Springsteen on Broadway reversed its initial policy and said it would admit ticket holders fully vaccinated with an FDA- or WHO-approved vaccine, including AstraZeneca-Oxford. The Guardian added the change in an update on June 21, 2021, ahead of the show’s scheduled June 26 reopening at the St. James Theatre.
Why AstraZeneca recipients were initially excluded
The Guardian reported on June 18, 2021, that the show’s initial admission rule covered the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna two-dose vaccines and the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Because the rule was described as limited to vaccines authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration, AstraZeneca-Oxford recipients were left out. Jujamcyn said the restriction had been imposed “at the direction of New York state.” The Guardian’s report
What changed in the admission policy
Jujamcyn later said it would admit ticket holders “who are fully vaccinated with an FDA or WHO approved vaccine.” The World Health Organization had approved AstraZeneca-Oxford, so the revised criterion included its recipients. The Guardian said the change followed updated guidance from state health officials and noted that it added the reversal in a June 21 update. The report does not name an individual who announced the change, and it does not establish that Springsteen personally made the decision.
How the later Broadway-wide rule differed
On July 30, 2021, The Broadway League announced a separate policy for audiences, performers, backstage crew and theatre staff at all 41 New York City Broadway theatres, with the requirements applying to performances through October 2021. Its audience rule accepted FDA- or WHO-authorized vaccines and defined fully vaccinated as at least 14 days after the second dose of a two-dose vaccine, or at least 14 days after a single-dose vaccine. This was a later, Broadway-wide announcement—not the wording of Springsteen on Broadway’s initial June rule. The Broadway League’s July 30 announcement
