Steal has a propulsive premise and a compelling Sophie Turner performance, but calling it Prime Video’s best show in years goes further than the available critical case supports. The six-episode heist thriller earns praise for its opening momentum and its lead, while a more mixed review finds that the story loses clarity and drive after the robbery.
What is Steal about?
Amazon describes Steal as a six-episode crime thriller set at Lochmill Capital, a pension-fund investment company. Sophie Turner plays Zara, an office worker whose day is upended when armed thieves invade the workplace and force her and her friend Luke to carry out their demands. Investigators then try to establish who stole from pension holders and why. The series listing credits Sotiris Nikias as creator and also stars Jacob Fortune-Lloyd as DCI Rhys and Archie Madekwe as Luke.

That setup gives the show two engines: the immediate danger of a workplace robbery and the wider question of what has happened to the money entrusted to the company. The financial setting distinguishes Steal from a conventional cash-grab thriller, though whether the series fully develops that premise is a point of disagreement among reviewers.
Does Sophie Turner carry the thriller?
Turner’s performance is the clearest point of agreement in the reviews considered here. Lucy Mangan, writing for The Guardian, sees Zara as resilient and believable under pressure, describing her as “a cornered terrier rather than a superhero” and saying viewers “long for her to triumph.” Bhavna Agarwal of India Today likewise praises Turner for giving Zara grounded vulnerability and carrying the drama.

That shared praise matters because Zara is the audience’s anchor through a story built on danger, uncertainty and shifting loyalties. The critics’ positive assessments of Turner do not, however, amount to a consensus that the surrounding writing is equally strong.
Do the twists keep the story moving?
Mangan’s Guardian review is enthusiastic about the show’s momentum. She calls it a “breathless and hugely entertaining financial heist show” and argues that the opening robbery quickly opens into a story of changing alliances. In her reading, Steal keeps its narrative pace while widening its focus beyond the crime itself.

Agarwal’s India Today review offers the counterargument: the series loses momentum after its central heist. She points to uneven pacing, unclear motives, underdeveloped supporting characters and plotting that does not make enough of the financial-crime premise. On that account, the twists do not consistently sustain the tension created by the opening.
The practical verdict is mixed rather than a simple yes or no: the premise and Turner’s performance give the series a strong start, but viewers looking for tightly explained motives and consistently accelerating suspense may find the later storytelling less satisfying.

How central are the pension and wealth themes?
Mangan interprets the thriller as a story about wealth concentration and the use of other people’s money in finance. She writes that “the love of money is the root of all evil” becomes a meditation within the series. That is the Guardian critic’s reading of the show, not a neutral description of its message.
Agarwal’s reservations suggest a different measure of the same material: she argues that the plot does not fully capitalize on its financial-crime premise. Together, the reviews point to a potentially distinctive theme whose impact depends on how much weight a viewer gives the series’ broader ideas versus the clarity and pace of its conspiracy plot.

Is Steal Prime Video’s best show in years?
The headline’s superlative is not established by the available evidence. The positive case is substantial but specific: Mangan praises the show’s breathless entertainment, its shifting alliances and Turner’s credible lead. The reservation is just as specific: Agarwal finds the post-heist story uneven and its motives and supporting characters insufficiently developed.
Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 77% average Tomatometer from 35 reviews and a 67% Popcornmeter from more than 250 ratings when checked for this article. Those platform aggregates are snapshots that can change; they are not a definitive ranking or proof that Steal is Prime Video’s best series in years. They sit comfortably with a mixed overall picture: a show with a strong central performance and a lively hook, but not an undisputed triumph.
