The platform also logged fewer total hours than January, but February has three fewer days. Twitch remained the leading destination for gaming livestreams; the figures show slowing, post-pandemic momentum rather than a sudden collapse.
What the February number actually measures
The headline figure is total tracked watch time, not the number of individual people who used Twitch. It does not directly measure unique viewers, monthly active users, concurrent viewers, subscribers, revenue or creator earnings. A change in hours watched can reflect viewing duration, the amount creators broadcast, major events, or a combination of those factors.
StreamElements published the February report on March 21, 2023, drawing on measurement data from Rainmaker.gg. Secondary coverage rounded the total slightly differently, so 1.654 billion should be treated as approximate.

The daily figures are editorial calculations: January’s total divided by 31 days and February’s divided by 28. They do not erase the year-over-year decline, but they show why a month-to-month total-hours comparison is not a like-for-like measure of daily engagement.

Why February looked weaker
A shorter calendar month
February contains 28 days, compared with January’s 31. Even identical daily viewing would produce a smaller monthly total. February’s calculated daily average was actually higher than January’s, despite the lower aggregate.
Normalization after the pandemic surge
Lockdowns in 2020 and 2021 redirected time toward livestreaming and produced unusually high growth. By 2023, some of that exceptional viewing had normalized. GeekWire noted that Twitch still exceeded its pre-pandemic audience levels, meaning a decline from the 2022 comparison point did not place the service back where it started.

Events and release timing
Monthly watch time is sensitive to esports tournaments, game launches, creator events and unusually long broadcasts. A strong competition calendar can lift a game category, while a quiet period can depress the platform total without indicating a permanent change in demand.
Twitch remained the gaming livestreaming leader
Contemporary reporting continued to describe Twitch as the dominant platform for gaming livestreaming. That is a narrower and more defensible claim than saying Twitch led every form of live video. YouTube, TikTok, Facebook and regional services have substantial reach in sports, news, music, shopping, entertainment and social video. Platform comparisons also vary in their coverage and counting methods, so no precise universal market-share percentage is established here.

What viewers watched
- Just Chatting led Twitch categories with approximately 263 million hours watched.
- Valorant, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Apex Legends benefited from esports attention.
- Hogwarts Legacy was one of February’s strongest new releases, with approximately 71 million hours watched and about 50 million during its launch week in contemporary reporting.
- League of Legends, Grand Theft Auto V and Minecraft also ranked among notable categories.
Figures for individual games were rounded differently across reports and should not be treated as interchangeable unless they come from the same chart and methodology.
Kai Cenat shows how one creator can move the total
Kai Cenat’s month-long subathon generated approximately 43 million hours watched, making him February’s most-watched Twitch streamer in the reported rankings. That exceeded xQc’s previously reported monthly high of about 39 million hours in May 2021. Cenat’s broadcast volume—reported at more than 650 hours—was a major factor.

The episode is a reminder that platform-wide monthly data can be heavily influenced by a small number of enormous channels, subathons, esports events or creator comebacks. It says little by itself about discovery, retention or monetization for an ordinary or mid-sized streamer.

The report arrived amid Twitch layoffs, Emmett Shear’s announcement that he was leaving as CEO, and Dan Clancy’s move into the incoming CEO role. Amazon was also conducting broader workforce reductions. Those developments made a falling watch-time figure especially newsworthy, but the available reporting does not establish that February’s decline caused the layoffs or leadership change. They are best read as overlapping signs of strategic pressure.

What happened after February?
March 2023 produced approximately 1.556 billion Twitch hours watched, about 5% below February, according to the later StreamElements report. Even so, reported first-quarter 2023 watch time was less than 1% different from the fourth quarter of 2022 overall. The follow-up supports a picture of a very large platform searching for renewed growth, not an immediate collapse.
What this report can—and cannot—tell you
- It can show scale: Twitch still handled more than 1.6 billion hours in one month.
- It can show momentum: February was down year over year and below January in total hours.
- It cannot count people: watch time is not a unique-user total.
- It cannot prove revenue impact: advertising, subscriptions, Bits, sponsorships and creator economics require separate data.
- It cannot define every livestream market: the strongest supported leadership claim is Twitch’s position in gaming livestreaming.
The most accurate reading is therefore “weaker than the exceptional February 2022 baseline, but still operating at enormous scale.” Twitch’s central challenge was slowing growth and stronger competition, not an immediate loss of leadership in gaming.
