Written and directed by Alberto Mielgo, it was released alongside the game’s 2025 gameplay reveal and serves as part of the story world Bungie said would extend beyond the game itself. Marathon later launched worldwide on March 5, 2026.
What the Marathon short film is
Watch the official Marathon reveal cinematic short (the video listing is from April 12, 2025). The animated film introduces Runners drawn to the lost colony of Tau Ceti IV, where the pursuit of fortune and answers unfolds amid danger and repeated deaths. PC Gamer described it as an eight-minute animation; that is the outlet’s runtime report, rather than an official runtime specification. PC Gamer’s April 12, 2025 report also praised the film, an individual critical response rather than a measure of universal opinion.
The official video description frames Marathon as a team-based extraction shooter: players choose a Runner and scavenge Tau Ceti IV for fortune, power, and answers to the colony’s secrets. The short presents that setting through cinematic animation and character moments, rather than showing the playable systems of an extraction shooter. The official video listing includes its credits and premise.
Who made it
Alberto Mielgo wrote and directed the short. Bungie’s reveal page connects him to “The Witness” and “Jibaro,” episodes of Love, Death & Robots. His role here is specific to the cinematic; Bungie does not credit him with directing or designing the full game.

Why the short matters to Marathon’s storytelling
Bungie described the film as one way the game’s stories could reach beyond in-game events. In its April 12, 2025 gameplay reveal showcase, the studio said its goal was for each season to bring new mysteries and stories for players to explore. It described some storytelling as happening through community events, missions, and in-world collectibles, and some beyond the game, “like with our recent ARG and today’s cinematic short.” Bungie’s gameplay reveal showcase makes the short’s narrative role explicit: it is more than a generic advertisement, though it is not gameplay footage.
