Yes. The missing three-foot model of the USS Enterprise from the original Star Trek pilot was found and returned to Gene Roddenberry’s son, Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, in April 2024. It is not the larger Enterprise model displayed by the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum: the two models had different roles in the show’s production.
Which Enterprise model was found?
The recovered object is a physical model about three feet (0.91 meters) long. The Associated Press reported that it was used in the original pilot and the opening credits of the television series. It later went missing after Gene Roddenberry lent it to the makers of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, released in 1979. The available reporting does not establish exactly how it left their possession or why it disappeared. (Associated Press, 2024)
Is it the Enterprise model at the Smithsonian?
No. The recovered model and the Smithsonian’s Enterprise are separate objects. The smaller model served as a prototype for the approximately 11-foot (about 3-meter) model used to film the series’ episodes. Paramount donated the larger model to the Smithsonian in 1974. How was the missing model found?
The model appeared for sale on eBay in fall 2023. Its sellers took down the listing and contacted Heritage Auctions. Heritage authenticated the object and helped arrange its return to Rod Roddenberry in April 2024, according to the Associated Press. (Associated Press, 2024)

What happened after its return?
At the time of the return, Rod Roddenberry said he hoped the model would be restored and eventually shown to the public. The 2024 report does not confirm whether restoration took place or whether the model is currently on public display, so its present condition and location remain unverified here. No sale is reported. Heritage Auctions executive vice president Joe Maddalena estimated that it could fetch more than $1 million at auction, but that was an estimate—not a sale price or a formal appraisal. Heritage’s role in authenticating and returning the model does not establish that it was auctioned. (Associated Press, 2024)
