What “coasting stage” meant
In a report published May 9, 2022, People cited an unnamed source who described Burton and Gustin as having “grown apart,” said they had been in a “coasting stage” for a while, and characterized the marriage as “just coexisting.” Fox News summarized the report the next day. Because the account came from an unnamed source, it should not be treated as a confirmed explanation from the couple.
What Steve Burton said publicly
After Gustin announced that she was pregnant, Burton said in an Instagram Story, reproduced in Fox News’s May 2022 report, that they were separated and that the expected child was not his. He also said they were co-parenting their three children and asked for privacy:
“I wanted to clear something up. Sheree and I are separated. She recently announced that she’s expecting her 4th child. The child is not mine.”

These are Burton’s words as quoted by Fox News; the outlet’s report reproduced the Instagram Story rather than linking to an independently available original post.
