Stephen Colbert’s Cancellation and Jimmy Kimmel’s Preemption: What the Evidence Shows

Stephen Colbert’s show ended permanently after its 2025–26 season; Jimmy Kimmel’s was temporarily taken off ABC’s schedule and returned days later. Both episodes unfolded amid political pressure, but the documented timeline does not prove that pressure caused CBS to cancel Colbert or that the government directed ABC’s decision.

How were the Colbert and Kimmel cases different?

They are connected by concern about political pressure on broadcasters, but they were not the same kind of action. CBS ended The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and retired the franchise. ABC preempted Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely, then Disney announced its return. The distinction matters: one program ended; the other came back.

Question Stephen Colbert Jimmy Kimmel
What happened? CBS announced on July 17, 2025, that The Late Show would end after the 2025–26 season and that the franchise would be retired. The final broadcast aired May 21, 2026. CBS Studios’ release listing; CBS News ABC preempted the program indefinitely in September 2025; Disney announced on September 22 that it would return the following night. ABC News; CBS News
What reason did the company give? CBS called the cancellation “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.” That is the network’s stated rationale, not an independently established finding about its motives. Associated Press Disney said the pause followed Kimmel’s remarks and cited a desire to avoid inflaming a tense moment. On announcing the return, the company said it had had “thoughtful conversations with Jimmy” and decided to bring the show back. CBS News
What pressure surrounded the decision? Colbert had criticized Paramount’s settlement of Trump’s lawsuit over a 60 Minutes interview several days before CBS’s announcement. The sequence drew scrutiny, but timing alone does not establish a cause. Associated Press FCC Chairman Brendan Carr publicly criticized Kimmel’s remarks and discussed possible regulatory remedies before ABC’s preemption. Nexstar and Sinclair also pulled the program from stations they controlled. CBS News; Associated Press

Why was Stephen Colbert’s show canceled?

CBS announced the decision on July 17, 2025, saying the show would conclude with the 2025–26 season. The franchise ended with its final episode on May 21, 2026. CBS’s public explanation was financial: it described the choice as “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.” CBS Studios’ release listing; Associated Press; Associated Press, May 21, 2026

The timing prompted questions. On July 2, Paramount Global agreed to settle Donald Trump’s lawsuit concerning the editing of a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris. Colbert criticized the settlement; CBS announced the show’s end several days later. Those events establish context and chronology, not that the settlement or political pressure caused the cancellation. No independently verified audience, revenue, or cost figure in the documented material resolves the question.

Was Jimmy Kimmel canceled or suspended?

ABC preempted Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely in September 2025; it did not announce that the show was permanently canceled. The immediate context was Kimmel’s September 15 monologue about Charlie Kirk’s killing and the political reaction to it. CBS News reported that Kimmel used the phrase “MAGA gang” and criticized President Trump’s response; those are the report’s account of Kimmel’s remarks, not proof of the interpretation expressed in them. CBS News

Before ABC’s move, Carr had criticized Kimmel’s remarks and discussed a possible suspension. CBS News quoted Carr saying, “We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” in comments about potential FCC remedies. Nexstar and Sinclair also preempted the program on stations they controlled. These details show that the preemption occurred amid public and regulatory pressure; they do not, by themselves, establish that the government ordered ABC to act. CBS News; ABC News

When did the show return?

On September 22, Disney said the program would return Tuesday, September 23, after conversations with Kimmel. Disney also described some of his comments as ill-timed and insensitive and said it wanted to avoid inflaming a tense moment. At the time of the announcement, some Sinclair stations said they would continue preempting the show. That station-level decision was distinct from Disney’s decision to restore the program to ABC’s schedule. CBS News

Did political pressure cause either decision?

The strongest evidence-based answer is that pressure is part of the documented context, but the available facts do not establish a proven causal link in either case. For Colbert, the proximity of his criticism of Paramount’s settlement to CBS’s cancellation announcement invites scrutiny, while CBS’s stated reason was financial. For Kimmel, Carr’s public comments and station-group preemptions preceded ABC’s action, and Disney later reversed course. Sequence and proximity justify questions; they are not, on their own, proof of an order or motive.

  • Established: CBS announced Colbert’s show would end and gave a financial rationale; the franchise concluded in May 2026.
  • Established: Carr criticized Kimmel’s remarks and discussed possible FCC remedies; ABC preempted the show, and Disney later returned it.
  • Not established by these events alone: that Trump or the federal government ordered CBS to cancel Colbert, that political pressure was the actual cause of CBS’s decision, or that ABC acted at the government’s direction.

In the Kimmel case, Nexstar reportedly denied prior government contact. That denial is relevant to claims about coordination, but it does not settle every question about the motivations of ABC, Disney, or individual station groups. Associated Press

What does the later Talarico interview dispute show?

In February 2026, an interview with Texas representative James Talarico appeared on The Late Show’s YouTube channel rather than being broadcast. CBS and Colbert publicly described the legal guidance and events differently. That later dispute can be considered on its own terms, but it does not establish why CBS made the 2025 cancellation decision. TIME
