Spotify’s “Super Premium” Lossless Audio Explained: What Actually Launched

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Spotify did confirm plans for a higher-priced “Super Premium” concept in November 2024—but lossless audio ultimately arrived as a feature of regular Premium, not as a clearly separate Super Premium-only plan.

Spotify began rolling out Lossless in September 2025, with playback of up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. The feature expanded to Premium subscribers in all eligible markets by October 2025, although availability remains market-dependent. Spotify’s 2026 materials discuss paid add-ons and premium features for highly engaged users, but they do not establish that a separate lossless “Super Premium” tier currently exists.

The short version

The headline “Spotify confirms Super Premium lossless audio at last” is partly right historically but misleading as a description of Spotify’s current product.

  • November 2024: Spotify CEO Daniel Ek confirmed that the company was working on a higher-priced “Super Premium” tier with better audio quality.
  • At that time: Spotify had not announced a launch date, price, or final bitrate.
  • September 2025: Spotify officially began rolling out Lossless audio to ordinary Premium subscribers.
  • October 2025: Spotify said Lossless was available to Premium users in all eligible markets.
  • Current interpretation: Lossless is a Premium feature where supported. There is no confirmed evidence in the available official 2026 materials that a separately named Super Premium lossless plan has launched.

That distinction matters. Spotify’s long-delayed HiFi proposal appears to have evolved into a feature delivered through Premium rather than a clearly separate subscription tier.

What Spotify confirmed in late 2024

In a November 19, 2024 report, T3 said Spotify CEO Daniel Ek had confirmed plans for a “Super Premium” subscription. The proposal was described as a higher-priced offering intended to provide substantially better audio quality, and it was widely viewed as the successor to the Spotify HiFi service first discussed in 2021.

However, the important details were still unresolved. Spotify had not confirmed:

  • when Super Premium would launch;
  • how much it would cost;
  • which countries would receive it;
  • what bitrate or audio format it would use; or
  • whether lossless audio would be exclusive to the new tier.

Contemporaneous reporting also noted that licensing complications had contributed to delays around the earlier HiFi plan. So although Spotify had confirmed the concept, it had not confirmed a finished product that consumers could buy.

Important: Do not treat the 2024 reports as proof that Spotify launched a separate Super Premium plan. They documented a plan and strategy, not a finalized subscription with published pricing and specifications.

What actually launched in 2025

On September 10, 2025, Spotify announced that Lossless audio was beginning to roll out to Premium listeners in select markets. Spotify called it the company’s highest music audio quality and specified playback of up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC.

The rollout initially included markets such as Australia, Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Spotify said the feature would expand to more than 50 markets through October. On October 8, 2025, the company said Lossless had rolled out to Premium users in all eligible markets.

“Eligible” is the key qualification. Spotify’s own later corporate filing describes Lossless as a feature of the Premium Service in select markets, rather than as a universally available feature in every country. A Premium subscriber who cannot find the setting may therefore be outside the supported rollout, using an unsupported device or app version, or waiting for account-level availability.

What 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC means

Lossless audio preserves the encoded music data instead of discarding information to reduce file size. Spotify delivers this feature using FLAC, an open lossless audio format.

The stated maximum is:

Specification Spotify Lossless maximum What it indicates
Bit depth 24-bit The resolution used to represent amplitude levels
Sample rate 44.1 kHz 44,100 samples per second; the standard rate associated with CD audio
Format FLAC Lossless compression rather than ordinary lossy streaming

This is high-quality lossless audio, but it is not the highest specification offered by every competing music service. Spotify’s ceiling is 24-bit/44.1 kHz—not 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz.

Higher numbers also do not automatically mean a better listening experience. The quality of the original master, the headphones or speakers, the room, the recording, and the listener’s hearing all matter. Lossless removes one form of data reduction; it does not transform a poor recording into a great one.

How to turn on Spotify Lossless

Spotify’s exact labels can vary by operating system, app version, market, and account. The general route is:

  1. Open Spotify and tap your profile picture or account menu.
  2. Open Settings and privacy.
  3. Find the Audio quality or Media quality section.
  4. Look for the Lossless quality option.
  5. Choose the highest available quality separately for Wi-Fi streaming, cellular streaming, and downloads.

Spotify may notify Premium subscribers inside the app when the capability becomes available. If Lossless does not appear, check that Spotify is updated, confirm that the account is a qualifying Premium account, and test again on a supported device or network. Do not assume that changing the setting proves that the stream is lossless in every playback situation: the connection and output device still matter.

Expect greater data use

Lossless files are larger than compressed streams. Selecting the setting for cellular playback can consume substantially more mobile data, while lossless downloads require more device storage. A sensible setup is to use Lossless for Wi-Fi and downloads, then choose a lower quality for cellular streaming if your data allowance is limited.

Downloaded tracks also need to be downloaded again after changing quality if you want the stored copies to use the new setting. Exact storage use varies with track length, catalogue encoding, and the application’s handling of downloads.

Will Bluetooth deliver Spotify Lossless?

Not necessarily in an end-to-end lossless form.

Spotify may retrieve a lossless FLAC source, but a Bluetooth connection can introduce a separate compression stage before the music reaches wireless headphones or speakers. The result depends on the phone or computer, the Bluetooth transmitter, the receiver, the codec selected, and the device software. “Lossless” in the Spotify setting therefore does not guarantee that the final wireless signal remains lossless.

For the most direct path, use:

  • wired headphones or earphones;
  • a wired connection to an amplifier or powered speakers; or
  • a USB audio device or DAC that supports the relevant connection and signal path.

