it accepts a charge consistently. Confirm that the original magnetic charging disc is included or that a compatible replacement has been verified for this exact model.
- Inspect the physical condition. Look for display burn-in, dead pixels, delamination, touch defects, case damage, worn charging contacts, strap-release problems, and any sign of battery swelling. Check whether both straps, box, and papers are included.
- Verify service and water resistance. Ask whether the watch has been opened or serviced. For any intended water exposure, request recent pressure-test documentation from an authorized service provider; without it, do not rely on the original rating or swim with the watch.
- Protect the transaction. Prefer a seller who permits returns if pairing or setup fails on your current phone, and who can document the watch’s condition and provenance.
