Bungie’s Marathon launched on March 5, 2026, for Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with cross-play and cross-save. It is a new game in the Marathon universe—not a Destiny sequel, and not a remake or direct sequel to the original Marathon trilogy. Bungie’s September 2026 roadmap outlines further changes through March 2027, but those are plans rather than features already delivered.
What is Marathon?
Marathon is a science-fiction extraction shooter set on Tau Ceti IV. Players take the role of Runners: bio-cybernetic mercenaries who explore persistent zones alone or in crews, seeking to survive and get out with what they find. Bungie describes the launched game as a high-risk PvEvP experience, where players face both environmental threats and other players.
The setting connects the game to Bungie’s original Marathon trilogy, but the relationship is not a remake or a direct continuation of those games. It is a new entry in the same fictional world. “Follow-up to Destiny” describes Bungie’s work after Destiny; it does not mean Marathon continues Destiny’s story.
When did Marathon launch, and where can you play it?
Marathon launched on March 5, 2026. Bungie announced availability on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with cross-play and cross-save. The September 23, 2025 date once announced for release was an earlier target, not the launch date.

Bungie’s launch announcement confirms cross-play and cross-save. Its announcement does not specify further platform distinctions or conditions for those features.
How Marathon’s plans changed
April 2025: gameplay reveal
Bungie showed Marathon gameplay on April 12, 2025, introducing its Runners, combat, and solo and crew play. The showcase announced a September 23, 2025 release target and a closed alpha planned for April 23 through May 4. Those dates were part of the original announcement, not the final release schedule.

June 2025: release delayed
On June 17, 2025, Bungie delayed the planned September release after considering feedback from the reveal and alpha. The studio said it needed more time to improve survival under pressure, the game’s mysteries and lore, raid-like endgame challenges, and its first-person combat. It also named more engaging AI, rewarding runs and dynamic events, environmental storytelling, solo and duo play, and proximity chat as areas of focus.
March 2026: launch
Bungie released the game on March 5, 2026. That launch date replaced the original September 2025 target.

September 2026: plans through March 2027
On September 24, 2026, Bungie described a forward plan that includes a Nightfall Refresh in October, Symbiosis in December, and a larger evolution in March. The stated direction is to connect permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences while adding onboarding, deeper shell progression, focused questlines and narrative, alien enemies, and a new zone. These items are announced development plans; the roadmap does not establish that they have already shipped.
What Bungie says it wants Marathon to become
The launched game centers on tense PvEvP extraction, but Bungie says it wants to offer lower-pressure ways to enter its world as well. Its September 2026 direction connects PvE, PvP, and PvEvP activities and calls for more approachable onboarding, alongside deeper Runner-shell progression and stronger narrative focus. That describes the intended evolution, not a guarantee that every planned activity or feature is currently available.

Runners are bio-cybernetic mercenaries whose consciousness can be uploaded into another shell after death, according to Bungie’s description. The premise gives the game a way to frame repeated runs and different shells within its fiction.

Bungie documented a Collector’s Edition with a 1/6-scale Thief Runner Shell statue, a collectible miniature WEAVEworm, an embroidered patch, postcards, digital rewards, and additional items.