That is a hardware-enablement recommendation, not a promise that every listener will hear a dramatic improvement. Many people may struggle to distinguish lossless from a good lossy stream in ordinary conditions, especially over small speakers, in noisy environments, or when the rest of the playback chain is limiting the result.

What equipment do you need?

Wired headphones

Wired headphones are the simplest way to avoid Bluetooth’s additional wireless transmission stage. A 3.5 mm headphone connection can work well when the phone, tablet, computer, or audio system provides a suitable analog output.

If you are assembling a wired setup, wired headphones for Spotify Lossless are an optional upgrade—not a mandatory Spotify purchase. Choose based on comfort, fit, durability, impedance, and the quality of the recording and source device, rather than assuming that an expensive model automatically makes Lossless audible.

USB-C or Lightning adapter

Many current phones do not include a 3.5 mm headphone socket. In that case, you may need an adapter that contains a digital-to-analog converter, commonly called a DAC. The adapter converts the digital audio from the phone into an analog signal for conventional wired headphones.

Compatibility check: Verify the connector—USB-C or Lightning—your device’s operating-system support, whether the adapter includes a DAC, and whether its output is adequate for your headphones. A passive adapter is not interchangeable with an active USB audio adapter on every device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For phones and tablets without a suitable headphone output, a USB-C headphone adapter with DAC can provide a practical wired route. Not every listener needs an external DAC, and the adapter does not increase Spotify’s 24-bit/44.1 kHz ceiling; it simply provides a compatible output path.

External DAC or headphone amplifier

A USB DAC or headphone amplifier can be useful when a computer or mobile device lacks an appropriate analog output, when its built-in output is noisy or underpowered, or when you already own demanding headphones. It is not automatically an audible upgrade over a competent built-in headphone output.

The full chain must support the intended result: Spotify’s source, the app and device, the digital connection, the DAC, the amplifier, and the headphones or speakers. Replacing one component cannot compensate for limitations elsewhere.

A practical setup checklist

  1. Confirm account availability: Make sure Lossless appears in Spotify’s audio-quality settings and remember that availability is market-dependent.
  2. Update the app: Use a current Spotify application on a supported device.
  3. Set each connection type: Configure Wi-Fi, cellular, and download quality independently.
  4. Manage data and storage: Use Wi-Fi for large downloads and consider a lower cellular setting.
  5. Choose the output path: Use wired headphones or an appropriate USB audio device if preserving the source signal is the priority.
  6. Check the weakest link: Bluetooth, an incompatible adapter, a low-quality recording, or limited headphones can determine what you ultimately hear.
  7. Judge with familiar recordings: Compare tracks you know well at a sensible volume. Do not rely on the label alone to predict an audible difference.

What Spotify’s 2026 strategy says about Super Premium

Spotify’s May 21, 2026 Investor Day materials indicate that some Premium users are willing to pay more and that the company is exploring paid add-ons aimed at capturing that demand. The presentation identifies audiobooks as an area that reached the add-on stage first and describes music as an important future opportunity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That strategy is consistent with the original Super Premium idea, but it is not confirmation that a product currently called Super Premium exists. The available materials do not say that Lossless is being held back for a separate tier, nor do they provide a confirmed price or launch date for such a plan.

Spotify’s 2026 announcements also include a paid add-on involving generative covers and remixes, as well as Reserved by Spotify, a benefit for selected Premium fans in the United States. Reserved by Spotify launched on June 18, 2026, in partnership with Live Nation and powered by Ticketmaster, offering eligible fans access to held tickets before general sale.

Reserved by Spotify is evidence of Spotify pursuing more benefits for highly engaged subscribers. It is not an audio-quality feature and should not be confused with the delayed HiFi or Super Premium concept.

So, is Spotify Super Premium available?

There is no confirmed basis in the available official materials for saying that a separate, generally available Spotify Super Premium lossless plan has launched.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What can be stated confidently is narrower:

  • Spotify confirmed the Super Premium concept in 2024.
  • Spotify later launched Lossless inside Premium in eligible markets.
  • Lossless supports up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC.
  • Spotify is exploring paid add-ons and other high-value Premium benefits.
  • A separate Super Premium name, price, availability map, and exclusive lossless policy remain unconfirmed by the cited 2026 materials.

Regional tests or future product changes could alter that picture. Anyone considering a subscription should check the current Spotify Premium page and in-app settings for their own country rather than relying on the old HiFi or Super Premium reports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Spotify launch a separate Super Premium plan for lossless audio?

Not according to the available official materials. Spotify confirmed the Super Premium concept in 2024, but Lossless launched as a feature of Premium in eligible markets. Spotify’s 2026 materials discuss paid add-ons without confirming a separately named Super Premium tier.

What is the highest Spotify Lossless quality?

Spotify specifies up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. That is lossless audio at CD-rate sampling with 24-bit depth, but it is not the same as 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz streaming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Bluetooth headphones play Spotify Lossless?

They may receive audio sourced from Spotify’s Lossless setting, but Bluetooth can add another compression stage. For the best chance of preserving the source signal, use wired headphones or a compatible USB DAC and wired playback chain.

Why can’t I find the Lossless setting in Spotify?

Availability depends on your country, Premium eligibility, device, app version, and rollout status. Update Spotify, check Settings and privacy > Audio quality or Media quality, and remember that Spotify does not describe Lossless as available in every country.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Spotify’s Super Premium promise was real, but the product that ultimately arrived was Lossless for eligible Premium subscribers. It offers up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC, while a separate Super Premium lossless tier remains unconfirmed in the available 2026 materials.
