Verdict: Squid Game Season 3 delivers definitive closure, inventive final-game reversals and a genuinely affecting choice for Gi-hun, Jun-hee and her baby. It is less exact as social satire than Season 1, however, and its broader claims about humanity can feel thinner than the original class critique. Season 3 premiered on 27 June 2025, is streaming on Netflix, and contains major spoilers below.
What Season 3 is trying to finish
The third season begins after Gi-hun’s failed rebellion, with the Front Man still controlling the competition. Its central question is no longer simply whether Gi-hun can survive. It is whether he can become someone willing to protect a future he will never personally enjoy.
Creator, writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk describes the season as being about “Gi-hun’s transformation, and how he overcomes what stands in his way.” He also says the characters have “the responsibility and duty to try everything that we can in our power to leave a better world for the future generation.” Those statements explain why the finale gives its moral weight to an infant rather than to another victorious adult.
Who wins Squid Game Season 3?
Jun-hee’s baby, Player 222, wins the final contest. The child is carried through the game under Jun-hee’s number after her death and ultimately claims the 4.56 billion won prize.

How Jun-hee dies
Jun-hee dies earlier during Jump Rope. She steps from the platform to prevent Gi-hun from being trapped on the wrong side, making a choice that keeps him in the game but costs her life. The baby remains the contestant identified as Player 222.
What happens to Gi-hun?
In Sky Squid Game, the last contest is played across square, triangle and circle towers. Gi-hun protects the infant and then chooses an action that ends his own life, allowing the baby to survive and win. So yes, Gi-hun dies in the final season.

Why the baby matters
The baby is not a surprise replacement hero so much as the season’s argument made visible. An infant cannot understand debt, status or the rules, yet becomes the person the adults must decide whether to protect. Hwang says that having the baby win was “in line with the meaning of Squid Game.”
That choice turns Gi-hun’s final act into a test of whether moral responsibility can outlast the people who exercise it. The ending is hopeful not because the violence has stopped—the season has shown the opposite—but because Gi-hun refuses to treat another life as expendable even when survival would be easier.

Is the finale earned or merely shocking?
The finale works best when it stays close to Gi-hun, Jun-hee and the baby. Jun-hee’s decision gives the final game an immediate personal cost, while Gi-hun’s sacrifice completes the transformation the season has been building toward. The reversal that makes the infant the winner is emotionally legible because the story has reduced the stakes to one defenseless life.
The surrounding mythology is less consistently focused. The Front Man survives, leaves the baby’s winnings with Jun-ho, and remains a disturbing reminder that the system can persist beyond any single game. A final Los Angeles scene shows a mysterious recruiter playing ddakji, extending the show’s unease without reopening the completed story.

Season 3 compared with Season 1
| Measure | Season 1 | Season 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Social critique | Highly focused capitalist satire built around debt, inequality and commodified survival. | Broadens toward a moral critique of humanity; the argument is less precise. |
| Game design | Memorable rules establish the show’s central tension. | Deadlier games and several strong reversals drive the suspense. |
| Gi-hun’s arc | Introduces a desperate survivor confronting the system. | Completes his transformation through a deliberate sacrifice. |
| Supporting characters | Several contestants receive substantial emotional and social definition. | The strongest emotional focus is concentrated on Gi-hun, Jun-hee and the baby. |
| Ending | Leaves the larger conflict open. | Provides definitive closure while retaining an unsettling final image. |
Shirley Li’s 27 June 2025 review in The Atlantic makes the sharpest case against the season’s thematic expansion. She praises the more lethal games and the pressure placed on Gi-hun, but argues that the VIPs’ enlarged role reveals a weakness: “Rather than deepen the capitalist satire that initially made it a phenomenon, Squid Game tries to critique humanity writ large—and delivers shallow thrills instead.” That is a critical judgment, not a settled fact, but it identifies the season’s main trade-off: a more universal moral fable in exchange for some of Season 1’s political precision.

Does the Front Man get punished?
No. The Front Man survives and hands the winnings to Jun-ho. His survival emphasizes that Gi-hun’s sacrifice changes the fate of the baby, not necessarily the machinery that created the contest.

What does the Los Angeles scene mean?
The closing Los Angeles sequence shows a mysterious recruiter playing ddakji. It functions as an unsettling coda, suggesting that the appetite for these games is not confined to one location, while leaving the completed Korean storyline intact.
Is there a Season 4?
No. Netflix Tudum reports that Hwang confirmed Episode 6 as the definitive, planned series finale. The Los Angeles scene is not an announcement of a planned Season 4.
Where to stream Squid Game Season 3
Season 3 is streaming on Netflix, alongside Seasons 1 and 2. Netflix’s corporate guide dated 27 June 2025 identifies it as the third and final season.
How big was the launch?
A July 2025 Movistar Plus media summary, citing Netflix viewing data, reported 60.1 million views and a No. 1 debut in all 93 countries tracked by Netflix. Those are time-sensitive launch figures, not a permanent audience rating or a measure of unanimous approval.

Final assessment
Squid Game Season 3 is a purposeful, uneven finale. Its games supply the expected brutality and reversals, but its lasting power comes from the simple image of Gi-hun choosing a child’s future over his own life. Viewers looking for another tightly targeted indictment of capitalism may find the season’s humanity-wide allegory too broad. Viewers invested in Gi-hun’s journey will find a clear ending, and the baby’s victory gives the series a fragile form of hope without pretending the world has become safe.
