Several novels and short stories make partial visits or connections, while many more only mention Derry. That distinction matters: a reference to the town does not make an entire story a Derry story.
What counts as a story set in Derry?
Derry is a recurring fictional town in King’s work. A compiled reference identifies “The Bird and the Album” as its first appearance and IT (1986) as the first work to render the town fully as a setting. The list below separates stories with a substantial or partial setting connection from works that are identified only as mentioning Derry. It is a practical reading guide, not a certified exhaustive index of every reference in King’s continuing canon.
The main Derry stories and visits
| Work | Form and year | Derry connection |
|---|---|---|
| IT | Novel, 1986 | The central, fully developed Derry setting and the best starting point for its mythology. |
| Insomnia | Novel, 1994 | A substantial return to Derry, with links to King’s wider fictional universe. |
| Bag of Bones | Novel, 1998 | Partly set in Derry, according to the compiled reference; the available sources do not establish the extent of the setting. |
| “The Road Virus Heads North” | Short story, 1999 | A partial Derry setting. The story appears in Everything’s Eventual. |
| Dreamcatcher | Novel, 2001 | Revisits Derry and its post-IT landscape. |
| 11/22/63 | Novel, 2011 | Includes a partial visit and encounters connecting the novel to IT. |
| “Secret Window, Secret Garden” | Novella, 1990 | Included in the compiled reference’s Derry-set list; the sources here do not establish how substantial the connection is. |
| “Fair Extension” | Novella, 2010 | Included in the compiled reference’s Derry-set list; the sources here do not establish how substantial the connection is. |
King’s official Dark Tower connections page specifically confirms Derry links for IT, Insomnia, Dreamcatcher, 11/22/63, and “The Road Virus Heads North.” It also lists Derry links for “Autopsy Room Four” and Hearts in Atlantis, supporting the distinction between a connection to Derry and a story primarily set there.
Works that mention Derry
The compiled reference lists the following works as referring to Derry rather than establishing them as Derry-set stories:

- The Running Man, The Body, and Pet Sematary

- Hearts in Atlantis and Storm of the Century
- The Dark Tower VII, Lisey’s Story, and “Mute”
- Under the Dome, Full Dark, No Stars, Gwendy’s Final Task, and You Like It Darker
This is a discovery list, not evidence that Derry is a meaningful setting throughout each work. The official connections page independently confirms Derry appearances or links for “Autopsy Room Four” and Hearts in Atlantis.
Where to start, and what to read next
- Begin with IT. It gives Derry its defining mythology and most substantial treatment.
- Read Insomnia next. It is another major Derry-centered story and connects to King’s wider fictional universe.
- Continue with Dreamcatcher and 11/22/63. Both provide later visits and cross-references.
- Add the shorter or partial connections as extras. For the remaining titles, check the individual work rather than assuming a Derry mention means the story is primarily set there.
This order is based on how central Derry is to each work, not on publication order or a required internal chronology.

Derry’s place in King’s wider world
The compiled reference describes Derry as a fictional town in Maine but notes competing accounts of its real-world inspiration and placement. The sources do not establish a precise real-world map location, so it is safer to treat Derry as a fictional Maine setting rather than assign it a specific geographic counterpart.
An October 26, 2025 CinemaBlend interview offers a separate adaptation-related note. Brad Caleb Kane, co-showrunner of IT: Welcome to Derry, said that 11/22/63 did not come up in discussions, while Insomnia did, and that the team discussed weaving elements of it into the series. That comment describes development discussions; by itself, it does not determine which books belong on a Derry bibliography or what ultimately appears on screen.

Sources and scope
The official works list, bibliography, and novels and novellas listing help verify King’s titles and categories. The setting classifications above rely in part on the compiled Derry reference, which is not an authoritative exhaustive catalogue. King’s official site does not offer a single consolidated index of every work connected with the town; the guide therefore focuses on the best-established central works and selected partial or mention-only connections.
