This ranking covers Lucasfilm’s named narrative animated series and anthologies: The Clone Wars, Rebels, Resistance, The Bad Batch, Tales of the Jedi, Tales of the Empire, Tales of the Underworld, Young Jedi Adventures, and Visions. It does not rank vintage animation, the 2003 micro-series, LEGO shorts and specials, or other short-form projects. Those are genuine Star Wars animation, but their formats and catalogs are not directly comparable to full television series.

There is no official quality order for Star Wars animation. This is an editorial ranking based on narrative ambition, character development, visual identity, accessibility, pacing, format, and intended audience. 1. The Clone Wars: the essential long-form epic
Why it ranks first
Lucasfilm describes The Clone Wars as its first CG 3D animated Star Wars series and the franchise’s longest-running series, with seven seasons. Set between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, it follows Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Ahsoka Tano, and a broad ensemble through the conflict.

Its scale is the decisive advantage. The series can move from military campaigns to political pressure, personal loyalty, and the experience of ordinary soldiers. Recurring characters have room to change, and Ahsoka’s presence gives the prequel era a perspective that the films could not develop at the same length.
Who should start here
Choose it if you want the fullest account of the Clone Wars and are willing to make a long commitment. The seven-season run is also the reason some newcomers hesitate: individual arcs vary in tone and not every episode is built as a major plot advance.
2. Rebels: the most balanced character adventure
Why it ranks here
Rebels debuted in 2014 and follows a more concentrated group than The Clone Wars. Its ensemble includes Sabine Wren, Ezra Bridger, and Hera Syndulla, characters who later appeared in live-action Star Wars. That continuity gives the series unusual importance without making its appeal depend entirely on cameos.
The show’s strength is the way a found-family crew grows together while the larger conflict comes into focus. It is easier to approach than a seven-season anthology-like war series, yet it still develops long-running relationships and escalating stakes.

Best fit and trade-off
Rebels is the best first choice for viewers who want a clear central cast, a manageable entry point, and a story that becomes more ambitious over time. Its early episodes use a lighter adventure tone, so viewers seeking immediate prequel-era intensity may need patience.
3. The Bad Batch: the aftermath of the Republic’s fall
What makes it distinctive
The Bad Batch premiered in 2021 and follows genetically distinct Clone Force 99 through the galaxy’s transition immediately after the Clone Wars. The group originated in a storyline from The Clone Wars, making this series a direct continuation of that clone-era foundation.

Its smaller core ensemble creates a different rhythm from the sprawling war series. Instead of presenting the entire conflict, it concentrates on survival, changing institutions, and what happens to soldiers when the system that created them is replaced.
When to watch it
It is a strong choice after The Clone Wars, especially if the clone troopers’ fate is the part of that era that interests you most. Starting here is possible, but the emotional and political context lands better when you already know the Republic-era story.
4. Visions: the boldest experiment
Why it earns a high place
Visions is an anthology created through animation studios from around the world, including studios in Japan, South Africa, Spain, Ireland, Chile, the United Kingdom, South Korea, France, and India. That international production model gives it a visual and tonal range unlike Lucasfilm’s continuous in-house narrative series.
Because the episodes are separate stories, you can sample the project without committing to a chronology or a multi-season plot. Its value is concentrated in interpretation: different artists can use Star Wars imagery, themes, and mythology without having to serve one ongoing cast.
Who should choose it
Watch Visions first if animation style and imaginative stand-alone storytelling matter more to you than a single canon timeline. It ranks below the major serialized dramas only because its anthology design does not deliver the same cumulative character development.
5. Tales of the Jedi: precise character studies
Format and focus
Lucasfilm describes Tales of the Jedi as a six-part anthology created by Dave Filoni, with stories centered on Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku. The episodes are designed as concentrated glimpses rather than a continuous campaign with a large supporting cast.

That compactness is its advantage. The anthology can isolate a formative choice, a relationship, or a turning point and let the idea carry the episode. It is one of the quickest ways to deepen your understanding of two major prequel-era characters.
Its place in the ranking
It sits below the serialized shows because six short stories cannot provide their same breadth, but it is more focused than a conventional side story. View it after becoming familiar with the prequel era, or use it as a short return visit when you do not want a full season.
6. Tales of the Empire: another compact anthology lens
Tales of the Empire continues the short-form anthology approach with different characters and eras. Its purpose is not to recreate the structure of The Clone Wars or Rebels; it offers concentrated character stories that can be watched in small sessions.
The ranking reflects that format rather than a claim that every episode should be judged by the same scale as a serialized drama. Choose it when you want a brief, character-centered expansion of the galaxy and already understand that the anthology will jump between situations instead of building one uninterrupted plot.
7. Tales of the Underworld: short stories across the galaxy
Debuting in 2025, Tales of the Underworld extends the same anthology family with different characters and eras. Like the other Tales productions, it is best approached as a set of focused studies rather than a compressed version of a long-running adventure.
Its position acknowledges the appeal of short viewing sessions while recognizing the structural limit: an anthology can suggest a larger history, but it cannot spend dozens of episodes tracking how a central group changes. Put it high on your list if variety and concentrated episodes matter more than one continuous narrative.

8. Resistance: a different sequel-era viewpoint
Setting and premise
Resistance debuted in 2018 and centers on young pilot Kazuda Xiono, a remote platform, and a community of racing pilots. Official chronology places the series across the beginning of the sequel-film era: it starts before The Force Awakens and continues beyond it.
This setting separates it from Jedi-centered and clone-centered shows. The story texture comes from pilots, mechanics, competition, and life on an isolated platform rather than from a military campaign or a Jedi apprenticeship.
Who it serves
Choose Resistance if you want sequel-era context and a youthful aviation adventure. It ranks below the other series here because its intended tone and structure are narrower than the major war dramas, not because a younger-skewing show should be evaluated as a failed adult drama.

Purpose and audience
Young Jedi Adventures is the first Star Wars animated series made for a preschool audience. It debuted on May 4, 2023, on Disney+ and Disney Junior, and is set 200 years before The Phantom Menace during the High Republic era.
Its ranking is audience-specific. For a preschool child meeting Star Wars for the first time, its accessibility is a strength, not a compromise. For an adult seeking political tragedy, complex continuity, or long-form character arcs, the same design will feel too simple.
Executive producer James Waugh captured that inclusive aim by saying, “I truly believe there’s a Star Wars for everyone, and every age.” That is the fairest way to judge this series: by whether it introduces the universe safely and clearly to its intended viewers.

Where the excluded animation fits
The official Star Wars viewing guide separates animated series from vintage productions, shorts, specials, and LEGO projects. The 2003 Clone Wars micro-series belongs to a different short-form tradition, while LEGO stories are built around their own comic format. Neither should be quietly folded into a ranking of full narrative television series.
Maul – Shadow Lord appears among animated offerings in the 2026 viewing guide, but the material available for this ranking does not establish enough comparable series detail to place it responsibly beside completed multi-season shows and named anthologies. Check the current official guide for its status and viewing information.
Which Star Wars animated series should you watch first?
If you want one definitive starting point
Start with The Clone Wars if you want the broadest prequel-era story and can accept seven seasons.
If you want a shorter serialized commitment
